Description
This song developed out of a three-person multiple-thread e-mail exchange that began as commentary on a series of mail art post cards titled "The Askew Series" (Askew being the recipient's name). Hence my title. However, it could just as well be called "Pictures in an Exhibition," as the verses are an attempt to verbally tell about visual imagery in a stripped-down punk style.

There are parts of it I am not satisfied with. I tore apart and rebuilt the ending three times and it still doesn't capture the refined chaos I was going for. Still, I don't want to over-tinker with it and have it lose its edginess … so I guess this is it for now.

ASKEWED [Buckley, Smith, Penn]

Agnew Askew
wants a picture with you
to oil his democrat munching machine
the photo is free
in exchange for your vote

Philip the Final
redolent in red vinyl
is radiating to that steampunk beat
he's letting rote musicality
drum into his master muscle memory

Rodchenko Askew
is tossing the dice
in an effort to make an artistic affirmation
His goal is to prove uncertainty certain

Liberace Askew
flashing diamonds and jewels
is staging a magnificent performance
you get what you pay for -
so prepare to pay more

Works for me.

You're too kind.

There are already two lines I'd like to tweak (which often happens right after one hits the "post" or "send" button). But just like the music, at some point you have to say "That's it" and move on : )

Askewed
Buzz-saw madness with a crowbar of political rant thrown in for good measure. Minimal and unencumbered.

Askew addition
Ha-ha .. throwing in a crowbar is probably more effective than the usual wrench.

Your comment practically reads like another verse!

I love this! The guitar tones are brilliant! Cool lyrics well delivered. Love the effects on the vocals. A lot of chromatic madness and fun in this one!

It seemed to call out for chromatic madness to offset the repetitive structure as defined by the rhythm guitar line. Only I didn't think to call it that .. until now : )

Hang on!
What a great job of imagery you've imbued this with, with those delightful cascading chromatic chords and just a general sense of things being topsy-turvy. It all fits with the words in this piece and Warren, I think you've created a true gem here--excellent!! One case where I can positively claim, "This is skewed up real good!" I love it and thanks for sharing it! Michael

Less is more than enough
I had written a couple more verses .. but four seemed enough for this piece. There's only so much skewering the ears can take in one setting : )

Site savvy
That's one of the reasons I keep coming back hear to rummage through the catalog .. because surprisingly fresh and unusually different music gets posted hear .. and it's the kind of stuff you can't hear anywhere else. Which means it's time I paid your page a visit!

Making a statement
Thanks for listening, Vic. The power chords were crying out for leads with an attitude .. which is how I think of making a punk statement.

Great intro!
Totally sold me. And the follow up is grand stuff. One of your best Mr. Warren. Really enjoyable. So much to listen to and take in. Kudos walking man.

Song clutter
I had originally laid some lead lines over the opening power chords, but later stripped them away to let the opening retain its raw power .. thinking it hopefully better sucks a listener into the song. I often run the danger of over-cluttering up a piece (which is perhaps a life metaphor?). Thanks for coming by.

The filtered sing-songy vocals and doubled descending guitar line go perfectly with the quirky lyrics. Well done!

Very fine rye lyrics with
Adrian Belew feel guitar. Has a real circus atmosphere. Wish the drums were up a bit in the mix. Big thumbs up!

Nifty number - lyrically in the list song tradition. Very nice guitar riff.

Nice to hear from you. I didn't think of it as a list so much as a serial approach depicting vignettes, where I first described a scene and then made an assessment. The scan was a bit odd with a rhyming couplet to open and a kicker line, which made it feel like I was writing non-structured haiku.
However, I supposed there's no reason that one man's series couldn't be another man's list.

But even that doesn't quite capture the wacky fun that's happening in this tune. Wild guitar work - I can't even conceive how you got some of those sounds out of a guitar. It all hangs together well so your tinkering level seems right to me. Good one!

Tinkering
I certainly had a fun time recording this piece of music - so I'm glad that aspect got communicated : )

I don't pre-conceive the sounds of my guitar work. I just kind of jump in somewhere and go from there. Lately, I've been working with the Garageband guitar pre-sets (which means either using them as-is or tweaking them a bit). Then it's playing around with different combinations of those guitars until something sounds right for the moment.

Yes - those rising and falling guitar runs seem to be something making a regular appearance in my songs lately. It feels like a natural insertion - so I just go with it. Thanks for leaving a comment, Tim.
