Description
I purchased my first Tom Waites Album in 1976.
I found these lyrics on an old floppy disc two weeks ago. Inspired by who? I hear you ask.
I put the whole thing down on my iPad and lay down in a puddle

Lyrics
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY w&m Franciscus Henri

THERE ARE COLOURS IN THE RAINBOW
THERE IS SILVER IN THE STARS
THE STREETS ARE WASHED WITH GOLD
BUT NO ONE WANTS TO BUY
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THE CABERET IS EMPTY
THERE IS NO ONE FOR THE SHOW
THE CARNIVAL IS SILENT
THE CAROUSEL WONT GO
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THE PRIEST'S IN HIS CONFESSIONAL
READY TO ABSOLVE
BUT THERE'S NO ONE THERE TO TELL THEIR SINS
AND HIS HE'S NEVER TOLD
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THE PROSTITUTE'S STOPPED SMILING
'CAUSE HER PLEASURES ARE HER OWN
IT DOESN'T BUY THE BREAD AND MILK
IT DOESN'T PAY THE LOAN
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THE HAIR DRESSER WHO'S LOST HIS HAIR
CAN NEVER CUT HIS OWN
BUT HE KEEPS HIS SCISSORS SHARP
AND HIS RAZOR HONED
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THE BUTCHER TAKES HIS CARVING KNIFE
AND CUTS DOWN TO THE BONE
AND WHEN HE SEES THE BLOOD RUN
HE KNOWS THAT ITS HIS OWN
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THERE ARE NO CHILDREN IN THE MARKET PLACE
NO WOMEN ON THE STREET
NO YOUNG MEN IN THE TOILET BLOCKS
OR PLACES WHERE THEY MEET
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THE CITY MORGUE IS LONELY
THERE IS NO ONE ON THE SHELF
THE UNDER TAKER TAKES A SPADE
AND BURIES HIMSELF
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

THERE ARE COLOURS IN THE RAINBOW
THERE IS SILVER IN THE STARS
THE STREETS ARE WASHED WITH GOLD
BUT NO ONE WANTS TO BUY
THERE ARE NO CUSTOMERS TODAY

That was a blast!
Tom Waits channeled.

Like something from a hip club in the 60s.

Great lyrics and a splendid piece of free form accompaniment.

Enjoyed!

Cheers

Dick

Contemporary Craziness
It reads as a poem capturing a fleeting moment .. and as a general statement about contemporary hard times. The crazy carnival of sounds perfectly reflects the sardonic situation.

Thanks Warren I like the idea of lyrics as poetry
Waits does it well. Bernie Taupin is the master.

I love the lyrics - very evocative. As far as the backing goes, I think the piano has been drinking.

Crazy Cool
Both the lyrics and the music could stand amazingly well on their own, together, they're like gas an fire producing a frenetic and chaotic explosion of extreme coolness.

Awesome!
