Description
When Andrew Lack offers an open collaboration on a tune with beautifully nuanced guitars, it's time to get to work. I have added vocals and a lead guitar line to his tune "Orphan Changes" (http://www.macjams.com/song/76059). I hope I've added some value to it!

Thanks Andrew for making this available - it's a wonderful gift!

Lyrics
Fading in the Dark
Music: Andrew Lack | Words: Philip Gardner

She sits so quiet in a corner of the room
She waits and wonders and stares into the gloom
Is this another evening of being here alone
Is this another night when he will not come home

He sits on a bar stool staring straight ahead
Drinking so the demons will maybe leave his head
Outside it is raining inside it is hot
His mind is burning up with all that he has thought

All the history they have shared
All the time they knew they cared
Are fading in the dark
All the words remembered now
Used as ways to break their vows
They’re drifting in the dark

She calls her best friend then she starts to cry
She’s looking for some sympathy someone to tell her why
Running through her mind are all the things that she will say
In the endless argument that never goes away

He seeks some company and a bottle is his friend
Does what he’s always done and hopes that it will end
Hoping that some pretty girl will help him through the night
Easier than going home to start another fight

All the history they have shared
All the time they knew they cared
Are fading in the dark
All the words remembered now
Used as ways to break their vows
They’re drifting in the dark

They’re fading in the dark

I
like the lyrics and they fit perfectly with Andrew's wonderful guitar piece, especially the chorus section with the downward progression.
Nice guitar fills and vocals that now make this song perfect and I'm sure Andrew will love this.
Excellent work Philip and very much enjoyed.

Elements of Knopfler
It's a missing Dire Straits song!

Really nicely done Philip. You've worked the lyrics and melody beautifully around Andrew's fine bad.

Cheers

I appreciate the comment, Dick. I'm pleased that you think the two parts fit together and come out as a song. Missing Dire Straits song? I'd better phone Mr Knopfler and tell him we've found a song of his - I'm sure he'll be wondering where it got to :-) THanks for listening - your support is always much appreciated!

Fine work, Philip. The story you have woven around Andrew's quality backing track is exceptional. I also really like how you resolved the descending "chorus" section. The additional guitar fills suit the piece so well, too. Mightily impressed. Talk soon, Peter.

though I'm not surprised. Andrew's original was wonderful and you have added a layer of stunning quality. Your lyrics flow organically, your vocal is warm and intimate (as usual), and your guitar additions fit perfectly. Very, very well done.

Hi Richard
I'm delighted you thought the two elements fit together well, Richard. From the moment I heard Andrew's tune (and knew it was up for collaboration) I was interested in trying something, so I'm pleased that something that appeals has come out of that. Thanks, as always, for your support!

I have admit that as soon I heard Andrew's tune I wanted to work with it - it has a subtle moodiness amongst some sparkling guitar work. Delighted you think the blend worked. Thanks for listening and for taking the time to comment - much appreciated!

Great work on your contributions. The two halves feel like they are made for each other.

I just played yours immediately after the original. I think you're compressing the sound a little, which makes you lose some of Andrew's dynamics.

Thanks for the comment on the way they fit together, Vic - that's good!

Re the compression, that's interesting. I didn't do anything directly to the track, but did use Ozone on the whole thing, which may have had the effect you describe. I'll go back and have a play with it...

!!!
I listened to Andrew's posting .. and saw that you had taken on his challenge to do something with his soundtrack. Wow! Not only did you developed wonderful guitar leads to the rhythm track, but you also conceived and wrote a contemporary drama to synch it all together. Excellent performance! This perfectly embodies the dynamic power of musical networking here at Macjams.

Thanks for the comment, Warren - it's much appreciated! It helps when adding to a piece of music to have great material to start with - Andrew's piece set the style and mood, so the rest came fairly quickly, riding on the back of his creativity. Glad you enjoyed it - thanks for stopping by.
