Description
"Under Your Bed", the next song from our Sigmund's Strangedream project, was co-written by Natalie and myself over a year ago. Natalie wrote the lyrics, complained that the music I composed was too hard to sing to, and then proceeded to give me vocal tracks for this song which I happen to think are the very best she has done to date (yes, I say that every time!). What a surprise!

I doubt many of you would be surprised that I asked Chris Flynn (rok41) to contribute his bass talents to this piece. In fact, Chris is a permanent member of the SSD project now, and I couldn't be more excited. I thoroughly enjoy working with Chris, and I know that before I even hear his parts that what he puts into every project we do is going to be his absolute best effort. Be sure to notice his fretless bass work on the verses, and tell me you can't FEEL those low notes on the choruses! Thank you, my friend!

I feel particularly excited to have Steve Ritter on the drums for this project. I have been priviledged to work with Steve on a number of projects through Chris, and was thrilled when Chris sent him this song and he agreed to add his percussive talents to it. Then I heard his tracks - WOW! Together, Steve and Chris provide the ultimate rhythm section!

Our work has often been compared to the band Evanescence, so I decided as I mixed and mastered I would use their song "Bring Me to Life" as a reference track, paying attention in particular to how the guitar, bass and drums meshed together in the choruses. While I certainly was not trying to imitate their sound, I wanted to create as impressive a wall of sound as they did -

Did I attain my goal? That is where your invaluable feedback comes in. So have a listen, and let us know what you think. And thank you Nat, Chris and Steve - you guys did such an awesome job - it is a total pleasure working with all of you!

Thank you for stopping by and listening - we all really appreciate it! If you have a moment, we would also love it if you stopped by our facebook page here, and yes - LIKE us!!!

Lyrics
Lately I been thinking to myself
What do I have to do to make you
All mine, all night, and would I
Should I be concerned that I feel dead inside
When you're too far away; stay -
Tell me that you will because I'm
Tired of asking god if this is real
I need you now I have to make you understand

Chorus
Find me I'll be under your bed
Held captive by everything you say
Lover, slower - let's not say what it is
But let it live, let it live

I'll be fine - this heart will mend in time
Tell me that you feel the same
For me and that you're not afraid
To take me as I am - tell me how you feel
Because I'm tired of asking god if this is real
I need you now - I have to make you understand

Chorus

Can I trust?
Or do I dream too much?
I'm awake
I'm in pain
Pray no more rain
I'm, I'm at your window
Take my hand
Touch me
Cause all I can think of is you

Solo
Final Chorus

What a welcome.
I've hardly been able to come here lately, so what a treat to come online for a few minutes and get some more of your music for my collection. Hell of a song, heck of a performance both in vocals and that guitar hell, it's expressive as anything I've heard. Nice to hear a guitar played so well but not taking over a song at the wrong time too.

I hate fade-outs, but I know a lot of people don't mind them, so this is something you have to decide for yourself. Top me they are for people who couldn't be bothered to write a proper ending. Take that and ignore it or use it as motivation, whatever you like, I know that stuff is personal. Still a great piece, fade-out or not.

Hello there FA
With little time one has to be selective with how they use it, which makes your stop by even more appreciated. And thanks for the nice comment about the guitar - I'd much rather leave you longing for more, as opposed to looking at your watch, wondering when it will end.

At the risk of sounding philosophical, I think a fade out can be as much an artistic expression as other parts of a song. I always found it interesting how the sound of the song changes as it fades away. Instruments you hardly paid attention to in the song suddenly pop out at you as the song fades. A fade out is not always the best choice to end a song, but I consider it a viable option, and if I use it in my song it is by design.

Or maybe I just couldn't come up with a better ending LOL

Thanks again for stopping by - everyone in this virtual band truly appreciates your time and continued support here!

Great
I wish i could take this apart and put it back together in the way that made it my taste. It has everything in the world going for it. Great all over but it just seems to miss a tiny opportunity with the hook. I feel like her vocal is spot on in the top of the chorus but never hits that spot enough.

That being said, great song. I am jealous of every last bit.

What a band! And this big production number lets you all loose. Nat did a fantastic job coming up with some fine lyrics and a sophisticated melody, and then singing the house down. The fragile quality of the quieter sections and the power in the choruses is pure class. The rhythm section is spot on as you say, Sig, and the guitar work and the arrangement is pro quality. I don't do Facebook but I LIKE! The outro solo is a classic. Back to the drawing board for most of us... Much kudo to all. Kind regards, Peter.

Big sound in the backing - sort of wall of sound but I can hear the components. Natalie's voice sits on top and is the focal point and what a voice it is - powerful, yet gentle; it has emotion and warmth. And that guitar solo near the end - what a player you are, Sig. Chris and Steve just make it all so professional. Thanks for the download - much appreciated! I'll head over to your Facebook page now...

