Description
This is the first track that I completed for this year's RPM Challenge with the help of Anne Cozean on vocals. For the challenge I limited myself to playing only a Sequential Circuits Pro-One analog synth in a series of duets. My collaborators chose the instrument or voice of their choice and stuck with it. Anne did an incredible job here as usual. The song titles are taken from the functions/graphics as they appear on the synth. The entire 10 song CD can be found here: http://alonetone.com/bud/playlists/duets

Thanks for the kind comments -
Anne really brought the heart and soul into this experiment in Portishead vibe capturing (on my part that is). So glad she made it her own. I think it's even in 4/6 time - a new adventure for me - or a new dillusion. You tell me.

haunting
Love how that static-wave pops up and then slowly fades away, only to return. I'm 2 tracks in on your album on alonetone (this wasn't listed as the first so maybe I'm actually working backward). Vocals are great, too. Love the concept you worked with for this.

hypnotizing
I like the trance-inducing nature of this, it does pulse along very nicely. very interesting rhythmically, harmonically and timbrally.
cool vocals too. I really enjoyed listening to this one!

Haunting
Beautiful voice, and a dreamy and dark soundscape as a back drop. Just seen Stoker - this would make a great soundtrack to it.

Very, very nice work
from both of you. Great choices, Bud, not only for Anne's vocal but also to limit yourself to one instrument: that should give a definite cohesiveness to the tracks in spite of the different collaborators. Portishead works for me.

From the unreleased soundtrack...
...to the unreleased Blade Runner sequel...

I really love seeing what people do with limitations, and I think self-imposed limitations get really interesting...

I sometimes get impatient with MacJams efforts based on 'noise-y' synths, but I really think this works. The contrast with Anne's simple-but-rich vocals and the more mechanical/industrial and brooding sounds of the synth is in perfect balance to my ears...

wave form
Great collab from you 2.
Works really, really well.
One would think you did this kind of stuff together a lot.
I used to be in a synth duo and the other guy had a Pro-5 while I played a Roland SH-09 and we had access to an old EMS synth as well.
Happy days making strange noises.
Anyway, great track
Cheers

You mean you turn out a song like this every 3 days? I'm jealous.

This is fantastically ominous/moody/dark. Much enjoyed.

Fascinating sounds from the synth, and beautiful tone to Anne's voice. Excellent work!

Again - many thanks to Anne
for breathing life into the machine. Her voice is so purely musical - and she is an absolute joy to work with. Really creative - fast - and she calls me boss. I'm so flattered. I can't recommend the RPM Challenge highly enough. This was my fourth year participating and it always yields surprising results.

The challenge
An ominous, foreboding soundtrack .. perfectly matched by the emotional yearning of the singing. Short, suggestive and pulsating with desire.

Limitation can be conducive to artistry .. as we find creative ways to work within restrictions. It appears you have created a challenge within the challenge : )

Wow - overwhelmed by the respones here
However - it's obvious that the best way to draw an audience is to team up with Anne. Her voice and all around talent and smarts make the most of anything she touches.

Great vocal harmony.
That's the thing that stands out in this number for me. The pulsing bass/lower voices becomes a little much for my ears, but I have to admit that it's almost like a heartbeat, so I think it serves your purpose well. That ending is a surprise, and a good one. Right in sync with the brooding, mystic feeling of the rest of the number. (I'm sorry: I couldn't completely understand the lyrics. Maybe that's not so important.)

Anne's sinuous vocals work in so well with the darkish, ominous nature of the backer, Bud. Wonderful atmospheric piece. A fine collaboration. Congratulations. Regards, Peter.

Ooooo
I love the minimalist aspect to this song, it works so well. The synth sounds so ominous and looming and the vocals add perfectly to the feeling. I'm creeped out. The vocalist reminds me of Shirley Manson, which is a great thing. Well done.
