Description
Another song from the nautical locker.

Solo singer songwriter again. Single take recording two tracks playing and singing at the same time. I can't chew gum as well though :-). No edits, click track or autotune. A bit of EQing and 'verb.

Vocals via a Shure SM58. My self made 000 acoustic guitar via a direct line into my Presonus audio interface from a recently purchased LR Baggs Lyric pickup that I fitted to it (worth chasing up!). No mike. I doesn't sound too bad by itself (IMHO) but I will probably end up miking it as well. G7th capo, IV fret.

See what you think.

All comments/suggestions welcome.

Peter :-)

Lyrics
Adrift On The Tide - Peter Bowen (March 2013) CAPO IV

[Amaj7] [Dmaj7] [Amaj7] [Dmaj7] [Amaj7] [Dmaj7] [Amaj7] [Amaj7]

[Amaj7] Adrift on the [Dmaj7] tide
[Amaj7] Along for the [Dmaj7] ride
[Bm7] I ain't [E7] going nowhere
[Bm7] But I don't [E] care

[Amaj7] Just shooting the [Dmaj7] breeze
[Dmaj7] I do as I [Dmaj7] please
[Bm7] Wherever the [E7] wind gods take me
[Bm7] I'll get there with [E] ease

Chorus
[C#m7] As long as the [F#m7] sun is shining, [Bm7] I'll keep playing my [E7] part
[C#m7] The rumors aren't [F#m7] true that I'm just [Bm7] protecting my [E7] heart

[Amaj7] [Dmaj7] [Amaj7] [Dmaj7]

Bridge
[A7sus] It's true, I once [A] ran aground when I [C#7] heard a siren [F#m] call
[Bm7] Past memories, that's [E7] all

[Amaj7] I'm chasing the [Dmaj7] sun
[Amaj7] Having some [Dmaj7] fun
[Bm7] And if I get [E7] burnt sometimes, well
[Bm7] I'll weigh anchor and [E] run

[C#m7] As long as the [F#m7] sun is shining, [Bm7] I'll keep playing my [E7] part
[C#m7] The rumors aren't [F#m7] true that I'm just [Bm7] protecting my [E7] heart

Outro
[Amaj7] Adrift on the [Dmaj7] tide, along for the [Dmaj7] ride
[Amaj7] Shooting the [Dmaj7] breeze, I do as I [Dmaj7] please
[Amaj7] Chasing the [Dmaj7] sun, having some [Dmaj7] fun
[Amaj7] Playing my [Dmaj7] part, [Amaj7] just don't mention my [Amaj7] heart...

Adrift on the tide
Love that intro! Good song - sort of a mix between James Taylor and Loggins & Messina. The simple "man and guitar" format works well here, too - gives it an introspective, reflective feel. The guitar is sounding good. Well played and sung - excellent work, my friend!

I'll ring the boys...
I guess James, Kenny and Jim might just be up to scratch for some backing vocals on this one :-) The pickup works fairly well as a sole recording source but I think it would be better with a mic as well. Next time... Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it. Talk soon, Peter.

Adrift On The Tide
That intro riff really grabbed me. Lovely changes and lyrics. Great performance. I was surprised to read that guitar was recorded with a pickup. I may have to check one of those out.

Pickup
Hi Andrew. Just trying out another song to see if it might work as a solo performance, coffee house number. Thanks for your support. The LR Baggs Lyric pickup is a microphone style device that has only been out for a little while. I was looking for something not too intrusive for my 000. The Lyric was getting good reviews, so I decided to try one. It sounds a far bit better than the Fishman Acoustic Matrix under saddle pickup in my Maton dreadnaught through my acoustic amp. And, as you can hear in this post it does open up direct recording possibilities but I think I will mic it up as well. Take care, Peter.

Simplicity
in arrangement is always pleasant because there's nothing to get in the way of the raw elements of a song. In this case, though, I am feeling a crying need for some strings to enter by the second verse and then to grow with a horn and/or more robust guitar work as you get into the chorus. Just seems to need...more...to support the lyrics. And micing your vocal would be good, too. Throw in a dash of reverb, a bass, and...

As always, I appreciate your input.
Hi Paul. Thanks for your considered comments. I agree that the song would benefit from a bigger arrangement. In this case, I suppose I was using this MJ post as a sounding board for how the song came across as solo, coffee house number. I will definitely take your thoughts into consideration and try to up the ante with the guitar work and the vocal a bit whilst still using the solo singer/guitarist format. Take care, Peter.

Lovely song...
...and I deeply enjoyed your performance of it Peter; you are such a great talent! Thank you for sharing this...I recently started a big reef aquarium in my new home here in Alabama; I've wanted one for many years and so a nautical motif was just perfect right now. Hope you're doing well and keep up the always splendid and special work you give us! Michael

Really nice tune...
Pter, you gotten your groove in these vox/guitar/nautical songs. This balmy breeze is very enjoyable. Thanks.

Balmy breeze (now there's an idea for a song...)
Thanks, Jack. I may run out of nautical cliches before I have enough songs for an album :-) Take care, Peter.

Mind matters...
I appreciate your listen and comments, Vic. I don't know if the left brain is responsible for singing, and the right brain for playing, or vice versa, or at all... I don't know much really :-) Take care. Thanks, Peter.

Great idea
Perhaps this is common practice, but this is the first time I've noticed someone interjecting the chords with the lyrics as you have here. What a simple and great idea. I could play along on the piano so easily with a printout of the lyrics in front of me.

Oh - and really did enjoy the song too : )

Thanks
Thanks for dropping by Craig. I tend to include the chords on most of my songs (unless I don't really know what I was playing :-)). Some others do. Most probably don't. I'm happy if someone feels the urge to play along as well. It must mean I have achieved something... Glad you liked the song. Take care, Peter.

Stuck a chord...
Hi Alannah. Thanks for dropping by the beach house. 70's 'R Us is my franchise. America used a lot of major seventh's in their music that's probably why this song struck a chord (sic) with you :-) Take care, Peter.

Adrift On The Tide
Nice opening guitar and a real enjoyable play throughout Peter. Keep chasing that sun ... it's refreshing to hear just acoustic and vocals and to not fall into the trap of all the ear candy so easily accessible to us all ... I am so guilty of over producing...
Cheers

Chasing the sun
Thanks, Stan. Just trying to write some songs that will stand on their own played in a solo setting, as this is much more likely than me ever playing them in an arrangement with strings, keys, etc.. I also don't really have the skills, or the patience, to work them into big arrangements, either. I don't consider that you are over producing, though. You are a highly skilled, multi-instrumentalist and showcase that time and time again. Take care, my friend, Peter.

Great stuff
This is the kind of music I like to listen to. And with your picking and your voice you really don't need any more than this. I'd forgotten how much I used to listen to James Taylor way back when. Good recording as well. A favorite.
