Description
I'm not sure if this is just something that we specialise in here in Australia, but we've had a number of instances in Sydney (and Melbourne too I think) where totally innocent young men have been "king-hit" late at night in Kings Cross by individuals with too much of something in their system. I'm sure I'm not alone in finding it totally impossible to understand this.

"Billy" is based on one poor young guy who was hit while on his first visit to "the Cross" with his young girlfriend - almost a year ago today. Billy was just 18. He was hit with a single punch without warning - he fell to the ground and hit his head on the kerb - his family turned off his life support system some days later. Billy is not the only one unfortunately.

I find this so incredibly sad, and was compelled to write something. I feel so much for his family.

On a lighter note, this is an old music base from my "Song Drafts" folder, lifted with some wobbly Telecaster, a B3, some serious drum tweaking and the vocal. It's pretty rough, but to be honest, I found it pretty hard to sing without choking up.

I asked John Libby for a keyboard track, and just before he agreed, I did a single run on the "B3" which worked well enough for me. So, sorry for pestering you John. I'm sure we'll have more opportunities soon.

Lyrics
Billy (Won’t Be Waking Up At All)
©2013 Neil Porter

Billy had a real fine first time girlfriend
He never met a girl like that before
They were going out to have some fun
Her momma said “get her home by one”
Now Billy won’t be getting home at all

Billy won’t be anywhere for breakfast
He won’t hear you when you call
Won’t see Billy and his kids for Christmas
Billy won’t be waking up at all

Billy won’t be coming home this morning
Billy won’t be coming home at all
He spent his last night on the scene
Now he’s plugged in to a big machine
Now Billy won’t be waking up at all

Billy won’t be anywhere for breakfast
He won’t hear you when you call
Won’t see Billy and his kids for Christmas
Billy won’t be waking up at all

INSTR

Billy won’t be waking up this morning
Billy won’t be waking up at all
Just one night out on the scene
They switched it off that big machine
Now Billy won’t be coming home at all

Billy won’t be anywhere for breakfast
He won’t hear you when you call
Won’t see Billy and his kids for Christmas
Billy won’t be waking up at all

Powerful song, Neil. Yes, it goes on here too. Young men who aren't capable (usually because of what they're put in their system over the previous hours) of weighing up the pros and cons of their actions - they just act. Your usual clean and driving backing let the words take the front position, as they should. Quality work.

Thanks Philip
I was trying a totally different subject for the lyrics, and getting more and more frustrated, then I saw the parents on TV and it fell into place and was recoded yesterday. Tidied it up this morning.
Such a sad situation, although when I used to play in Sydney, we had some pretty close calls with some pretty scary guys at times.

Powerful stuff Neil. We've had a few of those here on Merseyside too. Single drunken punch and that's it. Such a foolish waste.

Great song anyway.

Dave
Sometimes young men have strange idea of fun. Interestingly they are so brazen about it that they usually get caught. The perpetrator in this case ended up with a manslaughter charge rather than murder - I don't get how that works.
Thanks for the listen,
N

They call it The Knockout Game here
And it's epidemic. Teens try to knock random people out with one punch by surprising them. Your song conveys the darkness of this phenomenon with remarkable clarity and power. I actually like what you perceive as roughness, it's a comfortable loosey-goosey groove that fits the content exceedingly well.

Always enjoy your songs, Neil. Just some good, steady songwriting, rhytmic with good guitarwork and your distinctive vocalwork
Enjoyed!

So we're not the only insane country on Earth? Sad story but some fine story telling through song. Your posts always have a great live band feel. Digging the phased leads.

An epidemic of hopelessness
Moving piece and the pic is deafening. Truly a mirror of societies lack of purpose. Sad but necessary message delivered sincerely.

te snarl of the tele
and the groan of the B3 work so well together - really impressive feel added to solid backing track. Fine lyrics and vocals too. You are definitely in a zone.

Content Aside...
I love the vibe of this number. There's something about the chord progression that resonates with me...something contemplative about it. Your vocals go along great with the overall vibe of the progression, giving the song a very laid-back feel.
The content is very sad, and I think you've done a good job making your audience take notice of the fragility of life. Thanks for posting.

it does have a loose live feel. The drum track helps that feel. This grooves real nice ... writing while I'm listening.I like the organ with the guitars. Interesting effect in my phones when the lead comes in like it was floating over my head ... is that a phase EFX? Vocals sound good. The content is disturbing .... I had no idea that this punch thing is happening ... I lead a pretty sheltered life. Well, it doesn't happen here anyway. This world is going downhill which makes me become more and more insular ... create your own bubble !!
Good tune Neil

Sorry, "king hit" might be an Australianism. It means a single devastating punch, usually to the head, which renders the victim unconscious, or certainly incapable of responding. In this situation the victim is punched without warning or provocation - "out of the blue".
Both the victim and the attacker end up suffering of course, so, yes, a very big loss all round.
Cheers,
Neil

Love the tune
but difficult to listen to due to it's context. Effective then!
all the parts fit and before I even hit the play button I knew this would be classic Jiguma.

Great vocal
I mean, your mixes and production are always envy-inspiring, but I love your raspy voice on this - sounds like you had a night on the whiskey and cigarettes. Great catchy but understated chorus, and a sweetness in the melody that counters the sourness of the lyric. Your quality control is always top notch!

It usually
happens when there's drink involved and it happens here in the UK too, mindless thugs who don't usually do these things when they're on their own, though it does happen. Brilliant mix and song/ lyrics neil, regards M

It's been said
but - powerful.

Tough lyrics Neil. On Friday and Saturday nights it's best to stay out of some parts of Brighton city centre.

It's a pity the song had to be written but at least you did "Billy" justice.

Cheers

Tough subject. Hope they find the gutless losers who perpetuated this madness.

As for the tunage -

Showing off your production chops here. The organ sits nicely. Just the right flav of B3 :-)

An interesting song about a totally senseless crime. Or, really it's more about the poor victim, and the lives around him who are forever affected by this. Well done, Neil - a sad story but an enjoyable tune -

So sad...
The back-story is such an awful shame. And here I thought it was just on our side of Pacific. So so sad. I think it is remarkable that you chose this as the topic for your thoughtful song — something that needs to be said in response to the tragedy of it all. ... Musically, I am most drawn to the smooth/mellow accompaniment with all those swirling guitars and such.

The swirling mix accentuates the drunken haze and confusion that usually accompanies such mindless events, Neil. Great work on the B3 and your vocal style cuts through the mix well. A difficult song topic, very well handled. Congratulations. Regards, Peter.
