Never To Grow Old

Description
A nostalgic vox/ukulele tune after a day of writing and recording. All tracks were recorded on iPad GarageBand app. Mixed in Audacity and GarageBand on MacBook 2.4. Bass, drums, and strings via the software instruments on the GB app. With my vocal I used the "Telephone" effect to simulate a bit of "vintage" feel... and also to hide the effects of a cold I'm dealing with. Properly speaking, this is a demo... ;-)

Lyrics
What were we doing
Back in the day
The dawn of our own time

Riddles we spun
Weaving our dreams
Never to grow old

What were we thinking
We sang our songs
Were we just winking
It's taking so long…

Where were we going
Hoping to claim
The promise of our day

A dream is a cloud
Reshapes in the sky
Never to grow old

The days were sunny
The nights were cool
A taste of honey
Was I just a fool?

Where are we now
Close to the end
The edge of our own time

Wiser perhaps (I pray)
Reality rains (reigns)
Never to grow old.

Never to grow old
Warm vocal, nostalgic lyrics, the uke sounds good, the backing fills things out. Entertaining photo. Good one, Jack!

Because who wants...
... to grow old, right? Thanks, Philip. This started yesterday when laying in bed with a bad back I pulled out the uke... only instrument small enough to be comfortable laying down. A little strumming here and there and I realized I had my next day's schedule set.

Cheers...

For some unknown reason...
Everytime I click on this song page using my iPad the "plays" increase a whole bunch. There is some bug in either the iPad or MJ's software that needs adjusting!

A while back iPads were playing my songs twice. I think it's something to do with the iPad - but someone who knows more than I do will need to investigate...

vintage
sweet tune jack. harkens back in style to the 20' or 30's. the uke really fits the bill for this nicely.

Harkening...
It's what I do. I think. If you ended up in the 20's or 30's then I guess that means the song succeeded. Thanks, Vicar.

Great minds.....
I was thinking along these lines just this morning!
Gentle and sweet, but no easy sentimentality, either; a fine line to walk.
I'm very much looking forward to the 'official' version!

Love,

You have achieved the "vintage" vibe very nicely, Jack. Gentle and retrospective. The uke sounds just right. I have the same problem re multiple plays when I occasionally listen on my iPad (3), too. Sometimes I don't realise until it is around for the third time - talk about growing old... :-) Thanks, Peter.

Another thing... For some reason the player won't work on my iPad 3. Is there something funky about the third gen? Does your iPad 3 show the player? Thanks, for chiming in...

A few songs won't play at all. Others, if I tap in the area underneath the graphic where the player should be, it just shows up and loads OK. It is annoyingly flakey, though. I don't use it for listening on MJ unless I have no other option. Peter

Lovely tune , I know where you want to go with this song for a vintage tone , i d use upright bass or Uke Bass tone and accordion instead of strings , I like the Uke tone with your vocal .. nice one my friend thanks a lot for sharing !!

You're right...
An upright bass sounds better. I just tried it. So, do you play accordion? Thanks, Feter. Always good to get your input. Take care, my friend.

As you know
I always like a bit of nostalgia jack and this is nostalgia down to the bone.... lovely tune and nice lyrics and with that telephone sound on the vocal, it really worked well with the sepia photo.... I'm not sure that was a mandolin you were plucking; maybe it was just someone's heart strings..... enjoyed, regards M LOL

It comes very natural to us old guys, eh? You're one of the best, so having you like this tug-of-the-heartstrings is a fine endorsement. The photo is a card my wife bought me a few years ago for Valentine's day. Thanks!

Yeah, I think the "telephone" effect worked. As for the iPad mic, I did have to clean it up a bit in Audacity. Still, it ain't too shabby for a pinhole mic! Thanks!

I think the telephone effect is a particularly good choice given the subject of the lyrics. Nice melody and well sung (cold and all). The sparse arrangement is very effective. Nice ukulele playing!

I need to pull it out more often. Funny how a melody comes about. Seems like the uke and chords paved the way. Kinda just flowed out of the picking and strumming. Thanks, Andrew. Glad to know you enjoyed this.

Sweet Music
Nicely arranged song with the uke and soft strings in the background. I also like the Telephone plug-in you used for the vocal. A nice touch.

I also like the chords in the chorus. Refreshes the arrangement and the song. Very nicely done.

many more dreams and songs...
Rich, I thought of you (and me) when I was making this song. It's basically the idea how everyone makes adjustments to theirs dreams as they live life... either sometimes being forced to because reality "rains" (circumstances) in on us quashing the earlier dream or, as we get older, how sometimes we more volitionally adjust the dream as reality "reigns" (i.e growing maturity, wisdom) in us. We never stop the need to be learning this thing called life.

Thanks for stopping in!

Indeed!
In the golden years, a man sometimes want to reprove virility of body and mind by doing something stupendous like singing in the rain for 4-1/2 hours, or running a marathon or composing a magnum opus. And sometimes the blood courses strong again – and the task is attained! More often, the older (perhaps wiser) man pulls up short, simply satisfied with a short burst of inspiration and energy. Instead of doing, the older man may turn to teaching, imparting to youth the values held dear – telling of the world and heaven views that have him brought true contentment and peace. Our songs are a vehicle for telling.

Nice retro feel
I would never have dreamed of using that "telephone" voice effect, but it works beautifully here. Overall you really hit that vintage sound so well. I should be listening to this on an old radio with one of those gigantic vibrating speakers and not on these tiny desktop things.

Enjoyed this outing. The arrangement is traditional. The place where the lyric is coming from... that's the thing. Traditional reflection, if that makes sense, in a folkies clothes. Always a pleasure to listen in here.

Old school
Love the uke. Your vocals have an old school AM radio feel, a scratched yet true memory. I like the short phrases, gives it a classic feel. If you plan on reworking anything, consider using slightly different fingerings to create chords with differing positions on the fretboard and make the bass slightly less square. But it is quaint and sweet as is. Thanks for sharing this.
