Time Of Mourning

Description
My mother died on the 29th of November; I was holding her hand when she died, peacefully and in no pain. The absence of pain was due to the excellent care she had in the hospital where she died; she had cancer and it can be extremely painful. This tune started as an expression of how I felt thinking about her a few days ago.

On the technical side I spent a lot of time after writing this shifting the velocity and timing of every individual note to get a better expressive performance. This was after advice in a comment from Bowman on a previous piece. Composing music on the piano-roll editor (as I do) has the hazard that the timing ends up too perfect, so shifting each note backwards or forwards a few milliseconds helps make it more realistic. It seems to work. Even the chords in this have notes that don't quite start at exactly the same time, and it does make an audible difference. Another lesson from a fellow MacJammer, this is the kind of thing I came here for so a big thanks to Bowman!

Note on the update: A friend of mine listened to the previous version of this online, then rang me; being a pianist she'd noticed some tiny "mis-keyed" notes, notes that were the right note at the right time, but didn't sound as if the pianist had hit them correctly. Being the obsessive perfectionist that I am, I thought that had to be put right, so here it is. I also made two small changes to the tune itself, which I think are improvements; they are very small; that's it now, it's finished; probably... Obsessive Compulsive Tweak Disorder, me?

Piano
Fine piece. Piano sounds like someone playing to me. I like the way the two voices intertwine. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks!
A lot of feeling went into it as well as a lot of mental effort to get the two lines working together. Surprisingly it took me less time to write than most of my pieces.

I can't...
... think of much to say about this piece except for the fact that it's beautiful and straight from the heart.

I'm sorry for your loss. Stay strong!

healing music
i think you as an artist must feel the beginning of closure. One can ever replace their mother but it just opens a place where others can become even more significant. I get this feeling form this. Thanks.

Expression
Simple, hopeful (imo) expression. It appears you applied some valuable production info from some others in a most positive manner.
I want to checkout piano roll player, think about awigze's comment and listen some more, soc, dl appreciated!

A healing process
The whole event is like a healing process, very nicely done with drama and passion though not excessively, I love it.

Thanks for sharing, downloaded.

P.S I'm so sorry for your loss.

This is very touching
and your story has quite a meaning to me. Musicwise, it's a beautiful composition. I found it so hard having a single piano piece, composed so nicely in a way to be sufficient by itself. Bravo ! And you're very right, the editor usually provides things too perfect to sound natural on some tools there is kind of a swing or humanize kind of functions, tough I use them only for drums. Not sure if they would be any better than taking care of the notes individually as you did.

Very diligent, nice work.

Hi Fire_Angel....
Sorry for your loss. Mother's are very precious and they are greatly missed when they are no longer around. I don't dwell on that notion when I think of my mother, who is still being a wonderful, caring mother to me.

I enjoyed the piece. I would think you could develop this theme in any number of musically-viable directions. The linearity was, as Charlie suggested before, helped by the varied quantizing of the notes.

Alimar, and artist on Macjams, uses the pen to enter his pieces. Maybe you'd enjoy listening to some of his arrangements. I know I do.

Take care.

Paul

How sad for you indeed, yet how lovely to find an outlet for your feelings and expression in music. This piece sounds very natural.

A generous effort, It never occurred to me to use copy and paste, how odd that seems now you've done it. Thanks for your encouragement, really it helps.

Time Of Mourning
Nice piece. If you had not explained how you composed this I would have thought you simply played it. Not that it matters. It's a beautiful piece, and you did a good job capturing the emotion you most likely felt at the time. Thank you for sharing this!

Thanks.
It's good to know the advice I was given works! I am working hard at the theory studies, but also trying to express myself which is the whole point of my music (and almost everyone else's I imagine). You're welcome to the music!

Even when you think its done ...
... it's never done .... I have thought about revisiting all my stuff ... but it would never be done anyway ... so I just let it stand warts and all .. and move on to the next thing ... but I get it ... its never done .....

Heh heh.
Never finished? Well I do try to strike a balance; I want to have high standards but there are limits to how much time it is sensible to spend on one piece. I will leave work here that's not musically what I intended it to be, but when there are "mis-keyed" notes I consider that a fault worth fixing, since it's just a couple of minutes work. As for the tiny bits of re-write those weren't a lot of work either. This one is done now, so I am moving on to some new tunes.

Thanks for listening and thanks for your input.

Thank you.
It was, surprisingly, one of the quickest tunes to write of all my pieces. I guess the strong feelings provided the inspiration. Thanks again for checking it out and commenting.

First of all
I'm sorry for your loss. My mum died 7 years ago and I remember how hard it was.

And so to the music. A very emotional piece you've created. All the more astounding as you did it on the piano-roll editor. I'm amazed at your perseverance as I know how long it takes!

However you did it I think you should be proud of it as it's a fine tribute.

Best wishes

Dick

Thanks.
Thanks for the best wishes and the song comments. I am enough of an obsessive perfectionist to be willing to work really hard to get the best out of the software, even if it does mean spending two hours tweaking note velocities and timing on a three minute tune. Judging by people's reactions it is actually worth it; if the music sounds more natural and fools an experienced pianist into complimenting my playing (which this did on another site) then it's worth the effort.

Ultimately I want my music to communicate emotion successfully, I guess like all of us here. I'm glad to know other people like it and hear the feeling it is meant to express.

I myself like this better than most of the tunes I've written; surprisingly it was written in a very short time, I guess inspired by the strong feelings. Glad you like it.

Common experience.
Most people have to go through the loss of their parents, and it's usually painful. Usually only those unlucky enough to die young miss the experience. A natural part of life, though we may often wish otherwise.

The music was written quite a bit more quickly than most of my pieces, it really felt like inspiration had struck that day. You're welcome to the music, I'm glad it had some meaning for you too.
