Description
Another song Jerry wrote while in the hospice. We originally started working on it back in January 2012. Jerry had just received some pretty devastating news. We both thought making some music could take his mind off of his troubles (at least for a short while). We went into his studio but neither one of us had any ideas. So I suggested we revisit some chord changes I had sent him months earlier. They were in Em with a latin feel. He hummed, scatted, and sang a line here and there while I played, just looking for an idea. Once when we reached the end of the form he sang the line "where has it gone." I immediately stopped and told him I thought that was a great line and the seed to grow the song from. We didn't go any farther with it that day and eventually shelved it in favor of other songs. In the months that followed Jerry became more focused on his health and it wasn't until he went into hospice care that we got back to making music.

I don't recall if it was on my prompting or Jerry finding his way back to this one on his own. But I arrived at the hospice one day to find he had these lyrics complete (or near complete) in a notebook. Once again I was struck by the power and honesty in his words. Aging, justice, faith, and mortality were all prominent topics. But what really struck me was how he presented them in a narrative about someone else and himself at the same time. It's as if he created a character based on himself but containing attributes he had observed in others. For instance, Jerry didn't have a girlfriend working as a nurse on the 3rd shift. But I'm sure he knew many a 3rd shift nurse due to his experience with hospitals and hospice. Other lyrics were clearly deeply felt personal statements, particularly those about faith. I can't be sure why he included the line about "Lee Harvey Oswald and James Earl Ray." But I do recall having a conversation where he said he felt like cancer was "murdering" him (not killing him). A murderer by any other name perhaps? What I love most about the lyrics is the way they paint a portrait of a man with many questions but one who never claims to have the answers.

I grabbed my guitar and started playing my latin groove in Em. Jerry was having trouble making it work. He couldn't find a melody and his lyrics just didn't seem a natural fit for my changes. So I said, okay, just sing your lyrics without me playing. I wanted to know how he heard them. Right away he went into a slow bluesy shuffle. Great! We found a key and spent the next 30 minutes or so hammering down the form and changes. He let me get a bit jazzy with some of the chords and altered some melodies to fit. Now that the song was written I recorded a scratch guitar track to a click and then several tracks of Jerry singing.

It was now time to reach out to friends and family to put a band together. Fred (Loob) had helped out with a few of Jerry's other tracks and I knew he would nail this. He accepted my invite and quickly came back with an awesome drum track. Great groove and I love his fills. That China cymbal rules. And how about his unique approach to a shuffle during the coda! John (ktb) had also played on several of Jerry's songs so when I needed a Hammond organ part I knew who to ask. Of course he nailed it too and the cool voicings he added during the coda were a bonus. My son Ryan provided an excellent bass part. It's always nice to have Ryan on one of Jerry's songs. Back in the 90's when Ryan was a teen, Jerry and I played together in a local blues band. Ryan would often come to gigs and almost always sat in. Sometimes he would play the entire gig while I sat at the bar and listened with a proud smile on my face. Those gigs with Jerry are when he really learned to play. So one more song together is a blessing. I struggled to come up with lead guitar parts so I reached out to Jerry and my mutual friend Jeff. Jeff played in the blues band with us those many years ago and I knew it would be great to have him along on one of Jerry's final songs. Jeff came back with the killer detuned part you hear on the right. I bring him front and center on his solo. Great work by everybody. I know it's band that Jerry would be proud to front.

And what happened to my Em changes? I gave them to Philip and Chris who turned them into Close to Midnight

Where Has it Gone
Lyrics by Jerry Quinn
Music by Jerry Quinn & Andrew Lack

Three days growth of whiskers,
On a pockmarked face,
Made me look a little tougher than I was,
Had a few shots of Jack,
At my girlfriend's place,
Just starting to feel the buzz,
My girlfriend's a nurse,
Working the third shift,
So I wound up drinking alone,
I took a walk outside,
And my mind began to drift,
And I wondered,
Where has it gone?

He remembered,
When he was a man with some drive,
But it drove off,
Somewhere without him,
Now a days it's tough,
Just staying alive,
Watching your hair,
And your bankroll get thin,
He believes,
That somewhere there's a truth,
Might be a fairytale,
With no promise of going home,
Right now I got nothing to lose,
And I'm wondering,
Where has it gone?

The working man gave,
His future away,
But he don't even know who to blame,
Lee Harvey Oswald and James Earl Ray,
To me they all seem the same,
The zest for life can slowly ebb away,
Wondering turns to wandering,
In a single day,
Cast between belief and doubt,
And the soul cries to know,
What it's all about,

Well lots of folks are waiting,
Waiting down here,
For God to make his big return,
Some are wondering,
If they are going to ascend,
Some are wondering,
If they're gonna burn,
Lots of folks are thinking,
I'm laid back,
Laid back and withdrawn,
Lots of folks are wandering round thinking,
Thinking, where has it gone?

Where has it gone?
The powerful lyrics and Jerry's warm vocal dominate this, as they should. I like the way you have spread the organ and the guitar, and the playing suits the mood of the song perfectly. The bluesy shuffle is a great vehicle for this song. Ryan's bass and Freddy's drumming sit in the slot and allow the guitars some freedom. I admire you for doing this work, Andrew - I guess you're going through a range of emotions as you produce it. The result is a fine piece of music that I'm sure Jerry would be proud of. Congratulations! Take care. Philip.

We all
have to go, but when I hear these songs I come to think Jerry really leaved too soon. I wish he was with us creating more of these gems. I can imagine the privilege you felt Andrew sharing this enjoyment with Jerry. Kudos to the other band members too ! It's a beautiful work on all aspects.

Where Has it Gone
Melancholy lyrics but not maudlin - just stating the facts as they really are. Great low key vibe in the arrangement but it still has that blues growl. Jerry does a fine job with the vocals and the "band" do him proud. Thanks for bringing it to life, Andrew. Take care, Peter.

oh Andrew, this is the pinnacle of the songs of Jerry's you've been working on! You just couldn't have put together a more awesome band. Not surprisingly I'm especially attached to John's terrific organ interpretation/work, and the way this all goes together flows like a river! fabulous work, major congrats to each and every one of you, and I'm absolutely sure Jerry is smiling big time while he's tappin' his toes! Top post Jerry and Andrew!
Excellent song, and I really like the playing from everyone. Not much else I can say really, except maybe I'd like to have had Ryan and Fred with a bit more prominence in the mix. But, that's just the way I mix I guess.
Love the way you are keeping your pal with us through his songs Andrew.

Nice work Andrew - another fine tribute to your friend Jerry. You put together a great supporting cast, and everyone put their best into this one. Jerry's vocals add an almost traditional country feel - the solos are great, drums and keys all well played, and your rhythm guitar sounds fat and bluesy. Fun tune to listen to!

In honour of
This is a song where the band is great and yet it's the lyrics that grab me - and I'm a person who is often lyrically challenged, not always as conscious about the lyrics as the way the music is put together. That said this is a first class track and a first rate band. You guys support and give life to the tune and make an acoustic hall where the vocal can sit, centre stage, and really ring out. Congrats all round, I really enjoyed the listen.

Thoughtful
There is so much going for this wonderful track: playing is stellar throughout; vocal is clear and warm and distinctive; composition itself provides the perfect vehicle for this story; some of those unexpected chord changes are just so tasty. I love the pace of this number, too. You didn't let the tempo get away from you even in the big bridge. Whoever is responsible for the final mix did a professional job and has kept every element in its proper relationship with the vocal always plenty out-front. A most-polished performance, gentlemen. One cannot help but be impressed.
