Description
I'm on a bit of a nautical theme at the moment.

Not my standard acoustic fare. Jazz/Blues really but there isn't a genre called that... go figure.

All comments/suggestions welcome.

Probably should have waited until tomorrow morning to post and re-listen, but what the hell!

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
Fifty Fathoms Deep - Peter Bowen (March 2013)

The moment that you stepped aboard
I caught your glance and my spirits soared
Your smile a beacon in the night

Graceful lines sashayed slowly by
Your trailing hand brushed against my thigh
My mind's in a spin, can't tell wrong from right

Your eyes, like azure pools, I took the leap
Now I'm drowning in a love fifty fathoms deep

Lead over two verses

Your eyes, like azure pools, I took the leap
Now I'm drowning in a love fifty fathoms deep

The signs were clear, they went ignored
My heart went flying overboard
Like a tonne of lead, I'm sinking way too fast

The light is fading up above
I'm suffocating in a sea of love
In way too deep, my breath can't last

Your eyes, like azure pools, I took the leap
Now I'm drowning in a love fifty fathoms deep

I'm down here trapped in your embrace
Mermaid charms with a killer face
Drowning in a love fifty fathoms deep
Drowning in your love fifty fathoms deep
I'm drowning in a love fifty fathoms deep.

50 fathoms
Well that is different! Good lyrics, very cool groove, nice drums and bass, tasty guitar and warm vocal. Excellent work, my friend!

Crying out...
Yes, it is a change in direction from my solo acoustic numbers. I did toy with posting it in that format but it was crying out for a more satisfying arrangement. Thanks for being first to drop by. Glad you thought it turned out OK. Talk soon, Peter.

Like the bass in this Peter. This production is very different for you ... nice mix ... very crystal clear and everything well placed. You've gone all the way out on this one! Cool double vocals on the chorus ... thought I heard an autotune FX at 2:46 on mermaid ... great song ... I have trouble with the whole blues jazz crossover thing ... I find when blues has jazzy elements, which it often does, it's still blues or visa versa. Great lyrics ... enjoyed Peter!
Cheers

Blues by any other name...
Thanks, Stan. Yes, this is a bigger production number than usual but in the end the song called out for it. I appreciate the comments re the mix. There is a touch of autotune on the lead vocal but I don't really hear it on "mermaid"? Perhaps I'm not really in tune with autotune :-) You are right, it is probably more blues than jazz. Take care my friend, Peter.

Nice changes! I little jazz, a touch of blues, a bit Latin! Nice bluesy solo. I dig the lead tone. Departure is a good thing.

Thanks, Andrew. Yes, I was looking for something a bit different in the chord progression and I think it worked out OK. Lounge music, perhaps? Take care, peter.

Good song! Recording sounds great. Really loving the atmospherics, especially the guitar. And you singing fits real nice. Everything flows seamlessly. Gotta say you now have the corner on the Jazz/Blues genre. Peter, great tune!

Crooner
Thanks for the very kind words, Jack. For better or worse, I've always liked the idea of being a crooner... pity :-) I appreciate you dropping by. Take care, Peter.

Has a 60s vibe
The Doors perhaps? I could here Jim Morrison singing this.

Very nicely done. Great instrumental work and production sounds good to me.

Cheers

I'm getting the band back together...
Jim Morrison. Interesting thought. Yes, it might work. I was thinking smooth crooner. Michael Buble, perhaps. Either way I wish I had Ray Manzarek on keys rather than my one note midi organ. Robby Krieger just might have got a better guitar solo down as well... :-) Thanks, Dick. Regards, Peter.

To dream...
Thank, Freddy. I've always thought that I could be the next great Frank Sinatra clone :-) Bit hard with a solo acoustic guitar... It would be a great experience to sing with a band with double bass, organ and a horn section., etc. I appreciate you dropping by. Take care, my friend. Peter.

I certainly did have that smooth jazz, crooner type feel in mind when I wrote the song. More than happy for the M T to pick it up and pay me some royalties :-) Thanks for stopping by. Kind regards, Peter.

Up to par
In every way, this is up to par with everything you write and perform: the composition is solid;lyrics tell a satisfying romantic story; the vocals sure and very pleasant to listen to; your guitar work top drawer. The bass is a bit heavy to my ears, but that might just be me. I like this piece a lot. You sing it smoothly and it draws me in without torturing my eardrums. Lovely.

I like this! I really dig that chord progression in the verses. All the instrumentation is perfectly blended into this work, including your vocals, which sound great. Cool hook too - "I'm drowning in your love" Enjoyable listen - thanks!

Just fell out...
Thanks, Sig. I was looking for a chord progression a bit different to what I normally tend to produce and this one just seemed to fall out of the guitar. This year's family/friends CD is going to have a nautical theme so I had to find lyrics that had a bit of salt air in them. Glad you thought it turned out OK. Regards, Peter.

Real cool stuff sir
I can imagine Michael Buble singing this or if you want to go way back it kind of reminds me of the Stray Cats. You did a wonderful job with this yourself though. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it from the lyrics to the way you presented it . Faved it . Well done!

Cool song.

Should you second vocal have been panned a bit out of the way or processed differently? After that "in the night" it's almost like the main voice continues the oo-hoo-hoo's.

Thanks
Thanks for the listen and suggestions, Vic. I did EQ and verb the oohs a bit differently but I agree with you, they needed more differentiation. I also panned them equally out either side but they ended up sounding centered, anyway. I will go back and tweak them. What I really needed was some female backing singers but I couldn't coax any to my house at 11.30 pm :-) Take care, Peter.
