Description
Here's a present for Christmas if you want it. I love carols! I've mashed up a PD midi file and come up with this arrangement of an old Christmas classic. I like to think of it as electro-orchestral, because I've used some orchestral samples and electronic settings on the synths. There are eleven tracks in total, four Omnisphere, three Zebra 2, one EXS24, one Dimension and one is a free offering from the KRV challenge, the "Orchestral Strings" synth. [You can't really do much with it, but I think it sounds nice!]

I did run the final mix through some mastering settings, but decided it didn't need them, so this is the unmastered version. I'm never sure of course, so feedback is welcomed.

Anyway a traditional tune done in a different way. The original was written in 1857 by a guy called John Henry Hopkins, who wrote both the music and the lyrics. Don't worry though. I missed out the lyrics in this version. No way can I sing!

Thanks for dropping by and Happy Christmas!

This got me into the spirit ... great sounds and the sub bass is nice. The strings are lovely ... unmastered mix is good ... very nicely put together.

Is it that time of year again already?
I'm not an enormous fan of carols but I like your re-working of this.
When the french horn comes in it sort of gives it a sad melancholic feeling.
Very well put together and a good choice of sounds and strings
cheers

There are several carols that I really like, and this is definitely one of them. Really challenging arrangement. I think I like the delicate music box & picked strings parts the best. But that sub bass rules. I wish I could do carols, but I have never succeeded in doing one that is worthwhile. This is great. Do a few more and you've got an album quality compilation that would go well with snow and a yuletide fire.

I was
just about to write that you'd gone all orchestral -synth when I read the above.... this is really exquisite Dave.... beautiful touches here and a wonderful mix of sounds that still comes over as 'traditional' and we all like a bit of tradition at this time, regards M

You really have mashed this up!
I have, as you know, mashed up a couple of PD midi files myself and NONE of the ones I've auditioned have sounded ANYTHING like this. Great job! Besides being a wonderful tune you have given it all sorts of new life and interest.
Have a wonderful Christmas Dave, and congrats on giving up the fags.

Brilliant...
When one can take a song so utterly familiar and weave it into something startlingly new and refreshing--hey, this is a rouser Mr. Jones--exceptional work and greatly enjoyed this morning. Thanks for sharing it and Merrie Christmas to ye and yours! Michael

King of the synths
Terrific arrangement Dave - a fine variety of synth sounds that go well together to both take their respective voices and work as a group. Your handling of the various melodic lines is most interesting and tastefully done. Overall I'd say quite an inspired effort.

I tried those strings from the KVR challenge and didn't think they sounded as good as yours do here. Clearly I need to have a second listen.

Cheers and Happy Christmas!
Doug

Very nice...
I especially liked the "trombone" sounds in the opening counterpoint against those little bells...and that triple rhythm thing you have going around 1:10 is inspired as a variant of the original meter. Small suggestion: at around 2:35 raise the pitch and put yourself into a bit of a new mode. ... Very nice writing, Dave. You really thought this out carefully and the results are to have created a unique setting of this traditional tune. Bravo.

dances like snowflakes
I am working on a solo piano Christmas album. It is great to play (or listen, in this case!) to CHristmas music off season. I think the essence of the music comes across better. I like you delicate version, its variations. It dances like snowflakes...
