Description
It's been ages since I wrote something, and I've been sitting around with a barely useable left hand after an operation, so I started this using a selection of midi loops for guitar, bass, drums, percs and keys. As my hand got better and stronger, I replaced the loops with live tracks one by one and completely changed the feel of the song. Then the words came.

What's it about? Not completely sure - the words feel somehow right, and they touch on some issues I've been having lately, but they don't "tell a story" as such.

Just go with the groove.

Great to see so many people posting at MJ this week - had to join in!!!

Lyrics
News Is Gonna Break
©2013 Neil Porter

Something’s gonna happen
Some news is gonna break
Someone’s just about to give in
Sometimes you have to give in
Watching your reflection
Is keeping me awake

I’ve missed you like sleep
I need you like water
Bad news is gonna break

Going down the water
For a midnight swim
Taking notes and writing
About the state we’re in
Taking in the droplets
On your moonlight skin

I’ve missed you like sleep
I need you like water
Bad news is gonna break

Scanning the horizon
For some give and take
Someone’s just about to give in
Sometimes you have to give in
Seeing what you’re doing
I watch you hesitate

I’ve missed you like sleep
I need you like water
Bad news is gonna break

There’s no misunderstanding
There’s icing, not much cake
There’s rules you gotta follow
And there’s rules you oughta break
Nobody’s gonna notice
That you’re giving them a shake

I’ve missed you like sleep
I need you like water
Bad news is gonna break

Great track Neil
I love the lyrics and the mystery - has a feel between a Dylan tune and I shot the Sheriff. Very cool. That left hand sounds pretty good on the lead too. Glad you're doing better. I'm also encouraged by the flurry of activity here lately.

Groovy, dude ;-)
So good to hear a new tune from you, especially one that grooves like this. Everything sounds good here Neil: everything.
There have been more posts in the past week than there have been all year so far: obviously MacJams is dead, dead, dead. Too funny.
Hope your hand stays better so you can make some more deliciousness.

The Reggae works well
Glad your hand is coming back to you... didn't know you had surgery, hoping for a quick recovery. The guitar lead is outstanding vocals are strong as always. I like the lyrics, leaves some interpretation to the listener. Enjoyable listen.

Ahhh
Such a good feel!!!
As with many of your songs I can feel the sea breeze!
Makes me take a deep breath and feel:

"Ahhhhhhh"!

And when you sing things like "Going down the water, For a midnight swim" I feel not so little envy. Especially after a very long and cold winter here which is only slowly looing its grip.

On the other hand when you write about extreme weathers and bushfires I understand that life isn't all roses for you and yours.

Anyway, I dig this song a lot! It talks to me within.

Hope your hand will come well fast and steady!

cheers to you and yours on the upside-down side of the world

Nice one!
Always good to hear something new from you. This was a very nice surprise on a somewhat stressful Monday morning, but the groove has gotten me a little relaxed and I'm good to go.

Now I'm going to try to get inspired this week and maybe end my latest drought.

Thanks for sharing Neil!

Great stuff, Neil!
As I think I mentioned before, I really liked the lyrics and chorus on this. The music is top quality, as expected. You'd better insure those hands, and take good care of them. There are lots of folks out here with the jiguma addiction. Peace. T

Hot jams on the synth, or is it a synth. Well done. The process that you were forced to contrive because of your injury seems to work very well for you. I can see you utilizing it in the future.

Meanings
Who needs meaning .. when you've got a good groove going?

Sometimes the words/voice just become another instrument.

Besides .. in the same way you systematically replaced the loops with live performance .. you can always replace the words if something more meaningful comes along : )

i like the reggae groove and really enjoy when that organ kicks in with the touch of hand drums ... I'm a sucker for an organ sound. Nice feel to your lead ... I like the idea of putting a song together with loops then replacing them with the real instruments ... nice way to work the basics out. Your lyrics can be interpreted in many ways ... there is a sense of something breaking in the world right now but it could also be taken in a more personal way ... one thing for sure they fit quite nicely with the tune. A very refreshing post .... you must be thrilled to have your hand back. I've always thought musicians and artists should insure their hands...
Cheers

News Did Break
An amazing song, as usual from you, Neil and sadly quite prescient after today's events in Boston. I enjoy the reggae feel and the lyrics. I especially love the lines "Watching your reflection is keeping me awake." I'm glad your hand is improving, but if the injury pushes you in the direction of different things with such great results, it's not such a bad thing. ;)

this groove is great. Love it. But I must add - your cool lyrics! What imagery. Really nice words. I am digging this one, Neil. Not that I don't dig your other tunes. Just, this one reaches down, grabs a deep vibe and pulls it up into a song that reaches out and draws the listener in. Kudos from up-over.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
It really is nice to be back at MJ with a new song again - only my third for the year I think. The hand has continued to improve, and your response to "News Is Gonna Break" gives me a bit of renewed confidence to keep at it. Special thanks to John, Sigi and Vic, guitar soloists I admire a lot, for their comments on my guitar soloing - much appreciated!
Cheers from Oz,

Excellent mix Neil and a well put together song- lots of quality stuff in this- real big band sound with the B4? organ solos/guitar solos.. but for me the drums and bass in this (almost Strangler's-esque) made it for me... maybe the vocals are a little dry in comparison to the big verb on the reggae guitars.. I might have tried giving the vocals a smidge more verb.

Reggae blues?
I'm sorry, I think you can't really do reggae unless you're wearing dreadlocks....

That said, I really love this lopsided rhythm. The first half minute I wasn't really sure where the downbeat was, since that bass drum / bass guitar is laying down some seriously tricky rhythm.

Much enjoyed!

More or less becoming one of your trademarks....
....this off kilter reggae feel, isn't it?

I love the B3 sound...really changes up the vibe and adds something...you end up edging towards a Meters-ish kind of vibe, and it sets things up for the guitar solo really nicely.... I really like the phrasing on the solo(s), too...

On my headphones the bass is just about perfect. Tonewise, mix-wise, and in terms of playing... Some neat cymbal programming in the overall drum programming...

Neat lyrics, whatever they end up being about...

Hey Neil
This has a great kinda reggae feel, and i love the lyrics (missed you like sleep), but you know, I really love your voice - its got a great kinda raspy tone that reminds me of the Waterboys. The delivery here is so good - urgent yet controlled. Hope the hand is all recovered, great to hear a new track from you.
