Along The Open Road (2)

Description
An experiment, in moving away from the straight punk-derived song structure I write in. I've played around with tempo and feel, aiming for a song that builds up speed and emotion.
I've tried hard to move out of my comfort zone here, eschewing power chords with distortion for gentle guitars, picked chords and using keyboard sounds. I've also delved into the MIDI in Toontrack EZDrummer and played around with the stock patterns, chopping and changing them to suit my purposes.
Finally I've played with the vocal arrangements, trying to get them to lead the song rather than swathes of guitars.
I hope you guys and girls enjoy it.
Lyrically it's my typical obscure personal references.

Paddy

(Remixed version as I spotted something I didn't like in yesterday's upload - when are MJs gonna allow us revisions??)

Man I think this tune really starts at 1:10. I'd ditch the intro. It's atmospheric and might be a really cool way to introduce the song live but on a recording i just found myself wanting to fast forward through it. The song is terrific dude. I love the high backups in the chorus and the slight dischord under the rhythm guitar part. Also really like the change toward the end with the keys. I'd mix the lead guitar down a bit in the first verse - it buries the vocals a little. But I really like what you're trying to do, especially with the keys. I'm curious to see where this takes you. How about some horns??

I got to agree with Craig on the intro,,,but once it got going I cranked it up a bit.Bass line might could use a few less notes in spots.Over all a great song and much enjoyed right here. Thanks for sharing.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
