The Legend Of The Swift Arrow w/ Vic Holman, ShadowOfNine

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This song is based upon different interpretations of an ancient persian folk legend, the story of Arash the Archer.

This project has been sitting for 2+ years, I first approached Dave (ShadowOfNine) for help on narratives, who very kindly lent his skills for the project and it all came spot on !

For the rest, this was waiting for Vic to bring in his talent. I really love working with Vic (I think I mentioned this already, didn't I :-)). Vic delivered awesome work on all lead guitar parts and also took care of the vocals for the parts sung.

I would like to thank Vic and Dave for accepting to work on this project.

Also, my special thanks for Char, and Stephen (Saltaireguru77) for kindly providing support on different stages of this project.

IMPORTANT :

The song is 22 minutes' long. It was impossible to post it with decent quality on MJ. I posted on SoundCloud so please click the below line to reach the song page and play it there, as opposed to regular MJ player on this page. The MJ player contains only a small sample. The song can be downloaded on SoundCloud page.

Yes, it's quite a long piece. I recommend, just taking it like storytelling, and enjoy the tale throughout the music. Just lay back and follow the lyrics :-)

Lyrics
THE LEGEND OF THE SWIFT ARROW

Fighting for the Royal Glory, the armies of Persia were surrounded
by the soldiers of Turan, in a long-lasting, bloody war.
During the month of Tir, the generals agreed to make a truce. It was time
to stop the killings, the combat, and the bloodshed.
They wanted peace, but the bounderies to their lands had not yet been defined.
They knew this Holy War must come to an end.
They had to find a way.

The final battle cry
Echoed in the night
On the battle field silence reigns
Swords fall from the warriors' hands

The final drop of blood
A final battle to fight
As the soldiers grew weak from the endless war
And from the years-long drought

The leaders faced each other
Weary but standing tall
Now that crossing swords
Did not mean anything at all

When the fighters failed
And their fates unveiled
Protecting their honour
And their claims for their lands still prevailed

Under the rising sun
Hostile skies and dry land
This day they had a chance at last to make peace
A chance to settle their disputes

But slyness in his ways
The commander of Turan
Proposed a deal in exchange to the persians' quest
And he put their courage to the test

He, who wants to own these lands
And for the mastery he claims
He must now use his bow
And shoot far his arrow

The truth we seek, will be found
Our people free and sound
You set your lands' borders
To wherever the arrow hits the ground

Doubt in his heart
The persian commander
At a loss, needed advice
Worried and daunted
He needed to believe
That miracles would be his guide

One from many will arise
The chosen one will justify
And deliver the ultimate sacrifice
The chosen one will set the dividing line

As the night fell
Appeared to him an archangel
Instructed him and guided his way
He told him to build
A strong bow and arrow
To choose his best man
To shoot it away

One from many will arise
The chosen one will justify
And deliver the ultimate sacrifice
The chosen one will set the dividing line

The command weighed
The battle and blood
As he knew what would be done
He faced his men eye to eye
My soul, my life, I sacrifice

He left at dawn
Headed to the mount Damavand
He faced east to the light of day
He cried out loud
The battle cry of victory
The arrow is my life, the arrow is my soul

One from many will arise
The chosen one will justify
And deliver the ultimate sacrifice
The chosen one will set the dividing line

As the sun came down
The arrow hit the ground
At the riverside, the borders were set
With the rules to which they were bound

Forty days and forty nights
They walked to the riverside
Thereby the war ends
As the armies formed the truce, the persians acquired the lands

After years of bloodshed
Came peace again
After years of drought
At last, poured the rain

After years of tears
They were proud again
Soldiers returned home
To their lands and their domains

After that day Arash was never seen or heard from again.
His body was never found.
Travelers told stories about his voice coming to them in the mountains,
when they had lost their way.
He would guide them to safety, saving their lives.

Had to Cut-and-Paste the URL...
...but it was well worth it. Excellent prog here, some fine talent on display. Brought to mind early '70s ELP mixed with '80s Mannheim Steamroller and hints throughout of the Moody Blues -- great stuff!

not only for what you have done for this project, but also for your very kind support throughout. I remember when I mentioned maybe I'd cut this into several pieces, and you said that it was a lot of work and it should deserve being posted as a whole. This was long ago but I never forgot what you said and it boosted me all this time to complete this project.

Epic!
And like great productions of any kind of this scope, it didn't seem long at all and in fact I was hoping it would go longer (I get this way with books too!) Superior work by all of you (with this roster of talent on board, what else would one expect)? I wouldn't alter this one bit--it is stunning. Thanks to all for the commitment and talent forged together here! Michael

I must admit, I was anxious about the length, but I knew you'd be one of those who would take your time to listen. Long ago I tortured people with a 16 minutes' piece and I remember you were one of those who very patiently listened to it. I can't be grateful enough for all this encouragement and kindness Michael, million thanks again.

Great work.
Reminds me in several ways of some Rush; the scale, the vocals a little and even some of the guitar work. In case you have your own views about Rush and they aren't positive, that's a big compliment coming from me.

Hey Stan
I think recording it took several months, but it was also sitting for a long time without anything happening. Dave and I did all we could then Vic came very recently into the project and then it became a reality. Mixing it took several nearly full days. Lucky I'm on holidays now :-) Thanks a lot Stan, you are a very fast song producer and I have been admiring how fast and good you can create and produce songs. So if you say the mix is good, I must be progressing ! Thank you so much !

This is my favorite musical genre, rock mixed with orchestral instruments, and I particularly like progressive rock. Back in time I wanted to make a collection of folk legends, I had some Indian, Scandinavian, Celtic, Australian, etc legends I wanted to work on, but then only this one happened :-)

Many thanks for your kind comment.

For your time to listen. About the legend, while I was looking around on internet for information to build up the story, I understood that this makes pretty much an important part of the folklore in today's Iran. I think it's part of their culture.

Swift Arrow
First, I think it's encouraging to everyone that you would take on such a large project and bring it to completion. I admire your effort and diligence. And what a "completion"! Sits well in the "traditional" classic prog rock format. Excellent performances all around. I especially liked the spoken part and Vic's tasteful guitar work. A lead vocal tour de force. Wow. Incredible production quality, too. Congratulations to you and your collaborators, and thanks for posting this truly epic piece.

Epic idea...
and what appears to be an epic recording, too. I will get over to soundcloud to check it out, too. Such an ambitious idea. The sample you give here is quite an enticement. Do I hear "rock opera" somewhere in the wings?

It was indeed quite an ambition and I'm so grateful to Dave and Vic to help me to make it happen.

It's initially not part of the rock opera idea actually. I have been quite distracted with a lot of things lately but I will take a moment to get back on track on this (which is even a greater ambition). I'll take a moment to talk about it to you.
