Description
Lacy was an Irish Setter that followed my daughter home one day, and I suspect she may have talked her into it. We tried to find the owner, calling the vet whose number was on the tag, but discovered that the dog with that tag number and name was hit by a car and died a year earlier, and that the owner didn’t know who this dog was. (Coincidently, his dog was an Irish Setter too.) I was a little apprehensive about taking in a dog with a stolen identity and a concealed past, but it didn’t take her long to gain our trust, and she turned out to be a pretty good dog, good enough to inspire this song, which I can verify is original. The title, however, is stolen.

I wrote it as a blues tune on guitar, but later on fiddled with it on the piano (?), and apparently it took a turn at that point. Now, years later deciding to record it, I asked Chris Flynn (rok41) if he could possibly reinsert some jazzy blues into it. Chris had contributed some great tracks on my song, Loading Zone, so he seemed to be a natural for this. For drums, I turned to my musical soul mate and brother, Jack Hemby (davisamerica)(#1), and he modestly sent a drum track which captured the spirit of the song perfectly. (The wood block sounds like the rattle in Lacy’s head.) For the solo instrument, I always think of Andy Wigzell (awigze) and his magical sax, and I knew he could work in a little of his mandolin to boot. And to mitigate some of the song’s unfortunate vulgarity, I knew the charming voice of Anne Cozean (Sisters) would save the song, and she sent me some great harmonies, and her dog too.

I hope you enjoy this little tune my friends and I have made. It’s been a blast. Poor Lacy left us many years ago, but I still expect that collar and tag to show up again somewhere. Peace. Terry

Lyrics
Lacy

Oh, Lacy, my doggie, she’s got eyes of brown
And she wears ‘em inside of her head
She uses ‘em often to look all around
And at night time she’ll shut ‘em for bed
Oh, Lacy, my doggie, she’s got red hair
And it’s spread from her nose to her tail
Did I mention that tail’s got bones inside
And she’ll whup ya when she’s feelin’ swell

Oh, Lacy, my doggie, she’s got them long teeth
And one even shines like a pearl
She’s got this strange habit of grinning when she’s mad
But generally, she’s a harmless ol’ girl
Oh, Lacy, my doggie’s got claws in her paws
And she likes to dig holes in the ground
But she never put nuthin in the holes that she made
And I don’t believe nuthin’s been found

Oh, Lacy, my doggie, she’s got that black nose
A point of interest, and it’s sniffy and cold
She sticks it in things you and I walk around
And the south end of friends, so I’m told
Oh, Lacy, my doggie, she’s so unrefined
She eats from a bowl on the floor
And I seen her at times throwing up what she ate
I suppose so she could eat it once more

And she says “Bow wow!” What the heck is “Bow wow?”
I never listen no how, but it’s a curious thing to say
She says “Bow wow,” and she says it real loud
Aw “Bow wow, bow wow, bowwwwwww wow!”

Another excellent track Terry
Great team on this - a nice amalgam of lots of styles I like with a large amount of humour thrown in for good measure. Lots of Levon Helm in there.

Yes, I tried to allude to a bit of the chaos that must have been in Lacy's head. This team caught the spirit I was looking for.

Your tracks worked perfectly in this. I never worked with strings before, but that sax pulled them together. The solo was great, and that mandolin was a must. Love it!

LOVE IT! It's only 6am and I went to check e-mails and saw this posted. What an awesome song to hear first thing in the morning. I was laughing so hard at some of the words! Thanks again my friend for making another great song!

I was hoping you would enjoy it Jeannie.
I got to try out Ed's mic on this, and it held up fine to the howling. I assure you no cat was harmed in this, and that screech in the finale was merely a dramatization.

THis is a nice change for the ears. Love the 3/4 oompa pa feel . Great playing all around ... the piano bass and drums keep that solid foundation for the tasty vocals, harmonies and instrumentation going on ... enjoyed the doggie humour! ... especially that last sax note with the screeching cat LOL!!! Excellent songwriting!

My mixing is sometimes a little shaky, and there were moments I considered handing off that chore to one of the others, who all know their way around in that maze of bells and whistles, but I stuck with it, and was fairly satisfied with my efforts. I was richly blessed with their contributions as it was. We all thank you. Peace

Lacy
Here I sit grinning just drinking this all in trying to think of what to say. I love that waltz tempo riff at the start which carries on with dips and twirls on such strong downbeats through the song, and how the instrumentation and little flourishes is absolutely perfect for the style of song. You guys could hit the road any time - maybe play dog shows?

Seriously, this is great, it grows on you, and I'm into my second listen now. Thanks all!

I was a little skeptical, Anne
When I sent that raw track to you guys I was prepared for the question, "You're not serious?" but you graciously jumped on board to assist me in my crazy little whim. This turned out much better than I could have imagined. Personally, I now think I should have brought up your harmonies a little more. They were dropped a bit in my attempt to make the lyrics clearer, but they sound great. The "ewww" was hilarious and softened my overly graphic report of Lacy's eating habits. You all were great, and I really appreciate you humoring me in this, and hopefully you had as much fun as I did. Peace, Sis. T
