Description
i used a you rock guitar midi controller for the piano & synths on this piece. way simpler then having to figure out the transition from guitar to keyboard. anyway i started writing about a comet and somehow ended up with a blackhole. go figure

Lyrics
darkest skies

waiting for the comets to fall
thought we would prevail it all
under the darkest skies
counting diamonds in the night
stealing every one in sight
under the darkest skies
though the comets never came
every night was still the same
under the darkest skies
blackest hole consumed it all
hearts souls and saturn's rings
under the darkest skies

dark skies deceived our eyes
dark skies under disquise
dark skies the thief of night

silence in darkness so complete
where we stood a dead end street
under the darkest skies
what came before is no more
under the darkest skies

dark skies deceived our eyes
dark skies under disguise
dark skies the thief of night

dark skies the thief of night
stole it all away

So you rock with You Rock
Superb tune Vic, great sounds and arrangement.

Does the controller allow you using bends, hammer ons, etc ? I wonder how it would sound with a piano sound.

Very cool listen Vic, thank you.

no bends... the strings are flat and fixed on the fretboard. there is a whammy bar but it sounds more like the pitch bend on a keyboard. this will control any midi instrument, be it sampled or synth in most programs.

Has a Doors vibe with a modern arrangement. As if Strange Days were recorded today. Great use of keyboard textures and parts. Once again you rock.

i guess i was born way to late :-)
using a guitar midi controller sure saved me time on not having to transpose from the guitar to the keyboard, especially on the piano track, thanks again

Great song Vic
Very interested in the MIDI guitar after trying to play clav and B3 tracks for my current project - very time consuming, and never satisfying. Pretty incredible chords/structure you have here - quite complex to the ear - maybe a little busy in parts. I could be suffering from aural overload after more than a few hours trying to make my project sound like something I might like to post.
Pretty amazing post Vic.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

the midi guitar sure saved me a lot of time for the piano & synths, especially with some of the odd chords on this piece. however this one took me quite a while to get a good mix going. thanks again for checking it out neil

I so want one of those...
Maybe by summer's end... Just being able to fool around with sampled instruments and keyboards...

You've got some nice deep bass tones on this Vic, which satisfies my desire for your treblistical tendencies to be balanced with depth at the other end of the spectrum.... You've done a nice job of framing the lead guitar in a spacious synth wash, and the drums are nice and crisp... On my stereo, there's plenty of space and a nice sonic balance to the mix...
Vic Holman said 1437 days ago (May 19th, 2013)
thanks ed
fun thing to play around with. the onboard sounds.... not that great. but when you plug it into the computer, logic reads it right off the bat. i spent quite a few evenings just going through the synths and software instruments.

now this is the truth, i asked myself does this have enough bottom end to satisfy ed :-)

YRG
definitely has its uses.

This has a very different feel about it than previous songs. Maybe the darkness has worked its way into how you present this.

Excellent as always with a deep undercurrent of something disturbing.

Stupendous sounds as always.

Cheers

Dick

So the opening piano synth sound is played on a guitar? How cool is that!
This is real good Vic ... vocals sit nicely in your mix. I like the sound of the guitar break ,,, tone and sustain ... Everything works so well in this piece. Nicely written performed and a solid big mix.

Darkest Skies
interesting in every way, vocally, musically and sonically. I enjoyed the arrangement, and unorthodox time feel. If I could make one suggestion Vic, and it's just my way of thinking for a song like this, but I found myself yearning for more width...really widening the stereo field would in my opinion add to the celestial feel you were going for. Really like this!!!!

I love your rock guitar choice...
Crisp. ... Uh, sorry: I don't see or hear the "black hole." Rather, you have filled up the musical space with some really intriguing chord changes and all those ominous, buzzing guitars...and, of course, the great solo around 3:00 and following. You always make excellent choices in how you mix all your musical elements, and this number is among the most polished I have heard. Excellent.

Supposably, black holes make a lot of noise :-) finding the right synths took awhile to nail down. using a midi guitar made it a lot easier to do especially the piano track easier, trying to figure some of the chords from guitar to keyboard would of been a bit of a challenge, for me at least

interesting
lyrics, I was listening to Coast to Coast and Graham Hancock was talking about a comet that hit the earth 12000 to 13000 years ago and really messed up the earth big time. The lyrics seem to have that theme and your music has that dark theme. Just hope it doesn't happen in my lifetime. Thanks for sharing and being a great part of Macjams! Cool licks cool singing, playing. Like the ending too !

Nope! Not fallin' toward an all consuming black hole....
Vicar, that's like free falling into an abyssal..... The 'Enterprise' would back-up just in the nick of time.... and "Scotty" would beam us up into the awesome night sky over the Joshua Tree National Park ~ a sky sparkling with diamonds..... No city lights, no haze of glow...... Just perfection in the night, lying in peaceful contemplation of the vastness of the universe, on a woven Navajo blanket of softest cloud, staring up at a billion bright stars in the heavens. With the little time we are blessed with here on this mortal coil, who can afford to waste any more time getting sucked into the negative energy of black holes? ~ weirdly compelling? ~ yes ~ for quitters! ~ but, not for those who make the most of every moment, experiencing as much as the world and heaven offer us, unfathomable beauty, if we will only open our eyes.
