Description
07-01

written last december[2012] and inspired by an old Max Fleischer cartoon from 1936. I love these old quirky films and particularly love the work of Fleischer. No deep meaning or message here just an old fashioned nursery rhyme style song. I wrote it on guitar while I was watching the television.

Lyrics
Come into my parlour said the spider to the fly, we could have a future you and I,
It’s a little dingy there’s no need to be afraid, you will be so very glad you stayed,
Your room is on the second floor – do enjoy your stay,
And you’ll get five star service every day.

Come into my parlour said the spider to the fly, you’ll be safe on that you can rely,
Goodness gracious me I didn’t realize the time, let me take your luggage while you sign,
The guestbook please put something nice for everyone to read,
While I’m preparing for my midnight feed.

At the cobweb hotel I’ll be spending sometime with you,
At the cobweb hotel there will always be things to do.

Come into my parlour said the spider to the fly, we’ll ignore the shadows passing by,
I will come and visit you sometime in the night, across your ceiling at the speed of light,
Dropping down without a sound, while you’re fast asleep,
Moving in I’ll make my final leap.

At the cobweb hotel I’ll be spending some time with you,
At the cobweb hotel there will always be things to do.
Break as verse-
[rpt] Dropping down without a sound –etc
[rpt] Chorus

So I'm driving home from work today listening to some MJ music on my iPod when "who'd like teeth like harriet harman" came on. I thought to myself, "I wonder when John will post a new one?" And here it is! Love your original and signature style. The sliding software guitars are a great touch. The jazz piano was quite unexpected and very enjoyable!

thanks
I'm pleased you liked it, an excuse to try out some of my new cakewalk sounds, most of which I'm quite pleased with. I have a bit of a backlog of stuff here at the moment but just haven't got around to posting much of it. Thanks again for listening.

We've missed you around here. This has a very winning melody, and the kind of clever and twisted
lyric I've come to associate with you. Btw, I do some of my best work noodling in front of the telly. Enjoyed this, John.

thank you John
I have been changing my pc which for me has been like moving house as I am not really a hi tech person - Files and Folders everywhere so this is why I haven't been around for a while. Still, it's all sort of working out now I'm glad to say.

The layered, harmony vocal work sounds just great, John. Your music is so distinctive and unique. Lovely backer with some fine piano improvisation. Clever, engaging and most welcome. Thanks, Peter.

Always worth a listen John
I liked the arrangement and the instrumentation. Real guitars or VST? I'm guessing VST but they're very effective.

Loved the little jazz interlude at about 3:00. Unexpected!

Cheers

Dick

Hello Dick
Thank you and sorry for the delay in responding. The guitar was one of the Cakewalk Pro Dimension sounds which I am still experimenting with. Generally I'm very pleased with the program now I've finally downloaded it. I sometimes play real guitar if I think I can get away with it !

John.

I had to look up Max Fleischer and then realised I already knew his stuff.
I can just imagine this as a soundtrack to one of his cartoons and if I was thus able I would do a special vid...but I can't :-)
Your productions are getting so much clearer, not that I minded the old ones, it just allows things more space to breathe and catch the listeners ear.
Love the slide guitar and the lounge section at the end really takes you by surprise
Nice one John
cheers

thank you Kingbee
I have always preferred Fleischer to Disney, this was from a cartoon called 'the Cobweb Hotel' which was on a DVD of this stuff I sent for in America. There is a song in the cartoon also called The Cobweb Hotel. This is the first thing I recorded using my new pc and software so I am pleased you think it's an improvement. The new sounds seem very much easier to mix compared to my last SELECTION of 'whatever I could get my hands on'. -

you do John, and this is definitely no exception.
Adore the jazz piano at the end too. Wonderful rhythm.

Your style brings a whole new meaning to the word frightening. A brilliant mixture of sounds vocal harmonies and even a splash of jazz to make me feel comfortable, and then the lights go out! I love your creativity-a great rendition!

I think I tried to make this a bit spooky just like those old quirky cartoons - the jazz bit at the end just seemed to happen on it's own.

Stilted...
...and engaging. The number itself is, to me, reminiscent of some of the Beatles tracks, one note per syllable of your lyric. It makes the listener sit up and pay attention because if he doesn't, the story will pass by too quickly... This is really nicely orchestrated, too, and chunks along at a solid and unwavering clip. I think it's pretty darned cool. ... That cool piano thing at the end was unexpected and much fun. (And I, too, love just about anything Max Fleischer did. Man, what an outcome.)

Sorry for my late response to your very encouraging and kind comment, the little jazzy section at the end just seemed to fall in there naturally. Nice to meet another Fleischer fan.

I
somehow missed this along with a few others John so I'm now catching up.
I love this, great harmonies you sing and I like the instrumental backing, nice arrangement and a lovely piano piece you play at the end.
Very much enjoyed.
