Description
I did this song soon after I joined MJ almost exactly six years ago this month. It is a very retro sounding song and my poor understanding of recording and mixing and Garageband in general didn't help, because it was all so new to me and my age at the time didn't help (I was 70). Anyway I always liked the sentiment behind the tune and the words.... who doesn't like the 'Impressionists' ? Also as a painter myself I just thought i needed to get across better, the pathos, emotion and the beauty of those long gone days left as a kind of legacy or memory in Monets' garden. I tried to do this by portraying the colour, emotion and nostalgia of that era, in the way I used the instruments and harmonies here violins, piano and with Monet being French, the accordion was a must...... sometimes a slight discord leading into perfect harmonies, like the flowers of his garden at Giverny, flowing and blowing free as if in the breeze, behind my vocal description. I hope this all makes sense and I hope I've improved on the first version of the song, with this completely newly performed and recorded version, cheers M

Lyrics
It's just a garden, a simple garden,
Where the people stop and linger,
And if you've been there, you must have seen there,
Rainbow colours ever changing.
There is something special there,
you can feel it in the air.
It's a little piece of Heaven here on Earth.

So many pictures, so many scenes,
Monet painted in his lifetime.
The lily flowers on mirrored ponds,
All the moods from rain to sunshine,
And the fragrance makes you sigh, As the gentle breeze goes by,
I could swear I heard the sound of Angel's wings.......
I could swear.. I heard the sound.... of Angel's wings.

Nicely done
That sound wasn't angel wings .. it was the lingering swish of Monet's brush flitting over a canvas : )

I went back to listen to the earlier version. While that one has charm, this one has vastly improved musical integration .. and I think your voice sounds more assured in its delivery. But then, if six years of participation at Macjams doesn't improve us .. what will?

It very
well might have been Warren..... nice of you to go back for comparison with the first version and I'm glad you approve of the difference here.... I was afraid my voice might have deteriorated too much over these learning years, but I did manage it.... thanks for calling in, regards M

Monet's garden
Serene and nostalgic. Soft and melodic. Washes over you. Monet is my favourite impressionist, heck.. painter probably (the technique just amazes me still)- I have a print of "Morning mists" in my living room in fact... not one of his best or most popular.. but it often suits my mood in the morning :). Good post Maurice, enjoyed that.

Hi Alan
Glad you enjoyed my little commentary...... oh yes I do think Monet sums it all up, though I do like most of the other impressionists as well.... my paintings are more conventional, but I did paint my own impressionist water lilly scene for above my bed-head (nowhere near Monets').... well I like it anyhow LOL.... thank you for taking this in... much appreciated, M

A
beautiful song Maurice with a lovely melody.
Our friends have been to Monet's gardens and they love it there, their daughter Giverny was named after the place.
Very much enjoyed and a lovely post.

painting with notes
First of all, about a hundred thumbs up for the concept and general presentation.

But maybe one of those thumbs is kinda halfmast for that sound that sounds like a theatre organ. It dominates a bit, and it's somewhat unwavering.

But hey, ultra cool and very creative song!

A hundred thumbs???
Ha ha, Vic did you play it to your neighbours.....very kind of you to comment so favourably and I'm very pleased you approve...... the organ sound you mention is actually the chords to the Accordion. That particular one is one of the Boldt accordions in GB and the most effective, apart from the fact that the higher the pitch the faster the vibrato, so with my left hand on chords the pitch is lower and the vibrato non-existent, making it a bit like a drone..... sorry if that spoiled it a little, cheers M

Monet's Garden
Bright into. Emotive vocal. I might have used a warmer synth throughout, although maybe that would have made it too lush? Monet's Garden is a beautiful place and when you see the pond and the bridge and the flowers and realise you are standing where Monet sat to paint them, it's very moving. Great job, Maurice!

Well Philip,
the instruments I used were from the GB menu and I did EQ a bit to get them warmer, but it's easy to get them muddy I discovered..... then again I wanted a bright sort of sound to match with the idea of the paintings, with those two tracks of the same violin vying with each other to form harmonies and runs as the flowers in the gardens do.... that was my idea anyway. Yes, I said to Bob above, I must make that trip one day, regards M

The Monet Movie....
...featuring the exquisite music of Maurice Vizard. Where are the producers and financiers who will select this poignant tune and ethereal orchestration to underscore a retrospective of the great Impressionist's view of the world? You fill this with shimmering light and a simplicity of design that simply radiates the beauty of this garden that he captured on canvas so long ago and that you have captured in sound and lyric. I love "...of angel's wings" that you speak out at the end of yet another memorable vocal interpretation. What a blessing your music is, Maurice. It always brings a smile to my face.

Monet's Garden
A lush, sentimental, almost other-wordly post, Maurice. Monet's work has weaved it magic on you. The Impressionists and Post-Impressionists collections at both the Musee D'Orsay and the Musee de l'Orangerie just across the Seine were my highlight of our trip to Paris earlier in the year. Thanks for reviving some fine memories. Regards, Peter.

Maurice
Nicely done Maurice. We sometimes stay with a friend near Giverny, and the last time we were there, spent a quiet afternoon in Monet's garden, surprisingly crowd-free for the time of year. This song recreates the "time and place" of the garden beautifully. It also expresses the almost oher-worldly sense of beauty in the reflections and colour. Fortunately it doesn't express the experience of being invaded by a large group of noisy US teenagers as we were leaving :)
You certainly have come a long way since I started listening to your songs Maurice. A shining example to us "young uns".
Best wishes from the Antipodes.
Neil

You certainly
get around Neil and apparently in the nicest places too.... must have been a lovely holiday that one and I'm full of envy. It's nice to know that my song can evoke and equate with your memories of the place, though I can't quite understand that the US teenagers were 'noisy'.... are you sure they were American ? LOL
Yes I think I have come a long way since joining MJ; after all it is a learning curve when previously all I'd done was stand on stage and sing and play down a mic' .... then when I come here, I have to learn how to mix and edit,EQ and everything else.... so I'm really grateful for all my experiences here and the help I learned, not just from the people, but from listening to the music. Thank you too to Apple for providing us with our personal 'Studios' GB, Logic etc.
Thanks again Neil really appreciate your comment, regards M

I wanted to capture that romantic period where 'new' things and styles of painting were being discovered..... that's also partly why I chose the flickering violin vibrato to emulate those old movies that flickered and yet carried (and still do) the memories and romance of that age.
