Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
As far I know, written by Jimmy Cox in 1923 and now in the public domain. One of those old songs I like to sing every now and then so I thought I'd have a go at recording it. There are two Maton acoustic steel string guitar tracks (one played in G and one played in D with a capo to get them to Bb), a bass and a bit of noodling plus solo from the Gibson Howard Roberts.

Hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed singing it!

I really am enjoying this blues piece tonight.
Your Guitar work is exceptional and it is so mixed so well with so much clarity.

Thanks for listening and for the comment on the mix - I tried to keep it fairly simple so that the parts were distinctive, so I'm glad it sounds OK to your ears!

Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out
I was impressed right away by the quality of the recording. Clean and clear! Well balanced! Very pro sounding! Your acoustic tone is warm and natural. Great picking. Excellent vocal. Your approach to singing suits this song and lyrics perfectly. Love the jazz tone of the Howard Roberts.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for all that, Andrew - your comments are much appreciated. It is a song that can be done in lots of ways: I was listening to a version by young jazz singer Morgan James recently that impressed me - it is very different from anything I could do. And I must admit I still enjoy hearing the tone of the HR!

Nobody Knows
As Garni said, exceptional guitar work...and everything sounds so easy, relaxed. Your vocals as well, relaxed and warm. A Gibson Howard Roberts? Don't know it, I have to google. Sounds great and fits perfect to the acoustic tracks. Excellent work.

Thanks
Re the Howard Roberts, it is a single pickup guitar that came out in the 70s. I bought mine new somewhere around 1974 - my guitar teacher convinced me it was a good idea. I used to use it playing folk/jazz in a coffee lounge. You can see one here http://www.gbase.com/gear/byid?item=2052794#

Thanks for the comments on the performance - much appreciated!

Blues Standard
This still flies like it was written this morning. Your vocal is perfect, low and just a touch gravely. Blues all the way. Thanks

Thanks
The low vocal was a bit of a compromise - I tried it in a higher key but thought it lost the "down and out" feel so kept it in the lower one. Thanks for listening and for the comment - much appreciated!

Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out
Nice one, Philip. I always enjoy singing this one, too. I like your phrasing and relaxed vocal. You have also given the song just a touch of jazz swing that makes it stand out as uniquely you. The HR sounds great as always. Good one. Regards, Peter.

Good morning
How was the fishing? Catch a few? This song does keep coming in an out of my mind - Clapton's version on his Unplugged CD is one example. I tried the other guitars for the solo, too, but the HR just kept saying "I sound the nicest!" Thanks for the comments - see you soon!

I love the colour, too! Mine still has the original pickup (unlike the one in the photo) but I did have the floating bridge pinned to make sure it stayed in the same place.

Guitar work...
exceptional / notable...What a great thing it is to have such a great song resurrected with such care as you have done so here. You sing with quiet certainty and the guitars are quite perfectly in sync, and that's not hard to do when overdubbing. A most-pleasant listen.

Beautifully done Philip!
I agree with everything that's been said before about your playing, singing (channeling Eric Clapton?), and production except, just to be contrary, it sounds too warm, too lovely to be the singing/playing of a guy who has lost his last friend and really is down and out, cold and miserable. My ha'pennys worth ;-)
I do like it though: I took a copy, thanks.

Nobody knows
Cox would love this treatment I'm sure Philip. Well played for sure, but your voice and how you decided to sing it so matter of factly makes it perfectly authentic. It is a joy to listen to, and I think I'll make this the last one tonight and go to bed on a high note (as it were).

It's a hit, a download, a second listen, and many thanks for letting us share it.

Cheers from Canada,
Doug

And so TRUE....That's one of those songs, that hit a nerve just as the

over again......

Sat between my IMF super compacts
as indeed I am...it was like sitting in a room full of guitarists and singists ....the placement of the instruments and vocals are just spot on and crystal clear in their quality......this song crops up occasionally during my life....I collaborated on a version by Sylvia D (formerly the artist known as Lilmom) then just last month saw Grandpa Banana at a small venue.....well I say saw ....in fact you could not see him because he was so small and thre was no stage....but anyhoo ...he did this song .....and I have to say ,honestly...that with all other versions ...including Clappo's ...this is my favourite....you captured the desperation and disillusionment of the lyrics that I often feel are overlooked in other versions. the guy is not moani9ng that he has fallen on hard times....he is hurt and bewildered that his "buddies" have all pissed off !!....You nail it ....download ....

cheers

Jarvo.
