Description
Another from my more meditative 2008 release - "Heaven".

The CD is my musical interpretation of a hypothetical soul's journey from the moment of death to the moment of redemption. It is intended to paint an emotional picture of an uncertain path; one traveled with tentative steps, fraught with fear, trepidation, and loss, but leavened with hope and faith. This is the third "movement" of the concept piece; where the soul reflects on past existence, sorrows for transgressions, weeps for caused pain, revels in shared joys. I am considering going back and remastering the CD for re-release, as it is out of print. This music is a departure from my usual smooth/contemporary jazz; it is a fusion of Ambient, with jazz flavorings. It's darker and moodier than my other stuff... Roland RD500 piano, fretless bass helping the piano with melody/counterpoint bits, synth pads from Korg Triton 61. I think the B section is the best 30 seconds of music that's ever come out of me, for some reason.

Journey
Lovely emotional dynamics around the minute mark. A little Jaco bass, keys that actually sing and a mood full of reflection. Pacing is spot on to reflect the mixed emotions. A beautiful work and we get the joy of downloading? What a gift!

Thanks Phil.

Doug

Very sweet commentary, I appreciate it. This CD was like an art house film; great critical acclaim but not the commercial success I'd hoped for (

I guess
you could write for volume sales but sometimes things have to be said musically that just come from who you are - even if, in the extreme, you are the only one that gets it. I'm glad I came across your work Phil. Take care.

The Haunted
Certainly has the dark and moody effect you were seeking created by its heavy piano notes and the deep strings. I like the bass a lot - it flows well through the piece. Atmospheric music - I enjoyed listening.

That was my first attempt at working with a fretless bass. My last, too - the truss rod snapped shortly after that, and I didn't replace the rig. :)

First tune I've truly commented on in a while...
...And I'm glad I chose it first. I really like the sound. I happen to be a fan of "darker" piano and I like that accompanying synth(?) with it, kind of a dragging sound.

Glad I earned a full comment! :) Yeah, there's an airy synth pad in there and a fretless bass on the complementary melody line...

I just pressed
'Fave' before i even listened, because I know there's going to be something very good here Phil. Your description of the intentions behind this piece of faltering , unsure etc. is perfectly captured in lovely musicality and surprise twists and turns (a bit like life really ha ha )...... loved it, regards M

Groovy
Don't know if anyone uses that word anymore, but that's what first occurred to me while listening to this mellow track. Some of the jazz key/tonal shifts are really appealing and you accomplish them as smoothly as can be. Such a relaxing track. I don't see the "dark" that you mention in your notes, as the whole thing is fairly oozing with that very liquid, slow-Jazz feel. (Small nit: your Roland now and again kind of jumps out just a bit louder than notes that surround those spots. Wonder if those peaks can be mitigated just a tad so that the whole piano is more evenly regulated. Not a big deal, though, as the whole piece hangs together so beautifully as it is.) I very much like the idea of the bass becoming a solo instrument. You use it to very good effect here...and it's a bit unusual, too, so it becomes all that much more engaging. Pleasant journey. Glad I took it.

I don't have the Roland anymore...
But yeah, I feel ya. That's more my sloppy technique than anything else though; I don't have but a few percentage points of your finesse and touch. :) That said, I do want to talk to you about pianos, because I have something that's gonna rock your world. Thanks for the listen and comment!!

Phil, love your choice of color on this composition; Interesting chord choices and a patient approach carries it through. Your musicianship is off the charts! The fretless adds depth and emotion, excellent playing! I really enjoyed this, thanks for the DL!

"Emotional Picture of an Uncertain Path
The concept you're interpreting is relevant to where I am in life - feeling and observing this transitional process with with growing frequency. I enjoy hearing someone as musically articulate as yourself throw in on the subject.
I hope to locate and listen to the other movements. As is always true for me here on MJ's, so much to hear, so little time.

The Haunted
Smooth, mellow and contemplative. Well thought out piece and I really like the loose and relaxed feel to the tempo. There are a couple of really nice chord movements in this, and your choice of instrumentation is right on the mark. Enjoyable, relaxing piece Phil - thanks!

Actually,
I didn't feel it was as dark as it was more moody. I saw it as the background to a 1940's film with Fred Astaire slowly dancing around a library while his thoughts were shown as a flashback to a happier time when, say, his wife, was alive and they were young. So, for me it was wistful but accepting. I don't recognize musical instruments or synths, but I like that sound that, to me, is very much like someone humming. Thanks.

I think "wistful, but accepting" is a wonderful description; it's where my hypothetical "soul" in this musical adventure is heading, but hasn't yet reached by this time. :)

The fretless bass really gives the piano chordings the definition they need to deliver their message. It is a fine work to listen to and reflect upon. Congratulations. Regards, Peter.
