The Saddest Little Song in the World

Description
So this is song 5 in my six song cycle about growing up. It follows 'Hi-Tops'. We've graduated high school, we're living on our own. Well, not really. Because we're living with our high school girlfriend, which in retrospect is jumping out of the plane strapped to the instructor, but at the time it seems cool and grown up. We spend a lot of time at local bars, we're the life of the party. Everyone wants to be us. Except us. We want to be everyone else. We need each other for all the wrong reasons, and each of us has different wrong reasons. We think that we're conflicted because adult life is difficult but life is difficult because we're just kids playing at adult. We've brought pop guns and water balloons to the Marne. And then a mortar hits. And the blood and pain is real.

This is a tough subject, and it's taken me 25 years to write a good honest song about it. I'm one of those people that took a long, long time to grow up. I don't think I was worth much of anything as an adult until maybe 34 or so. It took my daughter being born and the infinite patience of a good woman to work me into a responsible, self aware, thinking human being. This is one episode in a life of fucking up. Not in huge ways. I wish I'd have fucked up in huge ways, because I might have been forced to come to terms with myself earlier in life. I was a small time fuckup lol.

Everyone has an opinion about stuff like this, but the truth of it is that everyone's opinion doesn't mean shit until they are in the situation. I would do the same thing again and again as an 18 year old. I wouldn't do it now. Right, wrong, or indifferent, it's just sad. So this is a sad song. Sorry. It's still got a bit of tempie whimsey though, and a little silliness no doubt somewhere.

Musically, I wanted the feeling that I have when I think about it. Which isn't often, just once in a while when I'm in a reflective mood and something reminds me of it. I'm never down when I think about it, just reflective. Calm. I don't believe in regret. I believe in the moment. Do what you think is right, right now. Everything else is just a distraction. So I wanted the tune to be musically now, really immediate. But of course underlying the breathing, now part is memory, and memory is dramatic but also flat and dead, and that's there too.

Lyrics
they were 18
and they didn't want it
well, he didn't have an opinion
but she sure did
no way she said
it's not you having it
and i'm not having it
so we took care of it

8:30 in the morning
some old steel town strip mall
protestors drinking coffee
he waited in the car
i don't remember what he was thinking
i guess he wasn't thinking anything
who could think about anything
waiting on something like that

she got in the car
looking scared and hurt
she asked him to put out his cigarette
because it was making her sick

they drove home to her house
her parent's were at work
she asked him for some saltines and 7-up
and then she went to bed

Some
good deep thinking in your reconnoitering of the past above, but don't worry we all 'grow up' at different rates; as long as we get there in the end it doesn't matter. I like the ponderous style you adopted here and it suits the subject really well.... enjoyed, regards M

I'm always happy to see you drop by a song. I'm glad you think it worked. I was trying to be straightforward, and hoping that people would just take it for what it is. Thanks!

You have a great concept record happening in this series! Love the sparseness in this. Wow, those lyrics are powerful!

concepts
yeah man thanks, i think it's working. i didn't set out to do a concept thing but then songs started stringing together and before you know it i was writing a rock opera lol. really glad you like the lyrics. i wanted the listener to feel like they'd been through it after listening to the song.

Thanks for sharing the backstory, Craig. This is a very fine song. Poignant, introspective and, hopefully, cathartic, the arrangement is just perfect. A stripped back sense of time and place that allows the lyrics and vocals to take absolute centre stage. Much kudos. Kind regards, Peter.

I like the atmosphere, the way how you sing it and how the different sounds come in, very well done. I'm not sure, if I understand, what this song is about...abortion?

the 'a' word
yeah that's what it's about. i don't mention 'abortion' because it's such a loaded word, i don't think anyone can be honest thinking about it in terms of politics or morality or anything other than the fact of it, if that makes any sense. so i tried to just stick with the facts, not the names. always happy when someone that i respect as a songwriter likes a song of mine. thanks!

*this* is it. I'm still not completely sold on the flute, but after your description I think I understand it more. Which makes me think I'm still a little behind on the growing up timeline. The vocal delivery is absolutely perfect, though. The delivery feels like those moments where you have no idea what to say. You can say something, but you're at least smart enough to know nothing you say is "right" and it's best not to say a thing. Which matches the lyrics because the guy doesn't have one word of dialog. He's not even thinking, but you can tell he is. It's just too big and heavy to process. Sonically I'm intrigued with the string/mandolin mix. They sound great together. Arpeggiated, delayed guitar is tops, too. DL when I get home.

sonically
Hey man thanks for noticing the mandolin / strings thing. I liked that a lot but it's kind of subtle. And 'Arpeggiated' is my new word of the week.

I tried to replace the flute but couldn't find anything that worked as well. So I EQ'd it and added some reverb and tried to make it Eric worthy. Once again I fail to live up to your high expectations. This isn't doing anything for my dad issues.

life in bars
great song craig. does tell a story that's familiar all right.

earlier today i read a news article about another drinking establishment that i use to hang out that was being torn down. made me realize that all the drinking hangouts except one have been torn down...... they're erasing my past so it seems

erasing the past
i miss those little small town bars. i think they're probably going south along with the blue collar industry that supplied the customers. or turning into micro breweries.

Pretty real lyrics ... I think this is excellent. I really like your subtle approach to the music ... the rain ...everyone's opinion doesn't mean shit until they are in the situation ... so true... you have created an excellent reflective group of songs but this one really touched me in the way it's written and performed. This is really good.

Thanks, man. I think this is the first time I've used a background sound. They generally sound gimmicky but the rain really worked with the pace of the song. Really appreciate the nice comment.

Isn't that the truth man. I feel like I've lived the lives of at least 3 people and I'm only 42. Can't imagine how I'll feel at 90 if I'm lucky enough to get that far.

sad song
great song, that i'm sure a lot of folks can relate to.
always cool when a song or some other artistic-type endeavour can capture a complicated mess of feelings, esp. regarding a subject that is avoided in everyday conversation but so many have lived with in some way or other. double applause.

man on a good day life is a complicated mess. funny how a description of the mundane can sometimes cut through the BS to get to the heart of things. i love when that happens. thanks for the good listen, i always look forward to your opinion...glad you liked this

I like the punchy bass and subtle guitar work. The lyric shines the light on a painful situation which I'm sure many of us have had to deal with. I hope writing this was a least a little cathartic for you.
