INTO THE BLUE

Description
Written and recorded over 5 weeks while I had a bad dose of the flu. The words are non-specific, sort of, but, like a lot of my lyrics, aren't about what you might think. Hint: many of my recent songs have been about bands.
It developed on it's own really, and it's nothing like I had originally imagined it to be. Drums and percs are based on midi loops with extensive modifications. Guitars are my trusty Tele, Seagull and Precision bass, and the clav and B3 are played on my Yamaha PSR300.
jiguma uses Røde mics :)

Lyrics
Into The Blue
©2013 Neil Porter

It’s not how we planned it
But it might have to do
It’s not on the record
But we could put it there too
It’s not what we needed
But it gives us a clue
It’s not what we wanted
But it might have to do

Into the blue
Out of my hands again
Into the blue
What can you do?
What can you do?

I’d rather not stay here
But that’s what you do
And getting away
Might be good for you too
It’s not what we needed
But it gives us a clue
It’s not what we wanted
But it might have to do

Into the blue
Out of my hands again
Into the blue
What can you do?
What can you do?

If nothing can save us
Make us shiny and new
Can something I say
Get me out of this zoo?
It’s not what we needed
But it gives us a clue
It’s not what we wanted
But it might have to do

Into the blue
Out of my hands again
Into the blue
What can you do?
What can you do?

I've heard one of your tunes, and you still have a knack for a really catchy melody, and that hoarse, expressive voice. All you can possibly need, really -- aside from things like food and shelter, that is.

I posted one Ben. I'm starting to get back into the writing groove now, so hopefully you won't have to wait as long this time. Loved your lates btw.

Hot night in MJ tonight. Terry and co., Stan and now the boy from southern New South Oz. A trio of great songs. Wonderful vibe, Neil. I really like the vamp during the verses. Great hook. It's a song that really insinuates itself into your head as it progresses. Some tasty Tele licks and a sparse but rock solid arrangement. Fine song. Talk soon. Regards, Peter.

Then Karen posted as the icing on the new posts cake :) Clearly there will be another surge in MJ activity for a while. The chorus on "Into The Blue" was very difficult to get moving, but the clav seems to have done the trick. It's an odd little song :)
Thanks for the liste n and comment!

Nicely done Neil ... quite like the opening. Smooth vibe and an excellent recording. Your tele sounds great! I'm always a sucker for a B3 sound ... Good song.

You make the drums kick. The B3 fills things out nicely. The Tele is tasty - great tone in the fills. Your vocals always have an emotive power. I love listening to your work, Neil!

How was France? Glad you enjoyed this little ditty, and appreciate your comment about the tone on the Tele, as you seem to get brilliant tone all the time.

Really cool work, Neil. Excellent everything - as always with your tunes - I especially respect your ability to create such an effective live sounding recording - could have been recorded in a club for all I know. Enjoyed this my friend - nice!

Thanks for the listen and your time. I'm just so keen to play my songs live, but so far haven't been able to find other players in my area that "get" what I do. Hoping to make some progress on that later this year, but it is just so frustrating! At least we have MJ as our little club ;)
Cheers from Oz,

I'll take ....,
...... "outrageously great" from you anytime Vic! Thanks. It's an odd tune to me. I was never sure where it was heading or what it was about. At one stage I had a synth bass instead of the Precision, and lots of other synths instead of guitars - luckily I overcame that urge and returned to real strings instead. I was so relieved when I found the key to making the choruses (chorii?) less dirge-like. Anyway, I'm happy now that this is posted. I have a few on the drawing board that I'm itching to get to work on.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

One flu over the seagull's nest
Hey, Neil, this is pretty cool. I like your flu-ridden voice. Nice groove. Re "Get me out of this zoo" – they just opened a new outdoor gorilla exhibit at Como Zoo in Saint Paul, MN. The biggest in North America. I wonder if the gorillas will be singing a similar lament.

I like the clav
Adds a nice touch in conjunction with the drums. I also enjoyed the last change on the progression where you accent it with a guitar riff kind of George Harrison/Eric Clapton style. Vocal melody delivers that signature Porter sound. Enjoyed the song but I couldn't decipher the band you wrote about.

Love this track Neil
great vocals and ace playing and production. You manage to reflect some of my favorite artists in a fresh and exciting way. Hope you don't mind the comparisons - you have your distinctive style - but it's up there in good company. There is a bit of The Dead that seems to come through to me at times - or maybe more Garcia Band with Melvin Seals on B3 - and your vocals have a similar quality that I like in J.J.Cale. That said - this track stands strong entirely on it's own merits.

Thanks for the visit Kevin
I'm pleased that you enjoyed this one. Interestingly, I listened to a little JJ Cale when I was younger, and a small amount of The Dead, but nothing of the Garcia Band. I guess I probably should go back and have a listen. Its really interesting how our influences (and limitations) mould us into performers - now if only I could sing like Sting!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Those
drums sound so real Neil and I love the clarity and space the chorus after the catchy plodding beat comes across beautifully smooth.... lyrics are still coming across well and each can put their own interpretation on them I suppose, but it all comes across as radio ready (as always) and a very good listen, regards M

Into The Blue
Neil, there's a very live feel to this; striking mix. I think one of the biggest reasons that i am drawn to your songs is that you get it; groove is king! The way you mix the bass and drums/percussion on top (instead of buried) is warmth to my ears. Very nice song, musicality and mix my friend.

Bass and drums
are indeed the foundation of a good rock song, and that's what I noticed first. The Tele sounds good too. Hearing your stuff makes me think an investment in the new, crazy - cheap Logic is a good idea.

Hi John!
Thanks for listening. The blue sky in the pic is of MJer Marc Trannoy ("Blakey Smith") flying his ultralight in for lunch with us near the French/Swiss border in 2009. A beautiful (and friendly) part of the world.

Taut!
LOVE the eighth note chordal rhythm in the verses, it really drives the piece; and sets up the more fluid chorus. This is some nifty production and arranging work, man. Love the space you've put into the sound field without boominess and a "big hall" fake sound. The subtle organ underpart ties it all together nicely! Got my neck moving. Kind makes me think of something Bowie would do. Dig the intimate breathiness in your voice, too. Well done!

Blue
Love your overall feel here Neil - the extensive drum loop modifications to the dual tracked vocals in the chorus this sounds well tailored in all dimensions. The B3 is subtle but supports the vocals and those hot solos. And the bass work - well it absolutely sings too!

Good one Neil and thanks for the iTunes addition. Cheers from the GWN,
Doug
