ALL FALL DOWN

Description
This is a political song that I wrote in 2007 - http://www.macjams.com/song/30278 - one of my "early jiguma" period. With a serious creative drought going on at the moment and an impending Federal election later in the year I decided to give it a more current treatment. Apart from the words, melody and chord structure there's very little similarity between this and the original.

For me, this version is way more interesting.

All instruments (guitars, bass, keys, midi drums and midi percussion)are me.

All Fall Down
© 2007 Neil Porter

Verse: | Bm | A |

Chorus: | D | A | Bm | F# | G | A | Bm |

Bridge: | D | A | Bm | Bm | D | A | Bm | Bm | D | A | Bm | E | D | A | Bm |

I’ve always been an open man
I wear my heart here on my sleeve
I always try to make things work
I try to say what I believe
You might disagree with me
But I’ll try to understand

If you want to talk to me
You’ve got to say just what you feel
You’ve got to leave my options open
You’ve got to tell me something real
I’ve heard it all before
And I’m hearing it again

If you’re making promises
You don’t plan to keep
Don’t even plan to try
If you stack them all together
They all fall down

You want my approval
Do you want something else from me?
Something unconditional
That’s a bit too much you see
You burnt me once before
And you’re coming round again

It’s coming ‘round again
Like a mark upon a wheel
You try to win me over
You try to cut a deal
You might disagree with me
But I’ll try to understand

Stack them all together
They all fall down
It pays you to remember
They all fall down
Stack them all together
They all fall down - crashing in a pile
You just can’t forget it
They all fall down

If you’re making promises
You don’t plan to keep
Don’t even plan to try
If you stack them all together
They all fall down

If you win another round
It won’t change the way I feel
Just have to spend another year
Shoulder firmly to the wheel
It’s happened times before
And it’s coming round again

I’ve always been an open man
I wear my heart there on my sleeve
I always try to make things work
I try to say what I believe
You can disagree with me
But try to understand

Cees!
Thanks for the listen and comment. It does seem that politicians are hell-bent on manipulating us for their own purposes. I used to have a pretty clear idea of which political party I supported, but these days I don't trust either of the available options that much.
Cheers from Oz

ALL FALL DOWN
Nice stripped back arrangement, Neil. It gives the lyrics more focus. Australian politics is crying out for some vision and honesty. Parliament has descended into a point-scoring, slanging match. It is so unedifying. Quality song and fine, clear, mix. Nice mid drums. Take care, Peter.

Sir! You are quite a drummer! A lot of nuance and detail in the drum track. Love that bass tone. Great groove! The chorus has a great Dire Straits vibe. Mix and production are totally pro!

My very firsat instrument
was drums - I had a kettle drum when I was a pre-schooler and had a few favourite radio program introductions I used to play along to - my poor parents! I wish I'd been encouraged to play drums - I'd love to be able to play them live. Glad you enjoyed my little ditty!
Cheers Andy,

All Fall Down
Cool song Neil, I agree with Andrew, you got a great bass sound and absolutely fantastic drum track, cymbals sound live. The song is relaxed feeling but has just the right spark. Organ, steel drum adds a nice reggae feel.

Thanks for listening Chris
Needless to say, the drums took a very long while, all of which I enjoyed a lot. All I'd need to do this live is a drummer with a little extra in the arm department :).
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

All Fall Down
Politicians here seem worse than they've ever been. It would be good if they all just admitted that and left - preferably without taking their huge pensions! But back to the song - you have done a great arrangement, Neil. You bring in interesting elements when needed to change things around. I like the funky drum beat and the bass line that goes with that. Great work!

Really digging the drums
How it carries the tune, with mostly vocals and percussion and especially later where it turns into a bebop. The chorus has a fine melodic feel with extended chords strums. Enjoyable. I'm pretty sure I've heard this before and I'm liking this version.

The music only...
...quite interesting rhythm section that punctuates this whole track. I was immediately drawn into it because it was so unusual. The break into the mellow chorus is arresting, too, and adds great interest to the form of this song. Seems to me that it takes some musical courage to break away like that. You make it work beautifully, though. The bridge is, ahem, groovy and its slide into that mellower section works really well. Overall production is so very solid and expertly mixed, your vocal rising to the front as it should be. Thank you for that. ... Great song. and the graphic kind of tells it all, doesn't it. Nice choice.

Solid!
Great job in keeping mix clean, punchy and transparent. Sounds great, and makes perfect musical and literal sense with the lyrics (being honest and straightforward).

I was surprised at the steel drum solo and equally impressed with your midi drum skills. Excellent songwriting and vocal performance too! And paying attention to the lyrics - may I say that in terms of job options for you - musician: check - politician? never! :) even though my bet is you'd make a better one than most.

When MJ wasn't working
I managed to listen and fave this but it wouldn't let me comment and I've only just remembered.

Quality work Neil. Lovely tight playing and the now trademark Porter delivery. An interesting choice of lead instrument - steel drums?

Cheers
