Description
This is the first of five songs written in our friends' home in eastern France. The lyrics were done when we returned home to "normal life", and more particularly to normal "band life". A major musical disappointment still burning after quite a long time. That's pretty much all you need to know really, except that it's me on everything, and that it's from my new album http://jiguma.bandcamp.com/album/life-on-the-trapeze

It was a lot of fun getting this recorded after travelling for a few months - I'm hoping there might be a few versions of this once I get a bit organised.

Merci Marc et Brigitte!

Afficianados may notice that I'm using regular chords here for a change - that's why I included them :)

It came out of nothing
Wasn’t something you said
No kind of a warning
There’s no voice in my head
I’m out here and stranded
It’s a quandary I’m in
Feeling disbanded
Tied up and branded

I’ve got no illusions
Got no axe to grind
I’m full of confusion
Of the worrying kind

Fishing for compliments
Never know where to look
Got a line in the water
But no bait on the hook
I’m out here and stranded
It’s a quandary I’m in
Feeling disbanded
Tied up and branded

I’ve got no illusions
Got no axe to grind
I’m full of confusion
Of the worrying kind

SOLO

Need to change the equation
Need to pick at the lock
Too much time on my hands
While I run down the clock
I’m out here and stranded
It’s a quandary I’m in
Feeling disbanded
Tied up and branded

I’ve got no illusions
Got no axe to grind
I’m full of confusion
Of the worrying kind

Hey Neil, I really like these lyrics. Fishing for compliments ........ but no bait on the hook"Love that line. The song has a funky feel good groove ... nice air - spaces in the music. Not overdone just enough. Nice guitar solo.
Really like this melody.
Cheers

You're a talented man, Neil - the way you have put all the instruments together is impressive. I especially like the Hammond organ - fills things out very nicely. Characteristic smoky vocal gives the lyrics a bit of edge. Clean sound on the guitar solo and a good flow to the notes. It all works well!

Superb.
Great lyrics, that "fishing for compliments" line got me too. Also well played, nicely mixed and altogether a very professional sounding track. More than that though, it's got a moody feel, something to offer emotionally which to me is far more important. I downloaded this for both entertainment and study, so thanks. Good luck with the album!

Digging the funky and soulful groove from the start. Cool bass line and tone. Nothing like a fat P bass! Great lyrics. Love the guitar solo tone. That rhythm pickup on a Tele is the sweet spot!

Chords!
I could actually play along to this! Cool!

This is a great mix, Neil. On my monitor system, it just sounds finished, polished, smooth but with impact. The vocal rides on out of the mix just enough to be clear, but it all sounds very bandlike to these ears. In the time we've known each other, I think one of the things you've worked on a lot, and that I still need to learn, is the paring away of the non-essential. You end up with very clean, non-busy mixes and arrangements.

I continue to really enjoy your evolution as a lead player. I look forward to your solos...

Thanks for the comment on the mix. I have tried to do the very best mixes I could on each of the 16 album tracks, with varying levels of success. This is definitely one of the best sounding mixes, along with Baume les Dames. The remixes of Big Car - No Shoes and Safe Hands were also significant improvements over the originals. "Less is more" is a big part of how I try to mix these days - a lesson I learnt in The Shed, trying to keep out of other guitarists' way. Glad you played along - I rarely use chords this simple :)

I'm wondering if "disbanded" is a clue
Good stuff as usual Neil: you sound terrific as do all of your playtoys. I'm loving that barbed-wire boat.

It's old news now Richard, but the disintegration of what was shaping up as a very viable live band last year was a tad disappointing.

You...
... still keep raising the bar high at MJ with your excellent production and performance. This is definitely one of your very bests. And YES, I DID notice the *standard* chords that you used. Big changes, same style; Still got that jiguma vibe to it... fine, fine stuff.

I hope that things work out eventually! Best wishes!

It has that
trademark jiguma sound, already in the orchestration and then when you add the lyrics and the sandy voice it is unmistakeably you. Some lights burn out quickly but there will be more lights...there always are. I thought this was delightful. Thanks.

Hey Neil - nice tune - sounds great from the very beginning. That chord structure doesn't waste any time grabbing you and settling you down into the groove. And as usual, great signature sound and style - enjoyed!

Really digging the Organ and the musical groove a mix of Rock and RnB reel slick piece baby. Mix is exceptional and felt..then comes MR. Guit..Vox down and resonant...Temids me of progressive rock late 60's early 70's

Love, love this mix Neil. Such an easy feel and "no pressure" approach. Has a bit of a Donald Fagan feel, just really draws me in. Bass is rich and expressive, lyric and vocal are equally impressive ...this may be one of my favs from you. Excellent all the way round.

Thanks for dropping by to listen Chris!
I've really tried hard to get the best mix my gear will allow for this set of songs - I think you'll find the mix on Safe Hands on the album is a great improvement over the original version too. Any suggestion that I got even a hint of Fagan in there is very much appreciated.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

nice laid back groove, I really like this song Neil, it has a good arrangement and I like the little breaks on the D and Em chords.
Great lyrics and vocals with a wonderful production.
The bass always sounds great and I love the tone of your Tele.
I would be interested to know how you record your drums as they sound like a real drummer playing with some 'feel' if you know what I mean. I know you sometimes use midi for drums and just wondered if that was the case here as they sound great!
Excellent tune and good luck with the album.

Thanks Bob
The drums ......... these days I nearly always use midi drums on my tracks unless I can nab a real drummer. On this track, I think I worked from a midi loop or two for the basic feel, then removed extraneous stuff that didn't fit the mood (in the "piano roll" window). Then I started adding little extras like closing hats, cymbal crashes/splashes, toms and maybe some extra snare hits. I think here I might have made some changes to the kick track too. What I end up with is sounding much more drummer-like these days after lots of learning. I nearly always try to make sure that what I "play" on drums can be played by a single, two handed drummer :) one trick is to work on just a couple of bars at a time. Hope that helps.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

So natural sounding
You've really grown in your music and I love the way your music sounds so natural, nothing mechanical about it other that a work that sounds like you invited a lot of artist to help you out. Enjoyable listen and I appreciate all that music you have to share.
