Description
We've got bushfires within 5km of home at the moment, and I was moved to write some words to an old country styled backing I've had lying around for a while. While we are, at the moment, quite safe from the fires, it does heighten your awareness of the damage they can cause when they are blazing away so near. We are separated from the fires only by thick, dry bush/forest.

The music is from maybe a year ago, but I replayed all the tracks except the pedal steel for this version. I'm playing all instruments except drums (Drums On Demand do such good country drums, and I wanted to finish this quickly) and the pedal steel, which consists of many loops cut, pasted and pitch-shifted to fit the song. I looked at doing a harmony vocal, but nothing sounded right. so it's just a single vocal track at the moment.

I enjoyed doing this.

Lyrics
Everybody Cries
©2013 Neil Porter

It’s 44 in the shade today
Heat that takes your breath away
I’m hoping this north wind will stop
There’s burning trees on the mountain top
Gumtree smoke on the late night air
We’re not going anywhere
Bad news coming every way

We’re counting on a fire break
I’m thinking of my last mistake
I’m thinking of our family
Thinking most about you and me
Gumtree smoke on the late night air
We’re not going anywhere
Bad news coming every way

Everybody lives
Everybody dies
Anybody here can see
The heartbreak in my eyes
Everybody loves
Everybody cries
Is anybody listening?

SOLO

Everybody lives
Everybody dies
Anybody here can see
The heartbreak in my eyes
Everybody loves
Everybody cries
Is anybody listening?

A bit too late for “best laid plans”
That fire truck’s in the street again
Keeping cool, I’ve got the blues
Things look bad on the midnight news
Gumtree smoke on the late night air
We’re not going anywhere
Bad news coming every way

Friends cut off on the north of town
Hope they left before the sun went down
Fire’s up and the wind is too
I close my eyes and think of you
Gumtree smoke on the late night air
We’re not going anywhere
Bad news coming every way

Everybody lives
Everybody dies
Anybody here can see
The heartbreak in my eyes
Everybody loves
Everybody cries
Is anybody listening?
Is anybody listening?

Thanks Fla.
You'll eventually get used to my voice - that's about as emotional as it gets :) Thanks for having a listen.

Sounds like...
... this one came easy to you. Definitely sounds simpler than your previous work but, nonetheless, as good. Great track!

Yeman!
The lyrics came pretty quickly - I finally figured lyrics are easy once you know what it is you're writing about. It's definitely simpler than most of my songs, but country just can't get too complicated ;) Glad you enjoyed it.

I love this kind of tune ... country boy at heart ... you've nailed the sound. Good job with the pedal steel. I have done that myself with the cutting and shifting to make it work with the melody and you've done a great job of it. The steel really gives it the right feel. I try to mimic pedal steel when I play country leads on a guitar but there's nothing like the real thing. The opening lead in my opinion would have sounded great clean with a bit of verb ... don't know if I love the delay ... nicely played though. Strong words about a pretty scary topic ... I've been paying attention to it in the news. I have heard that some of the fires have been deliberately started but I don't know if that's true ... frightening stuff but a real nice tune came out of it. Yeah harmonies in the chorus would have been real nice ... call me next time LOL
Great song Neil ... love the genre

Thanks for the listen Stan ......
..... and the kind words. Unfortunately some of the fires have been the work of arsonists apparently, but mostly they're the result of lightning strikes, loose sparks from machinery etc. They haven't determined the cause of the three near us yet, but they have gone from "out of control" to "controlled" today. A wildlife park that looked like it was going to be destroyed has been saved and only 2 homes have been lost. 180 hectares of land burnt out though. I'd normally have kept working on a harmony, but I wanted to get this out while it was relevant. Thanks for the offer. I'll keep it in mind.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Stay safe...
And be ready to skeedaddle if necessary. This is a great tune to roll down the with or to just listen. Nice guitar work. You always get such a great sound on your songs. No exception here.

Thanks for the listen and the advice! We have a list of things to grab, and kind of know where we'll go if the bush behind us goes up.
Glad you enjoyed your listen.

You heard right Tim
For the first time we now have a colour for "above 50 degrees" on our weather maps, and it covered a big part of central Oz this week. We're fine thanks Tim, and even better when we found out that our friends' house hadn't been destroyed as we had heard.
You're welcome,
Neil

Great lyrics, Neil - bushfire season is scary! I love the rolling country feel you get to this. The tone of the instruments is excellent - the Tele's opening phrases set that country tone perfectly. As always, beautifully clean mix. A professional job in all respects!

I guess you know the feeling in fire season. We have the Ben Boyd National Park 200 metres behind our house which goes down to Eden. If that goes up we will be in a bit of strife. I must chop down some trees near the house! Thanks for the listen and compliments.
Cheers from "up north".

the twang is the thing
that opening tele was so perfect. i dig the steel guitar as well, nicely done.
the whole song has nice country vibe as you intended.

smokey skies... we had a major wildfire last summer and a smokey haze. but it wasn't anything near the size you folks are having

Fire sure is scary - it's a bit like the sea. You can admire it's power, but can't really do anything to control it when it gets it's mind set on destroting stuff.

Nicely done Neil
Excellent playing and arrangement (neat bit of slicing and dicing for the pedal steel - sounds like it was played for the song)

I like the lyrics and your delivery suits the song perfectly. I get a sense of panic creeping through the apparently relaxed vocals.

Yes, a keeper and best wishes to those caught up in this.

Cheers

A real toe-tapper
for such a potentially(?) deadly situation. Yes, the power of Mother Nature is nothing to laugh at: water, air, earth or fire. We are all (I'm sure) crossing fingers, holding breaths, or praying for you and your countrymen and women.
Nice job Neil, esp. on the chopped up steel.

It's a scorcher
Australia seems to suffer really badly, and ironically has the big coal industry that is solidly to blame. Just revamp your economy and you'll be fine.... Meanwhile it's the little guy that pays the piper.

Despite a lack of pipers, I really enjoyed this song.

In the classic form of writing country about what is close to your heart and close to home - sorry to hear that this time it's a fire...not good. Gorgeous slide. Sending cooling vibes your way.

I like the quality. The vocals seemed a little hot, but the musical quality and the rest of the production works well. Not my genre of choice usually, but you kept me listening. Great work! I loved it!

Sweet & Sour
Dire news delivered with such a sweet sound.

Yes, we keep hearing about how hot it has been in the Southern Hemisphere .. but hearing it from someone on a shared social network makes it seem less abstract and more real.

It's a good, strong vocal...
...maybe one of your strongest. Well phrased, right in the pocket, and just a nice vocal sound and tone... And it sits really well in the mix, to my ears...

Good song. That's pretty neat about how you did the pedal steel. I think the drums are really well suited to the country vibe, and they sound good.

I know I keep saying this, but you've become this stellar mixer, Neil. And not a good mixer who's just pushing up faders on loops and synths; you're having to play with that illusion of everything being performed together in acoustic space, and you get better and better at that.
