Description
This is track 5 from the DUETS CD I recorded in February for the RPM Challenge. Symphony 101 aka Yves Baar sent me a solo piano piece and the midi file to work with. As with the rest of the projecte I only used a Pro-One analog synth for my parts. So - here it was me following his lead - and in so doing I found myself using the midi and assigning Trombones and French Horns to the track while tweaking some velocities and durations - while also slowing the BPM from 100 to 80 I believe. Otherwise it is as he played it for piano. Then I added a couple of tracks on the synth to double or contrast against Yves' part. Being analog - my synth did not use any of the original midi info. The arpeggiator was dialed in by ear etc.
Thanks to Yves for playing along in the challenge - and thanks to you for listening.

Very cool Kevin
Your CD seems to be a great hit: you and your collaborators worked well together and you, especially, seem to have been inspired. It can't be easy following the guidelines of the RPM Challenge but you've gotten more than a couple of terrific tracks out of it. Great sounds here and nice development.

the RPM Challenge is always a great motivator - and the best way to spend February if you are not in the Caribbean.

RESONANCE
Interesting stuff, Bud. I hear tones and sounds that remind me of a host of old(er) movies and tv shows. This piece could have easily been among those works. Enjoyed!

Low brass...
...Great sound that pulses with energy. I think this is an auspicious and ominous soundscape that belongs in a sci-fi sequence of some sort. I also have the feeling that a tune could grow out of this...or at least you might affect a "life" part way through bt shifting tonal center (higher). As it is, though, you have managed to. Reate some very very rich sounds by dialing all those knobs. I appreciate your courage in continuing to expand the spectrum of your own creativity. You are doing some unusual and interesting things.

Much appreciated Paul
You always have something supportive and instructive to say. You are right that this could go places. The nature of the Challenge is that there is only enough time to get anywhere at all. Because of work I actually had to record all ten songs in two weeks and then mix on the road.

Lift...
That's LIFT. So sorry. And just amazement that you created all these tracks in two weeks. A "creative bender" one might say. You rock!

The Pro-One
was quite ubiquitous in the eighties. Part of it's charm is that nothing can be saved - so every time you use it it's square one - or you've been smart enough to write out the patches you like.

Great collaboration guys! I miss the days when keyboard players carried around several analog synths. Thanks for bringing back that vibe.

There are a lot of great new analog synths
out on the market - smaller and easier to work with than this guy. I give a lot of credit to anyone who performed live analog back in the day.

This is great! ... love the brass synth combo ... it's warm, deep and mesmerizing. Like how it turns ominous and dark, growly at about 2:20... Enjoyed.

The brass voices were the key - along
with the great composition that Yves created of course. I like the Pro-One best for it's deep voices and the growl factor available through the white noise generator.

This is a real depth and, dare I say, resonance to this piece, Bud. The brass and church organ style tones are epic. Congratulations to you both. Had the windows rattling. Regards, Peter.

Electronic music for the soul. Kevin, this reaches deep and connects. Amazing how an instrumental can accomplish more than words and music together can. Kudos.

Kevin,
Not only it was a great pleasure, but again, I was amazed to see your genius on this work. The material was shaped so nicely into the overall sound of the album !

I was very much interested in RPM concept but this time around I couldn't make sure to commit to it myself. So I thought, at least I could support, when I saw your call for collaborators. I'd like to say I'm totally pleased and honored for being part of DUETS.

The four completed RPM albums I know from my musical friends are great works, I had great time listening to all. I definitely recommend :-)

Every year
I say I'm going to take part, maybe next year.

This is excellent. I like the way the instruments are introduced. Subtle nuances then they appear.

Great work guys.

Cheers

A headphone feast!
Karen's about those low tones...some notes are just fun to listen to, and you've got quite a few of those... You manage to sustain interest while not getting all bloop bloop bloop plinkety plonk... there's a nice sense of cohesiveness to this, and it ends up being very musical...
