We Can Dance (with Gadzooks & Loob)

Description
This started with the idea of a couple escaping from their everyday tasks for a while by dancing together. The first version was slower, but I was worried about whether it had the right amount of fun in it, so tried a faster version, then sought some opinions on which worked better. My thanks to Andrew Lack, Neil Porter, Stan Gadziola and Fred Jam for lending their ears to this. The song needed some good drums, so Freddy came to the rescue, and some sparkle so Stan added a heap of things. Then there was the mixing. I ended up with many mixes from several people (Stan, Neil and Peter Thorneycroft plus a few of mine) and eventually just picked one that I thought worked well. Of course, that might mean a different choice tomorrow after listening to them all again...

My thanks to Stan and Freddy for what they've brought to this - their talent has made a huge difference to the final version. Thanks also to Neil, Andrew and Peter for listening, commenting and experimenting.

I hope you enjoy listening!

Lyrics
We Can Dance

Verse 1
The rain is slanting sideways, the wind is hitting hard
Looks like we’ll be staying in tonight
We could get on Facebook, we could send some mail
Or we could dance

Chorus
Let’s dance
We can dance
Let’s dance

Verse 2 & 3
The elder child is at her friend’s, the younger fast asleep
At last there is a little time for us
There are dishes in the sink, and clothes in one big heap
But let’s dance

The garden beds are full of weeds, the gutters filled with leaves
The list of things to do won’t go away
A tyre on the car is flat, there’s wood that must be chopped
It’s time to dance

Chorus
Let’s dance
We can dance
Let’s dance

Verse instrumental

Bridge
Put on your dancing shoes
Rock around the clock
The samba and the tango
Dance until we drop

Verse 2
Jive around the kitchen, waltz along the hall
May I have the pleasure of this dance?
The lights look just like chandeliers, and you’re dressed up for the ball
So let’s dance

Chorus
Let’s dance
We can dance
Let’s dance

A fine song
Love the harp the vocals are spot on... especially the backup bit. Nice guitar/key noodling that carries you through. Very western sounding... Enjoyed.

Love the song. Well written. So many will relate. Very nice arrangement. Fred nailed the groove. The electric guitar fills and harp lines add nice color. One of your finest!

Hi Neil
I have to admit I got to "mix overload" stage. Anyway, I think it's finished up sounding OK. Thanks again for your advice through the process - I have great respect for your ability to get a song to sound good! I hope all is well up north!

We Can Dance
I liked the song when I listened to the first slower version but I really liked the feel when Freddy added his drums. . I admire your patience in letting it all progress and in finally choosing a mix. I enjoyed being part of it. A great idea and a well composed song.
Cheers

Hi Stan
One day I should put up the first version with just me on it so people can see just how different it is after your work. I love the tone of the harp, the way the keys fill things out, the bouncy bass and the lightness added by the harmonies. Once again - thank you!

Hi Freddy
I think it was obvious from hte first version of this, which used drum loops, that it needed real drums. Everyone who has heard that early version and the version after your drums were added made the comment about how much brighter it was. You nailed it, Fred, and again I thank you!

We Can Dance
Positive, feel good song, Philip (except now you still have all those chores to do and you probably need an afternoon nap - you're not a spring chicken anymore you know) :-) The arrangement works well and the guitar lines suit the song nicely. I like the bridge contrast, too. You can't go wrong with Stan and Freddy doing the three-step with you. Congrats! Talk soon, Peter.

Yep...
You CAN dance, and this track is the perfect expression of it. Wonderful guitar work throughout. No surprise there. You keep dealing out these little gems, Philip. Now you write a distinctly country-western-type number. Hey. You guys have kangaroos, right? ... What a happy little tune. A very pleasant listen.

Kangaroos
We do have kangaroos here, Paul -quite a lot of them in some places. Not so many where Fred and Stan live, though, and they are responsible for a fair bit of the bounce in this song! Thanks for listening and for the positive comment - much appreciated!
