Description
One of the earliest recordings on which I play tenor sax. Taped on a reel to reel tape recorder around November 1968; a live in-studio session of The Twilights. I was 17 years old. I had just joined this band. This is our first rehearsal, as far as I can remember. We had just finished playing the James Brown song, "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag." Vince , the guitarist, and I decided to continue with a guitar/sax jam which is called "Papa Part III." It went on for quite a while, so hang in there...

Guitar: Vince Roggio
Bass: Carl D'Guisseppe
Drums: David Carlino
Tenor Sax 2: Wes Turbovinck
Tenor Sax 1: Jack Miller

The Song art photo is actually from a year or so later. From left to right: Vince (guitar), Russell (vocal), Don (bass), and me down in the corner (tenor).

This is a YouTube video I made of our cover of Papa's Got A Brand New Bag recorded during the same session. The vocalist is Herk McGruder, who does one heck of "a James Brown"

Funky Good
You guys did a great job of capturing the James Brown Band sound! It sends you into a trance after about 4 minutes. Nice sax and a solid groove. Loved those reel to reels - mine had a sound-on-sound feature and was the envy of the neighborhood. Thanks for sharing.

James Brown sound...
Thanks, Martin. I have our cover of Papa's Got A Brand New Bag from the same session. I can't post it here, but will put it up on YouTube. I think we do a pretty good job at with that "sound" on our cover.

This is indeed...
A treasure! I recently got back into contact with Vince. He sent me some CDs with a lot of our old songs from the late sixties and early seventies. That has awakened a lot of memories for me.
Thanks, Stan!

old as the hills...
and twice as dusty! Glad you enjoyed this oldie jam. That has always been one of my favorite things to do - get together with some musicians and have an improv session. Cheers.

Echoes indeed...
The guitarist from my old band sent me a bunch of old recorders. I'm in the process of strolling down the memory land of my mind.... Thanks for noticing, Andrew. ;-)

This is the third 'oldie' of yours I've heard tonight (the other two being the forum posts, "Sam and Dave cover..." and "A Brand New Bag"), and I have to say the overwhelming vibe I get from them all is fine, fun and positive. I'd LOVE to have been there!
Please post more as you are able, dear.

Love,

MoM

Thank you....
very much, MoM! Nice to have your enthusiastic approval of these old tunes. It was a fun time. Glad you can enjoy them. By the way, I posted two more videos (I Wish It Would Rain and Cold Sweat) on the Sam and Dave forum thread.

Hope all is good out your way.

PP III, slow start
You're right, as we went along we all started getting into sync, kind of working off each other's groove. Vince recorded a lot of stuff in those day, hauling his reel to reel here and there. Thanks for giving this a listen!
