Description
I know some of you may have heard this on Facebook but for everyone else.............

I seem to be prefacing all my recent songs with a story about how long it's taken... so, about 6 years ago I heard a gentle, acoustic love song by Alan Gentle (who regarded it as a sketch) I was much taken with it and asked Alan if he'd let me loose on it.

Six years later and we finally got there. Two years ago I thought I'd try and get the guys from Macjams I meet in London every few months to sing and maybe play some stuff but for various reasons it's taken me since then to put it together a bit at a time.

Many thanks to everyone who gave their time, voices, instruments and advice to what became a project that got a little out of hand.

And of course, thanks to Mr Gentle for allowing me to take his simple, heartfelt song and make it into a monster

Originally started on the Zoom MRS1608 (and some of the guitar and vocal parts are from that era) then Garageband and finally Logic. Vibes and accordion were done using the You Rock midi guitar.

I've lived with this on and off for so long now I am truly mix-blind so I'm sure there will some issues I simply don't hear anymore.

Anyway, all very self indulgent but I like to finish what I start even if takes me 6 years!

Lyrics
Return From The Fray - Copyright 2006 Gentle / Langford

Haul the rope boys, pull for England
Set the sail for Plymouth Sound
Bring this warship home to harbour
Before Katie thinks me drowned

Verse 2
Fingers that once combed her dark hair
Now as hard as timber knots
And this face she kissed so gently
Marked by powder, smoke and shot

Chorus
Will she kiss this mouth, so ugly with curses?
Will she love this heart, so purged of mercy?
Will she hold my face, or turn away?
And will she still love me, when I return from the fray?

Verse 3
Her skin was clear as summer skies
Her step as light as larks at play
But now my hide is tanned old leather
And my feet are hard as clay

Chorus
Will she kiss this mouth, so ugly with curses?
Will she love this heart, so purged of mercy?
Will she hold my face, or turn away?
And will she still love me, when I return from the fray?

Alt Verse 4
But if these years have broke her spirit
And her eyes have turned to grey
I will kiss her weathered hands
When I return from the fray

What a great mix and a fabulous tune ... 6 years ... I can't imagine but it was obviously worth it. Love all the celtic sounding voices. Are the drums programmed ? ... they sound real good. The vibes and accordion are quite authentic sounding ... some real nice guitars. Great job by all!

Good source material
Even if Alan did regard his tune as a sketch I thought it was complete! Vibes and accordion are Logic instruments. I'm pleased the guitars came out OK as most of the rhythm was done on an old Zoom recorder as I started this before I got a Mac!

The drums are a mixture of the "headbop" group in Logic and me hitting the keyboard with one of the electronic drum sets.

Much appreciated Stan :-)

It really
does sound 'finished' and top notch Dick.... it sounds really good, clear and well balanced/mixed..... it was initially very good, but I think you gave it all a new clarity..... the various instruments added sound excellent.... a pleasure helping out what little i did, regards M

Amazing
incredible accomplishment - and sailing strong. I love the vastness of the space and the depth. Very cool - I even heard a little "Drunken Sailor" in there - well hidden. Great fun. Everybody rose to this one.

Drunken sailors'r'us
I was good at the drunken bit but I had no sea legs at all.

Thanks Kevin, it became a labour of love, and the other guys certainly did their part. Starting out 6 years ago I never envisaged this as all I had was the intro and first verse. Strange how things turn out.

Quite...
... the lineup here. That chorus is incredible! What an intro! What a song! What a production! Seriously, some top-notch stuff here! This is what MJ is truly about. I'd consider this one of MJ's classic tracks already.

Thank you for making it happen. You should get together more often, except that I'd ask for the outcome to not take as long, haha!

DWL said 1754 days ago (December 31st, 2012)
Getting together that line-up took some time
and I it has to be the right sort of song and they don't come along very often. I'm afraid this may be a one-off but I have a new set of songs with Graeme coming up so perhaps...

I'm really pleased you enjoyed it and thought it an MJ classic! High praise indeed.

Thanks again Mr Y :-)

what about me?
I'm sure I did some vox on this too...though I'll forgive you for forgetting.
Anyway, sterling collaboration from you and everyone.
A sort of folky Hawkwind ( Bob Calvert era) feel to this in that it's epic and carries you off into different areas...probably a bit like being on a boat and one side is guitar...and then your rocked over to the other side and it's a penny whistle.
Great stuff.
Worth the effort you put into it
cheers

Indeed you did!
So sorry Brendan :-( It was March last year and they were put into the mix then. I think I was hoping for a solo as well so maybe I lost track of the fact I already had your vocals. Now I expect another few people to say "what about me?"

Thanks for the listen (even if I did miss you). I like the boat analogy, very clever.

I'll amend the title now.

Happy New Year

Return from the fray
Quite a group you've assembled here, Dick. I like the sea shanty style of the group. The single vocal is clear and has the right sound for the song. Love the guitar interludes, but all the instrument solos are impressive -they all work! AStounding job of mixing here - I'm not surprised it was years in the making! Nice ending too. Congratulations to all involved.

Wow ... the voices ....

@Damien
Not sure how your comment ended up here but I was really pleased you agreed to do this. I know it took a long time but it all worked out in the end.

A fog-cutter? I had to look it up.

1 1/2 oz light rum
1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz brandy
1 oz orange juice
3 tbsp lemon juice
1 1/2 tsp orgeat syrup
1 tspsweet sherry

I think a light-mist cutter might be all I could manage!

Thanks again Damien

Sorry I'm late to the party...
maybe I should be keelhauled. This is so salty Dick, I almost have to wipe the seaspray from me eyes. So, what's it like herding cats? You and davisamerica are both pretty good at this multi-collab/ensemble thing. Six years is nothing when you've been at sea on a warship: your fingers turn to timber knots, your hide gets tanned as old leather -- well, what am I telling you for? Six years is not too long to wait for this one
Well I have listened to this from the start with a broad smile on my face. I love the mix of the shanty with the solid rocker, clear and emotive vocal, and a band to knock the socks off any pretenders to the folk rock throne. The ending where everyone has a go reminds me of a live performance, playing to the audience. A dash of drunken sailor here and there, awash in musical talent from stem to stern, technical matters fully shipshape, and you have the makings for a winner.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for this kind of song due to my Maritime Canadian roots.

You guys really pulled this one off. Deep bows, a jig and a hornpipe for you!!

Stellar
I am never surprised by the quality of your work, Dick. And this piece is clearly one of your very best tracks yet. I always like the stories you tell, but you tell this one with so much variety in your instrumentation/arrangement and (surprisingly?!) with a restrained vocal presentation, too. What? No lung busting? ... You have assembled a formidable band, too. Combining all of these elements must have been a real trick, one which you handled adroitly to be sure. )ah, the little whistles as a coda are perfect...You are one heck of a composer, Dick. Congratulations of such a wonderful composition and presentation. Truly remarkable.
