Description
Dick Langford and Richard Marris asked me if I’d like to do a vocal track for a remake of this song they posted a while back. I was impressed with Muddy Fields, but didn’t know if I could improve on it. We tried it in the original key of A, and it was a struggle, but Dick suggested I raise it a step, and it was a little easier to sing. Hopefully, it’s as much a joy to listen to as it is to sing now. I think it’s a great song, and I’m very grateful they let me sing it. There’s some fine musicianship on this and superb songwriting. Richard told me how he was inspired to write this, and this is what he said:

“Easter 1998 found my wife and I driving from Memphis to New Orleans. We pulled over into a rest area by the Mississippi and I was suddenly overwhelmed by the size and emptiness. I didn’t actually have a guitar in the back but if I had I swear that place would’ve scared those chords in my hands.”

I did my basic training at Ft Polk, Louisiana, and I remember the place for it’s chickory coffee and spectacular sunsets, (and tear gas.) I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did singing it. Thanks again Dick and Richard.

Dick Langford: Bass, electric guitar, mixing & arrangement.
Richard Marris: Songwriting, electric & acoustic guitars.
Terry Pearson: All vocals.

Lyrics
Muddy Fields
(R. Marris )

Driving Down Louisiana
Felt fear creeping up on my shoulder
Look around and find
There's only me here
Between the muddy fields and sky

If God's looking down on me how's he gonna find me?
If God's looking down on me how's he gonna find me?
If God's looking down on me how's he gonna find me?
Here, between the muddy fields and sky

Coal black road and one silo
Flood water all around
Please don't find me alone tonight and cold
Between these muddy fields and sky

If God's....

Pulled my car to the side of the road
Got my guitar out of the back
I swear this place just scared these chords in my hand
Between the muddy fields and sky

The sky looked down on me
This is what it told me
The fields surrounded me
This is what they told me
The sky looked down on me
This is where it found me
Here, between the muddy fields and sky
(©R. Marris )

Thanks for stopping by, Andrew.
That chorus is where I ran into trouble. My mouth just doesn't want to move that fast. I finally resorted to slowing it down a bit to record the harmonies, and then restored it in the final. I'm glad you liked the vocals. It was a challenge at times, but I definitely enjoyed singing it. Peace. T

What a great track!
Terry, I liked the original, but this has really gained an enormous amount of authenticity with your amazing vocal. Great song, and a brilliant backing and production, but the vocals make this version for sure.

Yeah, I was sold on that first version, and really wanted to take a shot at it myself. We had to bring the key up a notch, but Dick was generous with the adjustments. It was great getting to record with them. Glad you liked it. T

You really lifted this track and I'm so pleased you agreed to try it :-)

It was always a favourite of mine but we never got the vocals right.

Richard played acoustic and electric guitar on this btw. I also played electric and bass and arranged and mixed.

Thanks again Terry!

Wow .. if anything can fill up those expansive Louisiana fields and that big empty sky .. it's this soundtrack!

I missed the original version. I will now have to search it out. I have long been impressed with the songs of those two Brits .. and this one is right up there with their best stuff.

Of course, hailing from Oklahoma, Terry, you are no stranger to vast skyscapes. Your voice fills the void with a great expressiveness. I especially like the way you slightly extend the word "here" beginning each last line in the chorus - it really grounds the piece in the present moment and brings out the overwhelming, existential immensity of the experience.

My only critical comment is that I think it ends a little bit abruptly with the rapid, quiet fade. It's a big song - it needs a big ending. I can see the instruments extending it out more .. especially that dark bass .. in a long, slow, monumental fade ...

Yes, there are definitely some nice tunes coming from these two, and I'll probably be begging for another one soon. I'm just getting a slow drip from my own reservoir right now, and appreciate the work. Funny you should mention that intonation on the word "here." I did numerous takes on this, but for some reason, I did this differently on the final take. I wasn't aware of it till I listened back, and considered redoing it as before. I'm glad it worked. We all thank you for the comments. Peace. T

Interesting what you say about the end. My own view was that it should just sort of fade away in hopelessness but I see there's an equal argument for giving it a big finish! It's a pity we can't post revised versions :-(

I really appreciate the listen and generous comments!

You are right, Terry, this is a very fine song, and you do a great job with the vocals and the articulation of the chorus lyrics. Fine arrangement and mix, Dick. Very evocative feel (with a hint of CSN in part?). Great song, Richard. The lyrics are first rate. Overall, a classic collaboration. Much enjoyed. Regards to all, Peter.

Great song; great collab
The story is a good one and the vocal delivery is just perfect for the subject matter. There is kind of a broad-stroke approach to the band in this mix, spreading out across the landscape just like the song itself does. The chorus is particularly powerful as the rhythm and intensity rise. Love the arrangement and guitar work (Dick), the vocals (Terry), and the song itself (Richard) which, of course, made all the rest possible in the first place. This is really a pleasant song to hear. Fine, fine collaboration. (But, gee...you didn't invite me to add orchestral flutes and oboes. What's up with that?!)

Good to see you here Paul!
Thanks, it was without doubt a broad stroke approach. Richard's lyrics and melody lent itself very well to an expansive soundscape and that what was I was trying to get.

Don't worry, I'm sure I'll have a song that needs orchestral flutes and oboes (and as you know, I am being serious)

Thanks Paul
