Description
The lyrics to this song are directly from Psalm 46. I had written an earlier tune for Psalm 46, but was never satisfied with it. This is one of those psalms you go to "in times of trouble". You can see a video version here http://youtu.be/J52RBlCynxA Thanks for listening!

Lyrics
God is our refuge - God is our strength
He is our help - when trouble comes
The earth may tremble - and the mountains fall
The seas are raging and the hills may quake
We will not fear

There is a river - whose streams make glad God's city
God is with her - he will help her at the break of dawn
Nations are raging - kingdoms fall
He lifts His voice - the earth melts

The Lord almighty - He's here with us
The God of Jacob - He is our strength
See the works of our Lord
He makes wars cease - to the ends of the earth
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear
We will not fear

Be still He says - and know I am your God
Be still =- and know that I am God
I will be exalted among the nations
I will be exalted in all the earth

Love your sound...
The clarity in your picking and the airy, spacious choices you make are really sweet. Is that guitar body percussion? :) Oh, and firsties!

I'm pleased you used the word "flowing" as I was attempting to create a the feeling of drifting down a river. Thanks for your comments Maurice.

delightful work
i enjoyed the soft guitar work, gentle singing, and occasional clarinet. the percussion that you carefully left at the very end gave the strong feeling that the song ended with a heartbeat, a nice touch. very nice mix.

Liturgy
The simplicity of this song makes it immediately accessible for a liturgical application. Your guitar work is always so pleasant to hear, and the instrumental bridge is also delightful, but could perhaps be a little longer. I like the sound of your voice very much, but (I think I may have said this on an earlier post) you need to get in closer to the mic. The importance of the text you are singing demands to be heard clearly. You can do it, man. Just step up and let it come out. ... This song is a peaceful refuge and not just for times of trouble. For always. Nicely done.

You sound like my Pastor - she is always telling me to get closer to the mic! And yes, this is a song intended for group singing. Thanks again for your helpful comments Paul.

Very sweet
Lovely tune, great guitar work.

The rhythmic inaccuracies bug me a little. For instance, around 0:55-1:05 it's really total chaos, with some parts before the beat and others after.

Other than that, good stuff.

Thank you Victor
Yes, keeping all the instruments in sync was challenging at times. If you have decent headphones or reference speakers you may have been able to pick up the sound of my little finger on my picking hand slapping the guitar - which is a problem when recording 12 inches from the mic. I appreciate your comments Vic and taking the time to analyze the recording closely.

Refuge
A gentle and easy feel to this piece permeates your lyrics and makes them all the more accessible - which is important for the reasons Paul outlines. The clarinet adds nice colour too. You sing well. See what happens when you sing from the perspective of being chosen as a channel for these words. No one else can make such a joyful sound of this song ring out as you can.

Peace,
Doug

A bit of a Klezmer feel, nice!
I love the sound of your vocals, your guitars, the layers, the clarinet. There are times when the rhythm isn't perfectly lined up with the wonderfully subtle percussion, which takes away a bit from the rhythmic drive of the song. I think the influence of Klezmer styling is really cool, and go with it even more! Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you Tobin
Yes, I need to clean up the rhythm and I appreciate you pointing it out. I've used the clarinets on some of my other songs and have found them to be an alternative to keyboard (which I do not play) to fill in. I love the klezmer/jewish sound and use it when I can. Thanks Tobin for your comments and having a listen.

Your vocals are warm and engaging, Bradford, and the arrangement works well. The timing issues can probably be fixed quite easily if you use the GB Quantize Note Timing feature on the wayward track. It will be called something similar in other DAWs. Enjoyed. Thanks, Peter.
