Samba Del Sur (with Rok41)

Description
Once again, I started with a set of chords and improvised over them until a melody emerged. For this sort of tune, a good bass line line helps a lot and this is where Chris Flynn comes in - his work is always so tasteful and interesting. I sent him the GB file and he added some percussion and his bass lines. He also did the mix and master. As always, the final version is much improved as a result of Chris's work on it!

I'm very happy with the way it turned out and I hope you enjoy listening!

Very nice!
Lovely chords Philip and a lovely warm tone from your guitar.
A wonderful bass line from Chris that makes this perfect and such a clear recording.
Well produced and some lovely guitar runs too, I enjoyed this a lot, thanks for the download.

Wow, super-smooth, super-subtle...
...and having said that, there's not much left to say. I normally can't listen to jazz but this is so good it overcomes that for me. I listened more than once and was downloading before it finished.

Samba Del Sur
Perhaps too much bass frequencies (in my headphones anyway), and the sweet percussion could be slightly higher in the mix I think, but I like this a lot. Nice and smooth! :)

An interesting comment re the bass frequencies - there were a few versions as we tried to get a good balance between full and punchy. And I have to admit that what I like on any one day can vary. Thanks for stopping by - much appreciated!

Always good to hear from you, Andrew! Yes, Latin Jazz is big here - in fact the Queenslanders call us Victorians Mexicans because we are from down south, so I guess that means we can play some of that wonderful music of theirs! Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Another quality trip way south of the border, Philip. Smooth and suave. You and Chris work very well together. Tasteful, inventive bass as always. Makes me want to kick back and have a cocktail and get a Brazilian... tan :-) Talk soon. Very soon, in fact. Regards, peter.

Very nice Phillip. Great Tone on the guitar and a gorgeous melody that you worked out. Chris does a pro job on the bass and percussion and really keeps that bass line moving. In fact that describes this whole recording. Very professional sounding.

That's good to hear, Vic. I must admit I do love the tone of the Howard Roberts - I've had it since 1974 and it's nice and mellow. Chris has the ability to both support and shine, and I love what he adds to tunes.

My compliments on the warm recording which suites this fine performance. Nice chord progression and the lead tone is all warm and smooth ... interesting second tone that comes in and joins at about 1:38. Superb playing by both of you. Lovely last chord.

Hi Stan!
Thanks for the comments! That tone you're talking about in Chris's bass solo (which starts at 1:38) might be explained by a comment that he sent to me at one stage of the production: " I did remix the solo and added a third above harmony line to the second half of the solo for texture." The last chord is an Fmaj7 and it does sound warm. Thanks for stopping by!

A unique samba, indeed.
This is so well-played and mixed. Impossible to not smile while listening to such slick, smooth work from two extremely talented musicians who are definitely at the top of their game. (I listened on just "ordinary" speakers and the volume of the bass seems okay to me there, and I am pretty sensitive to that. However, it might be a tad heavy in headphones. Don't know.) Anyway, a pleasant dance number doesn't get any better than this. Beautiful work.

Glad you enjoyed the playing! The guitar is a Gibson Howard Roberts. It's similar to an ES-175, but with only one pickup. I've had it since 1974 so it's well worn in! There's a picture of one (not mine, but the same as) here: http://utstat.utoronto.ca/mikevans/hroberts/guitars/hrproto.jpg

First I love the vibe you guys have got rolling but also the interesting chord changes you laid down make for a more careful listen than just having this wash over the ears. Your touch is brilliant Phillip - if I could play guitar a tenth as well I'd be pretty happy. The tone of the various leads makes for a lovely way to pass the melody around. The bass line is catchy and yes I can hear why it really helps move this piece forward - clearly Chris is also someone who knows what they're doing (in the beat section too).

Kudos you guys. Appreciate the dload.

On the fullness thing
I've discovered that fighting the battle between full/'wuffly" and punchy revolves around a 1/3 octave (31 band) EQ; and the juggling of the 63Hz and 80Hz bands. the kick drums and bass fundamentals often fight for space in this frequency range; and boosting one and cutting the other (sometimes dramatically) will clear out the space so both instrument can sit in the field and not overlap each other much. On my system, this mix was midly biased toward "wuffly", but just a little. Loved the playing; and yeah, Chris is as tasteful and melodic a bass player as I've ever run across; I find myself envious of a lot of his ideas and techniques. :) Great chord progression, and I too love the nice round and expressive tone you get from your lead voice, and I love the soloing choices you make. Delightful song, and great collaboration!
