Description
Yesterday I cleaned up my recording desk and knocked out the backing track here as a warm up playing with midi again after a very long hiatus. Bass - Piano and Horns are played on the Oxygen 8 keyboard - drums are loops. At the time I was thinking Eddie Harris and Les McCann or Ramsey Lewis - though I can't play piano worth a damn. When I was done I shelved it but felt good about getting anything done. Then I remembered getting a email notification that spitlogic had a new tune up Doors (A Capella) recently - and it was exactly what I needed to get out of my slump. I love what Mitchell does.I immediately downloaded and opened a new GB file. Then I spent a few hours creating a trip-hop backing track for it. This morning I woke up and listened to both tracks and realized that with some time base correction I could drop Mitchell's track into the other thing - and bam! Some tweaking and editing and here it is.
Hope you like it. But more than that - I hope Mitchell likes it.
Thanks man - you lifted me up.

Lyrics
Betrayal from a friend can only sour you
What doesn't kill you can make you more powerful
Small men in the world want to tower you
projecting false image to place more doubt in you
See this life is like we live in a sport
You must follow the rules or be in prison or court
Thank God I was given support
Some that I know with the end of the stick they were given is short
On the edge of a cliff with the threat of an avalanche
Trying not to be pushed but I don't have a chance
What on earth brought me to this circumstance
Where I would try to circumvent the devil and his dance
Under the pale light
Where I can fail life
On the wrong path on the way to hell right?
Praying for forgiveness
For my transgressions
I'm a man stressing
to learn this damn lesson

Feeling like a fool
Cause I just don't get it
The words are in my mouth
But I just don't live it
Yeah I've got beat
But I just want lyric
My door of destiny
I cannot fear it

My love for my people is not displaced
the love for success cannot replace
the love for my God to him I must place
Above all others for he gave me this face
that you see
not the ones on TV
I don't do black face just to make a fee
All that shucking and jiving wont make us free
So I take the key
To awaken me
From sleep
The mind and the body is weak
If the spirit isn't strong enough to herd the sheep
So that makes it absurd to speak
If every word to speak
Is like a giant iceberg to heat
How I wish every word was deep
But its not
Its all that I've got in this world of cheap
But beyond that is priceless
Sons and the daughters of Isis
Speak among the tongue of the righteous

Feeling like a fool
Cause I just don't get it
The words are in my mouth
But I just don't live it
Yeah I've got beat
But I just want lyric
My door of destiny
I cannot fear it

We did a piece a few years back
it was an open collab - there were a bunch of other great versions. Cult of Anubis was the title. Mitchell has a real gift.

A groove that won't quit...
And, simple as it is, it takes the rap to a new level...

I get the McCann and Harris thing...can almost hear a horn coming at times...

The rap is perfectly phrased over the groove, and that's pretty remarkable given how this was put together.

Really nice, you two...

He's very generous and it's always a blast
I really miss DJ French Toast for the same reason. The piano was three tracks of the best I could muster to sound like something. My daughter had trouble with the dissonant chord.
