To The Stars (with Rok41)

Description
I wanted to get a clean folkie style riff running through this, and that's what you hear pushed a little to the left in this one. It's done in an open G tuning, with a capo on the 3rd fret. The sound is filled out with a second guitar with standard tuning. Then there was the bass. I was after a line that weaved its way through and around the guitar and the melody. Who better to supply it than Chris Flynn (Rok41)? As always, he came through with exactly what I had hoped for, and his mix (with a few little tweaks) is the one I have used, too. I have warned Chris that if he keeps playing this sort of material, he may feel a great desire to buy a double bass, grow a goatee beard, wear a pork pie hat and a satin waistcoat, then start to close his eyes and shake his head from side to side in time with the notes when he's playing. When that happens, his transformation from rock to folk will be complete!

The song finishes with a guitar solo played on a Gibson Howard Roberts.

The artwork is plucked from a Google search.

I hope you enjoy listening!

Lyrics
To the stars

If the sun were shining I would take you to the mountains
And send some pebbles skimming ’cross the creek
We could take a picnic and sit underneath a tree
And make such simple pleasures seem unique

If I had a jet plane and a pilot of my own
I would fly you all around the world
Stopping in big cities, stay a week or two
Where I could buy you diamonds, buy you pearls

If I were a spaceman I would take you to the stars
We could watch them brighten up the sky
And see the earth below us slowly turn around
See the lights of New York and Shanghai

But all we have is what we’ve got
And that’s enough for me
You are the morning sunshine
You are sleek jet plane
And only you can take me to the stars

Great song! You have a knack for writing beautiful melodies that perfectly suit your vocal style. Those guitar parts are wonderful (magical may be a better word). What a wonderful tone! Clean and articulate with a wonderful chiming quality allowing each note in your parts to ring out clearly. Of course Chris sounds great. A bass tone perfect for the song and lines that weave through the changes without distracting from the main melody.

One of your best!

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the positive feedback, Andrew. I must admit I do like the sound of the Maton, and I'm using the silk and steel strings which give it some extra warmth, too. Yes, Chris will never let you down on the bass - I love his work!

You managed to create a beautiful song in-between your world tour ...
Your guitars are magical ... that gibson H is exquisite! This is your style of music and I agree with Andrew ... one of your best. Chris's bass is understated but in a good way ... nicely played and a good mix.
Cheers

Hi Stan
Not exactly a world tour - just to Port Fairy last week, which is about 4 hours from Melbourne :-) Yes, I like the tone of the HR for this sort of music - I played it fingerstyle, too, which makes it even warmer, I think. Chris has a great ability to know what complements the other things that are going on in a song. Thanks for your comment, Stan - much appreciated!

Thanks for the comment, Feter. THe Howard Roberts is about the size of a Gibson ES 175, but has a round hole rather than ƒ holes and, on the model I have (which came out in about 1974) only one pickup. My avatar is a photoshopped picture of that guitar, which you can see more clearly here (http://altomusic.com/shop/Used197475VintageGibsonHowardRobertsWineRed_pid103061.am ). Nice bridge-end
Beautiful balance in the mix. Reminds me of a lot of Gordon Lightfoot tracks from way back. And very clever technique - after three verses I was so hungry for a bridge and then you stick it on at end. Nice trick to make one go back and start all over again.

Gentle and peaceful...
Guitar playing is just so absolutely pleasant, Philip. Love it. The sentiment of the lyrics, too, is filled with sort of a "gentle awe" and I think your words are simply lovely. I especially like the line, "You are the morning sunshine
You are sleek jet plane
And only you can take me to the stars." This is a wonderful little song that is so very pleasant to listen to.

Very nice Philip
I'm sure I listened to this and commented (and faved) this when it was posted, but apparently not :(
A really beautiful piece - love the guitars in particular. Vocal works really well, and Chris' bass track is delicate and accurate, in sympathy with the roll of the tune.
I'm wondering if there's a way in your studio to mask the breathing on the guitar tracks? Its only a very small thing, but might be wort considering to raise the already high bar even further.
Great post!
Cheers from up north.

Super
guitar playing. Great opening. Nice build on the second verse. The dissonances of the guitar tunings are interesting and do not remove from the work. Bass is terrific and as always I love it when two instruments go into unison as the bass and 'lead' guitar do. Mix is great. Thanks!

Very pretty guitar work. Is the bass a regular bass? It feels a bit like a semi-acoustic, especially in those upward runs. It blends very well with the acoustic guitars.

I used my Fender P-Bass on this song, complete with 2yr old strings on it :)..... I love the organic sound of the P-bass when the round wound strings have lost their life (not a fan of flats)...gives a real warmth to the low-mids. While I do play an acoustic bass from time to time, I never record with it. Thanks again for the kind words. Rok

Enjoyable is the right word!
An inherent warmth in the songwriting and performance that transports you instantly to a nice place. The guitars sound wonderful, the bass is soft and saturates mix without overpowering.

Your vocal performance is poised and engaging. The higher frequencies in the vocal track sounded a bit too accentuated for my ear, but that's a technical detail.

I can only agree with all the nice comments. Wonderful song from beginning to end.
