Description
Another solo, nautical inspired post. This time an instrumental.

On my previous MJ post, Adrift On The Tide, the guitar was recorded using the direct output of an L.R. Baggs "Lyric" pickup that I installed in my self-made 000 acoustic guitar.

Whilst the recording was better and more natural sounding than any under saddle pickup I have used previously, it still wasn't quite what I was looking for, so on this fingerstyle instrumental I have blended in a small diaphragm condenser mic as well to see what I can achieve.

Lyric on the left channel, AKG Perception 170 condenser on the right (about six inches off the 12th fret angled towards the sound hole).

There are a few string squeaks and body noises, the guitar is very resonant, but that's what it sounds like single take, direct to record...

The piece is in D major (but the second bridge drifts into D minor..) at 114 bpm if anyone feels the urge to add an arrangement. Please be my guest.

Regards,

Peter :-)

Thanks Peter
Part of my stress at the moment is the removal of a major "lesion" on the back of my left hand. Not malignant luckily, but a big gash that makes Seagulling a little painful at the moment. All good though - it's slowly improving and I should be back to playing in a week or two. Cheers, N

Beautiful. Outstanding tone to the guitar - crisp yet full. I think you've been getting excellent sounds from acoustic guitars for some time now, but it's hard to imagine what would sound better than this. As for the music itself, a gently flowing piece that is very satisfying! Excellent in all respects!

Channeling JT
Thanks for the very supportive comments, Philip. I came up with the song structure yesterday morning at 5 am, channeling some JT chord progressions. I am quite happy with how it has turned out. Still a bit of EQ tweaking required but it is pretty close to how I would like it be. When I get a moment I will put the chords up. Talk soon, Peter.

I like the fact you can hear the guitar itself. The squeaks and noises give this a beautifully natural feel.

Sorry I'm late on this Peter ... this is a beautiful song and the guitar has a wonderful bright yet warm tone. The squeaks and noises are all part of that wonderful acoustic sound and gives the tune that "i'm in the room listening to you play" feel ... lovely progressions. Well done.

Pete,
Never apologize for the very natural and wonderful sounds that are an effect of the acoustic process. This is a crisp and pleasant recording and the piece and performance are top notch. Like the sound of the Maton and I think you captured a lot of character with this miking technique.
