Description
Alaska / Canada Trip Song No. 6 (the last...)

I'm not big (at all) on Yuletide songs so a blues seemed to be in order...

In fact, one has been in my mind since I saw the first glacier on our recent trip, just outside Juneau, in Alaska.
The fantastic blue colour immediately had me thinking "blues".

The fact that ALL the glaciers we saw have been receding ever more rapidly over the last 50 years made me understand why they are blue.

The guitars, vocals and organ are my endeavours; the bass, drums and horns I tweaked out of Magic GB.

See what you think.

P.S. This will be my last song for quite a few weeks, too, as we are again off traveling quite soon to the UK and France.

I might come back with a Charles Aznavour type number :-)

Have a happy and safe holiday season.

Regards,

Peter :-)

Lyrics
The Ice Is Blue - Peter Bowen (December 2012)

Intro lead

You know the [A𝑏m7] ice is blue, it’s [D𝑏m] melting all a[A𝑏m7] way
You know the [D𝑏m] ice is blue, baby, it’s receding every [A𝑏m7] day
[E9] Pity most don’t wanna know, [E𝑏7#9] some day soon we’ll have to [A𝑏m7] pay [E𝑏7#9]

Seems that all around the world, the weather’s shooting a crap game
You know that all around the world babe, climate change is taking aim
The planet’s getting hotter, and no one wants to take the blame

Lead

That’s why the ice is blue, it’s just melting all away
The ice is blue, blue, baby, it’s receding everyday
Pity most don’t wanna know, some day soon we’re all going to pay

No ambiguity
Thanks, Ricky. Hopefully I got a bit of feeling coming across. Touchy subject for some folks. You can tell where I stand on the issue. You have a great holiday break as well. Take care, Peter.

Blue blues
Love that crunchy guitar - very nice indeed! It's sort of frightening what's happening to the world - luckily we have Andrew Bolt to explain that we don't have to worry! Nice blend of long and short notes in the solo - gives it a good bluesy feel. I look forward to the French number - should be entertaining! Good song - would be fun to play live, too, I imagine!
PeterB7858 said 1597 days ago (December 11th, 2012)
Good excuse
The maps and on-site markers of how far the glaciers we saw had receded in the last few decades makes for sober reading. Good excuse for a blues number! Glad it came across OK. It was fun to play. Thank heavens for little girls... oh la la... and garlic croissants. Can't wait. Talk soon. Thanks, Peter.

Perfect title. Nice take on the blues. Nasty guitar. Yeah. Scary subject, though. Your singing sounds great on this. Off to find new inspirations, then? Alaska worked some magic on you. Very tasty stuff.

Thanks, Les. The title was a no brainer. And, yes, Alaska and the Canadian Rockies did give me plenty of inspiration. Might be a bit harder to write about Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, though. Herman's Hermits here we come :-) Regards, Peter.

blue ice
glaciers are dangerous to shipping and everyone should grab a hairdryer and do their bit for lloyds.
doooooood......this is cool. the sound bed.....especially the brass is fantastic. i still think you should have got drunk and angry.....before recording the vocal. let me know when you are arriving in the Uk....come visit.

Multi coloured ice
I'm guessing blue ice is still preferable to yellow ice... You always want me to be drunk and angry before I sing. What kind of role model are you? :-) Yep, let's catch up. It will be a blast. Talk soon. Regards, Peter.

Wow Peter ... the horns, the organ and that gritty lead tone .... yeah. I am a sucker for horns ... real nice vocals ... you really feel the blues Peter. Lots of people can play the blues but not feel... Well done arrangement and a thumbs up on your horns and organ additions.
Cheers

A whiter shade of blue :-)
Thanks, Stan. Your comments are very kind. My middle age, well-off self hasn't really had too many times when I could truly invoke the blues, but it is a great musical form and it does sneak under your skin, especially, for me, slow blues numbers. Take care, my friend, Peter.

Cool, Peter...
literally (or, as TvRicky says, Cold, my man ;-)
Everything about this is very good from the sentiment through the production, so naturally, I took a copy. Thanks.

Thanks, Freddy. I take some Fonzy thumbs up, any day. Horns add so much to slow blues. There are some nice bits and pieces to get out of Magic GB. Have a great holiday break with your family. Take care, Peter.

Inspiration
Thanks, Andrew. Yeah, I did start working on this as an acoustic blues, but the urge to dirty the sound up a bit was too strong. Glad you liked the rhythm work. I took inspiration from your recent post in that regard. Have a great holiday break. Talk in 2013. Take care, Peter.

Thanks, Michael. Slow blues with brass is hot, I agree. Glad it turned out OK. Hope the move goes well. We will catch up again in the new year sometime. You are Alabama bound and I am London and Paris bound. Just don't catch the Birmingham Blues...a la Charlie Daniels. Take care, Peter

Tweaked GB presets
Thanks, Albert. Glad you thought my "down under" take on the blues was OK. I used a G&L ASAT (telecaster) on the recording. The lead track was a Garageband preset, "West End Wah", that I tweaked a bit. The left channel rhythm was GB "Sixties Basic Blues" and the right rhythm was GB "Smooth Soul", both of which I tweaked a bit. Thanks for stopping by. I have been travelling since just after Christmas and will catch up on more of your posts in the coming week. Thanks for dropping by. Regards, Peter

Lucky devil...
...all that traveling has got to be not only fun, but also adding to the storehouse of memories from which you can draw musical ideas in the future. Lucky us! The minor-ish harmonic choices here lend themselves well to the sad condition of the environment. Love the bridge guitar work! Isn't Eb7#9 kinda hard to play? as are all these chords. Well, I'm impressed on all levels. Already looking forward to what you do to the UK and France. (And C.Aznavour is a name I haven't heard in ages. Great singer. Good inspiration, too.)
