OUT HERE AND STRANDED - featuring Mandy Siegel

 Genre: Rhythm and Blues

Description
I posted a solo version of this earlier this year - http://www.macjams.com/song/75737 - but please, keep reading!
This is a live version of the song recorded with Mandy Siegel and PBGB members in The Shed in Pambula Beach. The second solo is the only dub.
Mandy is a new arrival in the area who loves to sing, and we (PBGB) have been very lucky to have her come along to The Shed every now and then to lift our game.
This version features Mandy on vocals, Kevin Breeze on bass, Peter Reid on drums, Raymond Toms on keyboards and me on guitar and backing vocals.
It was a total joy to do, and I'm so pleased to be able to post it here.

Afficianados may notice that I'm using regular chords here for a change - that's why I included them :)

It came out of nothing
Wasn’t something you said
No kind of a warning
There’s no voice in my head
I’m out here and stranded
It’s a quandary I’m in
Feeling disbanded
Tied up and branded

I’ve got no illusions
Got no axe to grind
I’m full of confusion
Of the worrying kind

Fishing for compliments
Never know where to look
Got a line in the water
But no bait on the hook
I’m out here and stranded
It’s a quandary I’m in
Feeling disbanded
Tied up and branded

I’ve got no illusions
Got no axe to grind
I’m full of confusion
Of the worrying kind

SOLO

Need to change the equation
Need to pick at the lock
Too much time on my hands
While I run down the clock
I’m out here and stranded
It’s a quandary I’m in
Feeling disbanded
Tied up and branded

I’ve got no illusions
Got no axe to grind
I’m full of confusion
Of the worrying kind

I have your recording of this on my iPod. Awesome tune! Translates very well to a female vocal. Excellent job by Mandy. Great arrangement and the band is super tight. Love the bluesy leads.

We've been sitting on this for a month or so, waiting to be happy with the mix. I was really pleased that Mandy was happy to sing it, and I reckon Kevin provided a great bottom end to hold us all together. As far as the leads go, its sometimes amazing what you can pull out of your hat :)
Cheers,
Neil

Good rhythm track sits underneath this - the bass and drums are woking well together, with the keys filling things out nicely. Well integrated solos. Mandy's voice is special - clear, warm and with plenty of motion in it. I gotta get into that shed sometime! Cheers from Down South. Philip.

Mandy has a brilliant voice, and is incredibly easy going - proof: she puts up with us! This was probably only the second time she'd sung the song, so I reckon that's pretty good. Hopefully you'll be hearing more from Mandy in the future.

The quality we are able to get in The Shed always astounds me. We run guitars, bass, keys and e-drums directly into the Presonus (and then to the Mac and the PA), and record the vocals in the room live. There's a lot of bleed of other sounds into the vocal mics (being live we have to hear the instruments), but it doesn't seem to create a problem - unless of course we start trying to mess about with the vocal tracks. The sheen comes from Ozone on the final mix.
The results are very dependent on who shows up in The Shed on any given day, and unfortunately it seems this lineup is unlikely to be together again in the forseeable future.
Always appreciate hearing from you.
Cheers,
Neil

Kev's bass is so fluid and solid on this, and for my money, it is the secret ingredient the song needed to take off. Of course having Mandy sing it didn't hurt at all either!

Mandy has had a lot of experience in quite a few areas of entertainment, including a mini tour of the US as a hip-hop act! To top it off she's a very positive person, and a good influence in The Shed. It would be great to do some live work with her, but she's looking at a jazz/funk band, which kind of cuts me out of the picture I suspect (especially the "jazz" part of the equation!). Although I'm not playing as much guitar this year, I'm growing in confidence on the instrument. I bought an overdrive pedal in January, and it has made a big difference to the sound I can get with the Tele and my little Vox.
I'm glad you noticed the guitar work on this.
Cheers,
Neil

Karen!
Glad you enjoyed this. Mandy is a gem for sure, and our voices do work well together on this.
PBGB is in a bit of a state of flux at the moment, so I'm not sure how much we'll be posting this year (which is one reason that this is on my page raher than the PBGB page). But, I have another musical project starting up with some guys I used to play with in Sydney in the early 70s - quite excited about it, and have expectations that we'll be able to do some good music together again :)
Life goes on.
Cheers,
Neil

I think a few of my songs have enough RnB in them that Mandy could lift them considerably from my own versions. I am always pretty pleased to be able to get such a good sound from our very non-acoustically "right" room. Getting the band sounding so tight was an added achievement I thought. Kev just nailed the whole thing together with his excellent bassline.
Thanks for having a listen Vic.

Neil

Terry!
Thanks for the listen and comment. Glad you enjoyed it. When you get a good live performance, it does seem to have more life - I guess that's why they call it "live".
Mandy certainly seems to get my RnB stuff, as does Kev on bass.
I should probably add here that Raymond is very much "just learning" on keys. So far we've slotted him in as flute player/drummer (when he joined a year or so ago), bass player (when we decided 3 drummers was probably too many and that we didn't have much use for flute), and now keyboardist. He is the epitome of flexibility, and deserves credit for switching between new instruments so readily (although I think he'll baulk if we suggest any further changes). Pete is the circus master in The Shed.
I tend to get a little picky about how my songs sound - maybe I should relax more :) This did come up pretty well.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Yes, I should perhaps mention that The Shed has pretty serious security, and in addition is guarded by George the dog. Mainly because Pete also houses his vintage Ford ute in there :) Note that George is actually a dog .... he's not like 8 feet tall, covered in tats and called "George The Dog"!
As you've already read above, I'm very happy to have Mandy singing on this and I hope we get to do some more of my songs together - we'll see how things work out!
Cheers,
N

The bass!
Kev's bassline was just right for this. He took my original line and tarted it up just enough to change the way the song felt. Unfortunately he's not with PBGB any more (although with Kev, you never really know). I'm usually happy with my bass tone on my Precision, but Kev runs his Precision through his Ampeg amp and then into the Presonus, and it is really a great sound. My next bass amp will definitely be the 350W Ampeg Fliptop - a fantastic bargain at the price. Our other bassist, Chris, uses a Musicman 5 string fretless (plus a host of other brilliant basses) through a MarkBass setup which also sounds brilliant, but much pricier.
Thanks for listening and commenting Tobin - always appreciated!
Very best wishes from Oz,
Neil
