Description
Stephen emailed me recently and suggested we work on a collaboration. I was more than happy to oblige.

I didn't really have a song that was ready for some of Stephen's fine guitar work, so I wrote this song in a morning with the minimalist style of J. J. Cale in mind (simple chords, repeated lines..). As I added the keys, etc. it probably drifted away from J.J. more towards an R&B number but I felt it was a probably a good sound bed to allow Stephen to strut his stuff. And, as you will hear, he did just that. It was a pleasure working with him.

Stephen said,
"I've not really got anything to add to the song notes other than to say how grateful I am for the opportunity to work with Peter, whose work I've admired since he arrived here at Macjams. I've been out of circulation for a while and he made my return really easy and hassle free....As well as giving me a great track to contribute to - I really enjoyed it!"

Stephen - Lead guitar
Peter - the other bits

Hope you enjoy!

Regards,

Peter

Lyrics
The Long Way - Peter Bowen (April 2013)

[C] [G] [C] [D][C][G] [Am]

[Am] We're taking the slow boat, don't [C] care much [G] where it [Am] goes
[Am] We're taking the slow boat, where we'll [C] end up [G] no one [Am] knows
[C] Beyond the horizon, [Am] over the sea
[C] Off to a new land, [Am] where we'll be free
[Am] We're taking the slow boat, [C] aboard just [G] you and [Am] me.

[C] [G] [C] [D][C][G] [Am]

We'll travel the hard road, the one that's seldom crossed
We'll travel the hard road, through the valley of the lost
Follow the dirt road, round the last bend
On up the mountain, right to the end
We'll travel the hard road, just me and my best friend

[C] [G] [C] [D][C][G] [Am]

Lead over entire verse

[C] [G] [C] [D][C][G] [Am]

We're taking the long way, though it has its ups and downs
We're taking the long way, because we're glory bound
'cross burning deserts, through virgin snow
And when we get there, that's then we'll know
We're taking the long way; it's the rightful way to go
We're taking the long way, the only way to go
We're taking the long way; it's the rightful way to go

[C] [G] [C] [G]
[C] [D][C][G] [Am]
[Am] [Am]

The Long Way
I like the funky rhythm - the bouncy bass and snappy drums and the chunky guitar. I like what you've done with the vocals, too - there's an energy there that pushes the song along. Stephen's guitar work is excellent - great tone and wailing lines. it all works for me!

Upbeat
Thanks, Philip. Yes, it ended up a bit more upbeat than what I originally thought it might when I was writing my J.J. homage. Next time... Glad you thought it turned out OK. Stephen dialled in some very nice tone and lines. Take care, Peter.

Nice guys! Peter, your voice sounds good ( sounds like a an autotune FX which is very cool) and Stephen your guitar sounds great ,,, nice sustain and tone. I agree with Freddy regarding the Stills feel.
Musical backing and percussion well done.

squeaky mouse
Thanks, Stan. That autotune like effect was the GB vocal transformer taking a doubled vocal track up 7 semitones on the third verse. I sounded like a squeaky mouse, but it blended in OK. Glad you like what Stephen and I were able to put together. Take care, Peter.

I'm probably full of
old rope, but I swear I can hear JJ in the music. Great collab guys: the sounds generally are excellent and the guitars, as they should, sing beautifully. Enjoyed muchly.
As I was playing this, my son walked by and asked if what he was hearing was from MacJams. He was impressed, a lot. Go Peter and Stephen!

Many a fine knot...
Old rope doesn't necessarily mean it's not serviceable :-) Yes, the song structure and minimalist chord progression is definitely out of the J.J. song book. Glad your son, and you, enjoyed what we came up with. Thanks, Peter.

By you both..... love the song ( in a morning?????) and your singing playing Peter.... doubled vocals sound great and with Stephens wailing bluesy guitar it sounds just Fab...... concertina was a good idea too...... enjoyed, regards M

I've been
looking at so many nasa mars images, that photo almost looks like that planet. It is funny how music and take on a special and individual meaning. "We'll travel the hard road just me and my best friend". I can see that as a theme for the two rovers on mars. I think one doesn't work any more. Thanks for letting me explore those universal meaning in the song and the cool guitar sounds! Enjoyed that singing too! Thanks Peter

Sounding good guys!
Love that "taking the long way" sound on the vocals - works really nicely. Listening on my iPad, so can't hear the bass - will listen again on the "big Mac" later. Interestingly, I don't appear to have had an email notification about this one.
Sometimes the songs that happen quickest end up sounding terrific - well done.

Big mac and little mac :-)
Thanks, Neil. The song did come together quite quickly and Stephen did a great job adding the lead guitar lines that really made the song shine. I hope the bass is OK, I did boost it in the mix to make sure it drove things along. Big mac and little mac :-) We appreciate you dropping by. About time for the Great Southern Band to resurface I think. I might have a song for us soon. Take care, Peter.

Big Mac says ....
.... bass is still a little low (or maybe just not defined very well) in the mix to me (saying that as a bass player of course!). Maybe Stephen is a little large in there (I always mix soloing collaborators up - it just seems polite).
GSB sounds like fun - I'm just about to embark on an interesting project to get some of the old Marastique guys together to do some recording. I'm REALLY looking forward to that!

Cool tune with a classic rock feel - the kind of stuff Eric Clapton would do. Stephen does a great job of axe wielding throughout the tune, and you, Peter, did a fine job of creating an interesting canvas for his work. Great collaboration - you guys should do some more like this - enjoyed!

Very cool
I concur that the bass could come up a smidge, the mid-freq (probably from the lead guitar) could come down a smidge and the vocals could come up a little too in places. You have Ozone 5 (I see)- so no long way round to fix ;) - I really liked the understated "glue" bass line in this (thought the guitar and vocal performances are great)