When I see a post from you, which is not very often, I know it's going to be good. You have set a standard here for quality in all areas from writing, performance and production. This is no exception ... everything about this is excellent. My only thing to comment on is the chorus and I know Gaylen mentioned it and I don't know if this is what he was getting at, but I felt the vocals could of punched more dynamically in that part ... but a small thing and subjective because her vocals are wonderful overall. Great playing Sig,Chris and Stever!
I would love to pick your brain one day about how you go about mixing ... deep respects...

Hey there Stan
So glad you stopped by for a listen. And what a great comment to leave - everyone in this band really appreciates your support here so much!

I completely understand what you are referring to with the vocals in the chorus, and it is probaby because of this: There are two schools of thought when mixing vox - out in front (or on top), or placed into the mix. I prefer to do the latter; to me I just find it to be a more balanced approach. It does create some challenges however, in keeping the vocal clear, especially in choruses like this where there is a lot going on. So your feedback is most valuable to me - tells me I still got some work to do, as well as where I need to concentrate my future efforts!

If you want to chat more, send me a pm - I would be happy to share my methodology with you some time. Thanks again for your time - to listen and for leaving such a thoughtful comment!

Well
you know what I have under my bed? A camp bed.. lol. This sure beats that..but I digress.. awesome on all fronts: Evanescence ilk for sure.. rhythm guitars perhaps a touch too cautiously back seat for "that sound" .. but it sure lets Natalie's vocal talents shine through. The mixing between "light" & "shade" is extremely well done herein. Super tight rhythm section, tidy solo. Magic.

Hi Alan
Thank you for stopping by our song page - the band really appreciates it! You're actually quite right about the guitars - and that is exactly why I set them a little further back - I didn't want them competing with Nat's gorgeous vox, which is the real spotlight in the choruses. Chris and Steve helped make this one heck of great collab effort as well - I feel quite blessed to be able to play with such talented folks.

Powerful
Natalie's voice is just stunning and you guys have given her an amazingly rich bed to play with. You'd never know she found this difficult at the beginning and she clearly found her way through, beautifully.

I really dug the wall of sound and the energy the dynamics gave the song. I also really dug the fade and think it suits this style of music. The only tweak I might make if it were me is to play with the opening piano sound. It could sound more realistic perhaps, but that's a taste thing. Overall, you guys obviously killed it. - Lisa

Instrumental Intro...
...and the accompaniment that follows is just so compelling. Drew me in from the first measure. While I like the vocal line a lot (don't get me wrong), what keeps me the most interested is how you orchestrated this powerful song. Quite a wonderful production over all. That bass is killer (do they still use that word?) and you have brought the vocal plenty out front of all that power. I did have a bit of trouble understanding the lyrics and am glad there was a text provided. May have something to do with all of the "activity" going on behind it. This is strong collaboration which shows off the talents of all involved. Bravo to all of you for such solid and powerful work.

Evanescence
Target acquired and hit squarely! Natalie has a fuller, more intimate, syrupy voice than the young lady in that band, but the proper power and growl is there too. This is really superlative work. I adore your guitar work, and Chris' fretless stuff is perfectly interpreted and applied. Everyone was just great. Man. Just fantastic.

Intro build is epic which opens into an intimate space for Natalie's pristine vocal. Evanescence - I get it totally. Chris' fretless bass work throughout (especially at 1:50 is perfect for that brief interval to shine through), and the drums are killer Steve - every hit is there for a reason, every sound counts. Love the use of strings Sig - the master producer's touch. And your solo work tears up the soundstage. The mix focuses well on Natalie and really lets her wonderful range to come across with all the emotion of a tormented lover.

You guys are no less than top drawer pro, and I know I've said that before but you keep putting out this kind of brilliant work and so you've left me no choice but to sound like a parrot and say it again. Brawwk, say it again.

epic come to mind with the opening. i can hear the Evanescence comparison. so full of emotion.. I think you did a fine job with the mix. drums fall right into place. the vocal spikes a bit hear and there in the quiet parts, but sores in the chorus.. nice.in it to win it i might add!

What does one add to a song that has a million comments?
Listening, a couple times, and i wished the piano tones were more powerful for such a significant hook.... But this is minor at best.
Personally, i would have jacked the guitars up in the chorus to a level that would have competed with the vocals and forced Natalie to really push the song.
All in all, a very nice effort. I dig the Evenescence comparisons, but, you all have found your own voice with the songs you have created together.
I wish you all nothing but great success! Will you, or have you takenthis out to the people, in a live setting? I think with the right player, it would go over well... Nothing beats the stage- any stage!!

Not sure how I missed this. So sorry! Once again you show that the big labels should have you signed. This is far better than just about anything gracing the radio waves today.

Really amazing! Could see this used on The Voice... What a great tune! Nicely done!
