Lyrics
Little Black Dress
Lyrics by Carie Treder

(A)
It's been a while since I had any reason for dancing
But when my heart skips, I want to sway in time, yes
(A Prime)
I'll pull out my dancing shoes, polish them to a shine
And for you, dear, I'll wear my little black dress
(B)
You came along and taught me a song
In a lovely new key
No more red or blue you said
Only the classics for me
(A)
Whether waltz or swing or tango, or a sweet minuet
I'll take your breath away in my little black dress

(Bridge - Instrumental)

(A)
Tonight's the night that we remind the world we're here
We'll light the floor up with every step and each caress
(A Prime)
Like a serenade of moonlight, like an old cliche
I'll take this time to thank my little black dress
(B)
You taught me things that make me believe
That passion is real
With your hand on my waist and your lips pressed to mine
Oh the tempo I feel
(A)
Whether jitterbug or foxtrot, I'll be hard to forget
I'll set the world on fire in my little black dress

(Bridge - Instrumental)

(A)
Whether waltz or swing or tango, or a sweet minuet
I'll take your breath away in my little black dress

Authentic period performance and recording. Carrie does a fine job and the arrangement is languid and cool at the same time. Fine post. Thanks, Peter.

Classic sound. Excellent song. Has a boys on leave before they storm the beaches of Normandy vibe.

That might have marked an end to a great and classic era in music. During the war there began a change in American and world attitudes, which was reflected in the music that was popular. In fact it was only 5 years or so after the war's end, that we hear the first Rock in Roll.

The Great American Songbook
....has a new entry it seems. I love the sound and feel of this: it's definitely in line with Porter/Carmichael/&c.

Hm. You've labeled phases "A" and "Aprime". So in a way you are adhering to the classic AABA structure. However, the A and Aprime start quite differently: one has an ascending structure, while the other swoops down, and in fact they seem different for a whole line. Also, the end of Aprime has the "little black dress" tag line, that you'd normally expect at the end of a full verse, so it's not even like Aprime is a repeat of A with minor variations: it's more like an independent phrase. Ok, so that means that the listener hears the start of the melody only once per verse, rather than 3 times as in the classic setup. My suggestion would be to let A and Aprime resemble each other a bit more, to give the listener more of a foothold in the structure of the song.

Otherwise muchly enjoyed.

'Your Form is in need of a bit of restructuring', said the rebel.
It's great to hear from someone who actually knows the subject well. The A-prime adheres only to the chord progression, which leads to a greater allowance for variation in the melody's structure. The progression, although made complex by chord extensions and chord substitutions, is still the foundation of any form. So this is my observation. The most common A part in the AABA is the 'exact copy' after that any variation is valid, as long as it follows rule #1 of melody writing.

this is amazing
I love your voice! Very nice accompaniment, the guitar player knows all the chords don't she/he? IF i didn't see the credits I would have thought this was from the '30s. Nice job.

Thank you. That was my objective to create a '30s look alike...errrr... sound alike. Carrie is one of those do it in one take sort of performers, and incredibly flawless with her work. She also wrote the lyrics. If I had written the lyrics with that title I would have had it all fouled up.

I hear a little of Katie Melua in this - that lovely light, gentle vocal (with a few deeper parts to add variety). I like the rhythm guitar a lot - it captures the era well. The rest of the arrangement works well well, too. A gem!

Thank you. It was a perfect recipe - a dash salt, a pinch of Katie Melua, and of course a thread from her little black dress.
