Description
The bass is the Trilian acoustic upright, percussion is EZdrummer latin ezx. I took a loop and tweeked it till it fit the song, in the end I doubt it resembles the original at all. The classic guitar is the one in the world jampack, but I re-amped it through a presonus blue tupe pre-amp that my friend Dale Curtis gave me. I think it really took out most of the plastic-y sound of the sample. I am very happy with the way this turned out, but as usual with me, there may be a few tweeks in the mix after I've lived with it for a while, so I'm open to any feed back from my peers here. Thanks for the listen guys, it really means a lot.

This is the first tune finished from my next album.

Lyrics
where did they go
all those minutes, days and hours
at the time I thought they'd just go on and on
i've done some good i hope
not enough though i suppose
o father, please forgive me
oh child, take care of every waking moment
they will pass
in the flashing of your eye
you can't save them
you can't keep them
you can't hold them

i can look back on one glorious sunset
red hot like a fire
but slipping away
somehow i thought
all would last for ever
now i know
how quickly it fades

fade

this is how the story goes
the hearth grows dark
the lights grow cold and fade

truly wonderful song, love the intro and then the tempo changes into a lovely rhythm with the entry of your superb vocals.
Great lyrics and harmonies, love all the changes in the arrangement.

The extended opening showcases your fine guitar playing, Paul. The bass sounds great, too. Your emotion charged vocals and harmonies really take the spotlight, though, when they arrive to tell the story. The changes in dynamics and tempo give the song a unique character but it has a timeless quality as well. I was reminded of Cat Stevens and then Don Maclean at stages. This is a substantial slice of song writing. Congratulations. Take care, Peter.

This gets off on a great foot...
Intro riff sets the stage for the sweet transition. Nice! I like your vocal. Again, sweet. Reflective lyrics. I like this kind of subjective subject matter for a song. Kudos, SLO-man.

thanks Cali-bro
I've heard it so many times that I'm beginning to think that there's something to it- the central coast has a sound and style of music that much of what I write fits in that genre. I like the idea.

thank you!
That bass is the Trilian by spectrasonics. I really can't say enough good things about it. I've just scratched the surface of it too. Kinda pricey but for the realistic sound and inspiration it brings I think it's well worth the money.

The intro guitar struck me as very "Mrs. Robinson" like. The percussion started taking it into more of Peter Gabriel territory. Great vocal. I envy your range. Beautiful harmonies. Great lyrics. A universal subject I know I think about often. The tempo and dynamic changes reminded me of Don McClain. Well mixed.

Interesting arrangement with the lengthy and contrasting opening section. Nice tone to the instruments. Superb playing. Thoughtful lyrics sung with a good level of intensity. Sounds CSNY style to me - I like it a lot!

In my opinion the music that came out of the late 60's and early 70's was the apex of pop music so that is the style that I write in, I used to worry about it, but I figure I need to write stuff that I want to hear and let the rest take care of itself. Because the reality of it is only a handful of folks willever hear it anyway. Thank you so much for the listen!

Epic
Very cool. For me, the vocals are the true highlight. And the sense of epic story. It does take a while for you to start singing. The song could start at 1:03, at least the radio play version. ;) And when you reprise that opening riff again at 3:52, have it bite as much as it does in the opening, especially with that bass hit that you don't hit as loud or gritty on reprise. But this is a way cool song. I really like it.

as I walk away
Ok, as I was walking away from my computer, I couldn't get that opening riff out of my head. So, just as another suggestions, if you do start the song at 1:03, you could cut and past the opening onto the end, and have it actually fade. Its what I heard as I was walking around with this stuck in my head...

thank you so much
For the critique. I don't think I changed anything on that 2nd bridge, at least not on purpose. But I'll give it a look. It is a long tune for sure, but as I was telling Phil, not many people will hear it besides me, so I write the stuff I'd like to hear. I'm not complaining about it just being realistic in my expectations. I do however want it to sound as good as possible, so not only am I glad that you like the tune, I very much appreciate that you took the time to give it a critical ear as well. Thank you again Tobin.

about 2007 I received the gift of a presonus firepod. That launched me back into a love of music that I hadn't realized I'd been missing. Since then I've been writing and learning the craft of recording and mixing. I am now in two acoustic groups-... [see more]
