Description
So you want doom and disaster? Well, here is The Summer before the Dark...

My suite of simple, often loop based summer songs was almost broken this year, since the little piece I eventually managed to put together didn't quite meet my creative expectations (to put it mildly). But then when this challenge was posted I thought I might take it for a spin and see if it could be used after all. And after adding some FX and some reverb and EQ-ing this was the result. Not the best ever but perhaps not worse than some of the early summer tunes in the collection - and I get to post another song before the dark!!

And yes, I know the book by Doris Lessing. I think we had it on the compulsory readings list when I studied English at the university maaaany years ago... All other similarities are completely coincidental ;-)

Anyway, if you don't enjoy I hope at least you can endure, it's just 2.13, in two main parts, so if you don't like the first you might try the second...

Happy doomsday and an even happier holiday season!!

Henke

Too
gentle to be a Doomsday song in the beginning but what a kick after you got me all chilled out. That was pretty sneaky. Very much like a sunny day lost in a sudden thunderstorm. Thank you.

Well
Doomsdays often are pretty sneaky, aren't they ;-)

In case I had a thought with this piece to begin with I believe the first part to represent the rather slow and uneventful summer we had this year, and then came the olympics and brought some rock'n roll to the summer. But I also had to have some rain in there because it has rained a lot all summer and all autumn/fall and now when it's winter there is snow to the knees...

But with that said, I believe your interpretation is at least as good as this one :-)

Thanks for listening and commenting, and best wishes for doomsday,
Henke

Not anywhere close to the creative genius of your doom-piece, but it's always nice to get something posted, and these challenges certainly helps sometimes.

Best wishes for doomsday,

Thank you, Harald
Not much of a listen compared to your stuff, and as for my book, you don't miss much... I am planning to try to make some proper specially written music for it though, so you might look out for the update in a few years time ;-)

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to listen. Much appreciated.

Best wishes for doomsday - oh, it's tomorrow!!!

Hehe
Isn't it amazing what a couple of loops can do. Really. But it sure would've been nice to be able to play that way yourself. Oh, I guess YOU can?!

Thanks for listening and commenting, and happy doomsday.

Old loops
Put to good effect! I prefer the second half actually and wish you'd had the time to extend it. The contrast between the two is excellent!

Henke said 1647 days ago (December 20th, 2012)
Old loops indeed
It's my little sub genre of summer pieces, simple loopy stuff which try to paint a musical picture of my summer. First nothing much happened at all, and then at least there was the Rock'n Roll Olympics to watch on TV :-) And then all the raining. I just couldn't drown the whole piece in it, would have been even more boring... Or at least I think it would be boring if I tried to extend it. It's not like I need to put it on repeat, like I have done on some of my tunes in the past... Anyway, glad you could find something to like in it :-)

Happy doomsday, and ever after!

I just thought about
"Summer before the dark" in the Scandinavian context. I'm enjoying this - to me, either part could be extended pretty successfully, but I do like the juxtaposition.

Yes
That IS one way of looking at the title. With the cloudy sky we've had here in Stockholm since the snow came, it's actually quite light outside, though. For example, I can walk (on a beaten track) through the woods between my work and the subway station (500 meters) without any extra light. (For extra safety I still use the Light app on my iPhone...) All because of the light pollution from the city.

Anyway, thank you for listening and commenting. Not sure an extension would be bearable myself, but who knows?

Cheers mate,
Henke

Hehe
Well it's the 21st for an hour still - in Sweden - which means something like 7 or 8 hours in Maya-land, I guess. But whatever, we can always hope :-)

And thank you, these challenges actually has helped me get going with music-making a couple of times. When you are totally free to do what you like the possibilities are so immense that it's almost impossible to settle for just one road ahead. Then it can be easier to get some tight restrictions and try to be creative in the vicinity of that "box".

Anyway, I liked your piece as well, but I fear I have been neglecting many other contributions. Busy times you know, preparing for what's coming...

Take care and stay well,
Henke

Summer Music - Yes!!
A light and airy feel to this with a hint of Latin and sunshine to help melt our snow away. I'm in a summer breeze in a sunny porch overlooking a forest. And then..... someone gets behind the wheel of a Ferrari along the twists and turns of La Grande Corniche and off we go. A little thundershower isn't going to stop our fun.

Well conceived and deftly assembled and mixed, but more THANK YOU for getting back into the composing game. I know too well that it only comes together when it comes together, but it's great that you had some inspiration and the urge to follow through and create. We've missed your tunes and this one reminds us why.

Keep well and God Jul,
Doug

Oh Doug
You really are too kind. I was so moved by your comment I couldn't reply in a day or two ;-)

I like the little story you hear in this. Isn't it amazing what a few loops can set in motion, that you can conjure these summer pictures up there in the Canadian winter?!

About future music making I am actually hoping to make some new original "soundtracks" for my book in iBookstore. The ones already in it may work as they are, but I feel I might do a little better... Big thanks for helping my motivation. Now if only I had some time to sit and doodle around with my toys...

God Jul och Gott Nytt År!

Wow, thanks
If you are not already tired sick of the used loops I guess it is possible to like it, but it's hardly the kind of song you'll listen to over and over again. There are lots of good music out there, so no need either ;-)

Anyway, big thanks for listening and commenting, always much appreciated!

Hej!
Nice to finally hear a track from you. I really like the first half, nice mellow summery party kind of vibe. Pass the drinks! Wished it'd be longer but then it wouldn't be much of a doom to call home about I guess.

Hejsan!
Yeah, long time since, but at least now I feel like doing some proper music again, hopefully in the form of new "soundtrack" pieces for my book Den femte årstiden. If you have an iPad you should try it, it's in Swedish and totally free to download :-)

You are not alone in asking for some kind of extension, which I am pleased to hear, but really, there are only that many similar loops to keep the song consistent yet varied. You may chop them up a bit, use some filters, maybe transpose a few bars, but very soon it will be rather boring I'm afraid. At least in my hands... So I am just happy if I didn't make it too long as it is ;-)

God jul och Gott nytt (musik)år!

Surprise, it's doomsday!
Loud cheers as the world ends. It ain't exactly the same as a New Year's celebration, but some seem to think so. I like both parts equally well, and the transition from the first to the second was apt. Good that you were able to contribute this surprising gem to the doomfest.

A balearic apocalypse
Ah, yes, carefree summers. They always turn into careworn winters don't they? And an apocalypse right before christmas really puts a damper on the season.
