Description
Dedicated to my Dad who died last month just shy of 90 years. He lived a long and good life. I will miss him...

I wanted to mark this moment with a song... but right now it's too soon for something new from scratch. So here is my offering of something new from something old. The lyrics of this well-known gospel tune say it well enough.

A couple years ago at my daughter's house I recorded the vocal and guitar of this song via my iPod Touch to test out its mic. I uploaded that recording HERE.

Now for the new version: This entire song was done on the cheap except for Roxylee's vocal harmonies. The guitar is an inexpensive $79 Rogue acoustic. As I mentioned my vox and guitar was recorded on the Touch. Recently, I decided to experiment with the iPad GarageBand software instruments. So the bass and organ are played and recorded from that app. Simple and not to shabby for a $5 app. I sent what I came up with to Roxylee. She, agreeing to add harmonies, did a number of takes. I found it really hard to decide which was best. And, it was mainly due to her desire to "get it right" that we finally came up with what we think is the best version. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but we hope you like it. Thanks for listening.

Lyrics
I am weak but Thou art strong
Jesus keep me from all wrong
I'll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee

CHORUS:
Just a closer walk with Thee
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea
Daily walking close to Thee
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be

When my feeble life is o'er
Time for me shall be no more
Guide me gently, safely o'er
To Thy kingdom's shore, to Thy shore

When life's sun sinks in the west
Lord, may I have done my best
May I find sweet peace and rest
In that happy home of the blessed

Touching tribute, Jack. A very appropriate song, finely presented. Great idea to get Roxylee along for the journey. Sound out of the iPad is not too shabby, either. Well done to you both. Kind regards, Peter.

Everything that counts is the feeling of a song, not the equipment. This is very moving, especially the last vers:

"When life's sun sinks in the west
Lord, may I have done my best
May I find sweet peace and rest
In that happy home of the blessed"

I agree, absolutely.

Beautiful
Hard for me to imagine what it means to loose a father but I can imagine, besides a very special kind and depth of grief, it be something that puts much of life in a different perspective.

A touching and very beautiful tribute!
Be well brother
God Bless

Comfort
for the weary traveler. I like your arrangement of this song, Jack. It is not only a plea, but an upbeat song of assurance. Thank you or asking me to sing on it, on my cheap mic.

Very nice tribute to a father who had a very long life. Your two voices work real good together. And done with an iPad and a cheap guitar ... doesn't matter what you play as long as your heart is in it and you have feel which this does. Enjoyed...
Cheers

My dad's a musician and just a few years younger than your dad. He's a musician and it was watching him strum songs very much like this one that first inspired me to play guitar. He gigged with a trio for all the years I was growing up. His group consisted of him on guitar, a bassist, and a guy on organ. So this really brought back the sounds I would hear when I would tag along to his rehearsals or the occasional gig. A beautiful tribute sir! You're in my thoughts and prayers!

All my best
to you, Jack. 90 years is venerable by anyone's standards, but I'd happily give my eye teeth to have one more hour with my parents....

Your song is very fine, and sits nicely in a certain 'acoustic church music' aesthetic. It's simply played and simply sung; but I also hear shades of Leon Redbone, Joan Baez and deep South evangelism lurking in there (a rich mix, that!), and the song is all the richer for it. Roxy's "my plea" at 2:42 gave me goosebumps.
A lovely, gentle contribution.

Shared faith
Jack, you and Roxie share a belief in the comfort that Christian religion can bring .. so it is appropriate the two of you teamed up for this tribute. Nice job of it. I've said this before: one of the outstanding attributes of your music-making is the ability to present a straight-forward articulation of sentiment when dealing with life issues .. and one of those acute human emotional moments is dealing with the aftermath of losing an elderly parent.
