What If Your Not?

Description
Stopped into the bar at the Captiva Island Marina. Got me a brandy and asked the barmaid to contribute a pen and a couple of napkins. While I was writing this down, a guy from upstate NY kept on telling about how wonderfully his life had been evolving... the daughter's abortion, failed internet business and unfaithful wife aside... things were really going great!

There is no spoon... :)
Love the disjointed, soundbyte approach. Chaos rules the day. The breakdown at 2:27 was welcome, glad it was there; that much frenetic sound needed an intermezzo, smart arranging choice. Drums are a smidge overdriven in places, is that on purpose? Thought-provoking and wild piece! Thanks! FIRSTIES!

Hey Mo!
You had them nights? I was having one sitting in that bar on the slip, the waves singing "Be My Baby" and my Yankee drinking buddy looking over my shoulder. You are still the man! Allow me to add, a constant source of inspiration as well. Keep on Mo!

What If Your Not?
This doesn't half remind me of Frank Zappa, so entertaining and compelling - this would have fitted like a glove into 'We're only in it for the money' - are you hung up? uh- are you hung up -uh- are you etc ..... etc etc.... this is a great track. Love the little story about the fella from NY as well...

Excellent Daug ... you're a man who knows how to express himself. Is that bass a synth?.... reminds me of a Pastorius fretless tone in spots ... so I don't hear Zappa in this one .... more jazz/rock/Daug fusion.

Truth be known it's got nothing to do with me at all... I'm just
the messenger. But since you brought it up... I will try to make one about me, we' ll see how that works.

Left, Right, Below, Above
As I listen to this, I feel like I do when I'm sitting at the kitchen counter by myself, hungry, and with something good to eat. And I'm reading, or looking at something that I don't grasp.. but definitely has my attention.. I'm hooked in with the 2:15 guitar note and what it brings on. Thanks for pulling me out of my box this a.m..

Hi Daugrin......
I liked this a lot. The joint I think I know, but only in a dreamlike way. The facts fit but tend to disburse. Disburse as in move apart. Not held by gravity. Not gravitas, but tight.

Held by the drums.

Glad I stopped by. Keep up the good work.

Take care.

And they say life is complex. Ain't nothing like the world you've put together in this song. This many soundbites would last me a week. Not to mention the instrumental snippets all over the place. The result is a very cool effect in putting this together - which makes all the effort (must have been a ton of work) really worth it. Thanks.

Hello Doug
Thanks for the listen. I appreciate your comments. This actually did not take but a couple of hours to complete. It's a capture piece, not like your Rhone piece though, it's a rough idea of what I heard that evening at the marina bar... You should try the capture thing it's like water color with music... Write music for a specific moment/event in time, about the time and the news...

all pyramid schemes come to an end, yes? ah, maybe not in this lifetime. sometimes i wonder if those at the top are any more free than us at the bottom. at any rate, i enjoyed sifting through the multiple layers of this satisfyingly wild tune; a great ride it is. free dumb? haha...

Hello Steve
Great to have you back in the house. This one is packed with funny lines. My fav is the Free Bum, or maybe Free None... and of course the hook- the Slick Willy boogie is a classic coinage.
I literally laughed so much I couldn't properly finish mixing this one...

What if you're not?
I get a sense of chaos I get when I listen to this and I'm trying to unpick it and hear the component parts. It seems to me that it's the interacting vocals, the fuzzy guitar and the entry and exit of various sounds that all stretch the ears. As always, fascinating work.

Hello Philip
This goes a long way in 4:41: with dead-on accurate yet funny lines and some cool/annoying licks ya never heard anywhere else and where appropriate the lampoon of common expectations... I would humbly suggest it is merely a Daug tune.

Hello Fred
Bill (the guy at the bar) wouldn't let me work in peace, him being so important, Elite and successfully programed, the idea being that his mind, so wonderful and expanded and all, made a huge impression on me as you can plainly hear... (he didn't tip the help either).
I will save the next napkin for the post...lol. My symbology will be no use to you, but if it makes you happy... That's what the Daug House is all about- making you happy, meeting your musical expectations and providing that warm feeling of belonging so essential to the online experience... Be free Fred...

The silverlining
to not being free is that underground art becomes a cause of celebrity and intellectual nourishment... Barmaids come in handy either way, tho?

Daugrin said 1324 days ago (July 9th, 2013)
Hello Tobin
I agree barmaids are treasures ;)
The notions of 19th century romantic love and modern carnality are contrasted in this piece, both found to be insufficient under the circumstances of the sexual revolution and so both properly considered passé in the ethos of the tune.
Celebrities and intellectuals take up a cause that does not serve their agenda? Naw. They care about Art? Sounds like the phony Elite regularly lampooned on this frequency, but tell me more :)

Wow. This is...different. You've really captured the chaos at the Captiva saloon. Very interesting how you have glued all of this together into a single impression. I'd love to hear the various tracks as solos. Could make for a really interesting study.

Well, Daug, I've just got back from travelling in south-west Western Australia - remote coastal beaches, quiet forests of magnificent Karri trees, etc. - you get the picture, and you just go and drag me kicking and screaming back into the chaos of reality. Thanks a lot... :-) Peter
