The Song of the Lost

Description
A simple mood composition, in part just an excuse to use some new toys. I bought Jam Pack World Music cheap on DVD recently (eBay is great if used carefully) and as I'm studying pentatonic scales at the moment the two seemed to go together naturally. C-Minor pentatonic is a natural for some Japanese Shakuhachi flutes so that went straight in, and then I used two Japanese Koto and some sparing touches of Japanese percussion. The string bends had to be individually programmed into the Koto tracks, and yes, there are pitch-bends in the flute track too; good Shakuhachi players are expected to be able to bend the pitch of a note.

Try to listen without your brain engaged and see how the mood grabs you.

Thanks!
Had fun playing with the new toys, though it was also more work than usual to finish this. Glad you liked it.

Very nice!
Love the sound of the flutes. A lovely piece of music that left me very relaxed.
Good composing and performance.
Very much enjoyed.

Glad it is relaxing for you.
It was meant to be calm rather than exciting, with maybe a mournful feel. As for the performance, piano roll midi is mighty!

Atmospheric music. THe flutes have that touch of warm breathiness that always appeals. Much enjoyed.

Thank you.
The Jam Pack World Music is superb, perhaps the best of the lot, and the quality of several of the flutes is very high. The Shakuhachi is my favourite so far and really this piece was written just as an excuse to use it. Glad you enjoyed.

Ohmmmm
Nice meditation piece! I'll try a full lotus after I finish my coffee :) Beautiful sounds and good "bend editing"

Thanks.
Yeah the pitch bends really made a huge difference to this, even if they were a test of patience. My patience passed ;-)

I invariably
find oriental music meditational as well as atmospheric.... it paints lovely mental pictures.....and this piece does all of that...... the incorporation of the waves is nice too, regards M

I love that oriental sound too.
You'd never guess, would you? :D For some reason this just cried out to have the sounds of nature in the background and of the sound effects I have the waves just fit best. I'm glad it works for you too and thanks for the comment.

The Song of the Lost
It is so orientalist it can be, and that means harmony, very well done, peace.

Harmony is something they do well.
Something to do with the lack of dissonance in pentatonic scales maybe... Anyway thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!

Liked it from note 1.
Also, a very good idea re Jam Packs. Why didn't I think of that? Back to the music - very spare arrangement, which is entirely appropriate. Lovely.

eBay is mighty!
Lots of optimists are putting Jam packs up on eBay at rather inflated prices, but if you're persistent (as I am when I really want something) and keep searching regularly you can eventually find them going cheap. Bid in the last eight seconds or so and nobody can respond. My Jam Pack World Music was still shrink wrapped and has been fun to play with ever since it arrived. I'm pleased you enjoyed the first results.

Pitch bends
Fiddly things to programme! However, this is really nice. Very authentic sounding if I may be so bold. I'm not so sure about the waves. I think maybe you could reduce the volume ever so slightly? Or have them slowly panning perhaps? Minor nit pick however. Very relaxing and accomplished piece I would say.

I agree with you about the World Jampack btw. It is the best of them all and I wish they'd extend it. My favourite flute therein is the Native American one!

Thanks.
I have only tried the native American flute briefly but it did sound good. I love the Shakuhachi and the Xao flute too. I'm happy you enjoyed the music here and thanks for taking the time to comment.

Song of the Lost
Nice ambient piece. I bought all the jampacks on Ebay, and saved lots of $$ - the only way to go, if, like you say, you're careful. Good use of instruments - all sounds authentic to me. Very relaxing!

Mood...
This song puts me a very peaceful space and I am grateful for that. The choice of instruments immediately sets up a quiet and meditative atmosphere and you don't stray from that space with unnecessary embellishment. I really like the quiet koto and those wave-like rolls underneath it all. Sort of a musical haiku in its entire context. Very pleasant, very restrained, very beautiful, very peaceful.

Thanks!
I was trying hard to make the music appropriate to the instruments. I love the sound of woodwinds generally and will be exploring some more simple sounds with the Jam Pack World Music and also building them into some more complex pieces. I am glad you enjoyed this one, thanks for taking time to listen and comment.

Nicely put together.

Thank you!
The thing is, that particular Jam Pack is likely to give anyone tinkering with it about a million ideas in the first week. It's been great fun to toy around with it and this track is just the one I managed to finish; I have about four more in progress, all started on the first day I installed it and played with it.

Yeah I know, I should finish one before starting the next, hey what can I say? Too many ideas, not enough time lol!

I have the world
jam pack but it's jammed in the drive of a MacMini I own... I don't think I have it installed because of that! So I don't know much about the world sounds on the DVD.

This is fun and cool! I enjoyed it actually. Made me hungry for sushi!

Nicely done!

Dig that thing out!
An excellent DVD packed with useful software instruments, just tinkering with them on a midi keyboard will give you a million ideas. I'd find a friendly techie somewhere to get that drive opened (and maybe replaced) so you can install the World Music. With your abilities something good will come out, I'm sure.

Thanks for listening to this and taking time to comment. I'm glad you enjoyed this, sorry about triggering cravings lol!

Whenever I post a track it is unlikely to be much like the last one I posted. That's just me, can't do it any other way. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for letting me know that.

nice
I really think the Shakuhachi is one of the most beautiful sounding instruments. this does sound pretty idiomatic for the instrumentation, guess it's the scale and the pitch bends. very nice indeed! damn I feel relaxed now. great post

Thanks!
It's sometimes a lot of trouble and it takes much much longer to program a track with all those pitch bends, but it helps to make things a great deal more expressive. One day I hope to learn to play an instrument, then this sort of thing will be a lot easier lol! I do recommend that Jam Pack World Music for sure.

Thanks for stopping by to listen and comment.

Very enjoyable . I'M on my way to Japan next month. I'm planning to find the guy with the basket on his head. joking aside you have captured some of the ambience you feel when visiting some of the shrines. May I gently suggest the "wave" sound was almost unnecessary.

Those vast waters can be intimidating, and this is what you would want playing in your heart and mind as you brave the waves. Very soothing, and restful. Thanks for the post. T

The Song of the Lost
I disengaged my brain and immediately started thinking about Shintaro walking along a dusty road with his straw hat way down over his eyes, so you must have got the mood just right. Fine use of the Jam Pack instruments for sure. Much enjoyed. Thanks, Peter.

Fabulous!
I love this one - you have clearly put A LOT of work into the bends and slides and the result is like a live performance. The Jam Pack World Music is one of my favourite in their whole series since the quality is good and the inspiration is something that takes us out of our normal sphere of attention. Appreciate the dload!

Really great
You have created a very peaceful and relaxing piece with your new "toys". Well done, your hard work paid off!

My only nit is genre, since I hear a very clear melody in this, whereas ambient in its purest form is not. The backdrop here of course is ambient, but as a song I would try to find another genre. On the other hand, of course this doesn't matter as long as the tune finds its listeners. May they be many :-)

Thanks for the dl and take care,
Henke

Great imagery here with the ambient sounds. Your command of the pitch modulation for the string and wind instrument is perfect. Enjoyed it very much :)

Lost
A scale that always gets me. Beautiful work. The waves seem fine. On the other hand, forest sounds at night might be even better. I dunno. Doesn't matter really because the music makes it. Enjoyed.
