Doxey Fields

Description
A jaunty memory down Greensome Lane. I got in references to our neighbours, the Browns, the large Scalextric track that David and I assembled on the drive, the cows nearby, and the fact that Staffordians often say "Ah", when they mean, "Yes." Despite the sinister lyrics, it was a rather nice place to live.

Lyrics
Doxey Fields

Let me take you down to Doxey Fields
Looks like Lego, but it's very real

Do you want to go?

Doxey Fields -

Where the road is black, like a Scalextric track
Where the cows bow down, and the grass is brown

Let's all buy a house in Doxey Fields
Let's see how a life of luxury feels

Doxey Fields - so close to Stafford, you can taste it

Doxey Fields - thirteen seconds from the M6 Motorway

Doxey Fields - where your wildest dreams will haunt you forever

You cannot escape from Doxey Fields
There's no escape

Doxey Fields
The Beatles, Cliff Richard and The Diamonds get together to record a song? Lively tune. Varied arrangement - I like the different instruments you use. Good one, Graeme!

Yes, they did.
In my head, that is. I was thinking briefly about a Strawberry Fields pastiche, but that's been done, so went for something else. Thank you for getting up horribly early and checking out MacJams.

Haha!
"So close to Stafford, you can taste it" I'd like to know what Stafford tastes like. :-)

This is Reggae as the Bonzos would have done it. I don't think they ever did a Reggae number; I might be wrong, but they'd have done it like this. Anyway, I really like it! The Uke is perfect and the bass skanks! Good stuff.

"So close to Stafford, you can taste it" Hahaha! What a great line.

Like a grinding wheel.
...so, all you have to do is go in your shed/garage/workshop, and lick your bench grinder. Don't turn it on. Or do, it's up to you. The Universal Grinding Wheel Company was on the cusp of Doxey as it led into the steaming metrollops of Stafford, and stank periodically. It was a wonderful playground for kids with a deathwish. I think it is behind the more foreboding aspects of this ditty. I'm pleased you liked it, and even more pleased with the Bonzos reference.

Yep
Very English track feeling track Graham. Don't all us ex-pats have these kind of memories? Great playing. Bass and perc groove is excellently laid back. Neat stuff!

Lucky Bags
weren't really very lucky - they just had stale sweets and a crappy toy in them. Also, I collected Winston Churchill bubble gum cards. Winston Churchill! But I lived on a nice, friendly housing estate. These are the days of our lives. I'm happy you could identify with this, Andrew.

Psychedereggaelicious!
Nice and smooth, sliding between the Reggae pulse beneath and the nice, dreamy lyrics above. The uke gives it a quirky feel - kind of out of place, but just right.

Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

In lieu of a mandolin
That's what the uke is, plus I like to use it, as it's a great little instrument. Also, Doxey was much like Hawaii in many ways, usually after you'd licked a grinding wheel or two. Glad you enjoyed the song, Joseph.

Funny old world
The things you take for normal when you're a kid turn out to be quite bizarre, sometimes. The Winston Churchill cards struck me as a bit odd, even as a kid, but they were half the price of football or Batman cards, because the gum was stale. We didn't care, as it left more money for frozen sugar water pyramids or the four - a - penny BlackJacks. You can see how hard it was to squeeze stuff into this tune! Happy you liked it, Alec.

I don't think any of us can escape from the formative years where we grew up, Graham, unless your memory is just shite, like mine is. Infectious groove and quality lyrics. I don't even know where Stafford is... Your whimsical references to the joys of Doxey brought a smile to my face. Thanks, Peter.

I'm full of whimsy
Or maybe it's just the sprouts. Stafford is in the Midlands, north of Birmingham, and the most famous Staffordian is probably Jonny Ive, who designed all of Apple's good stuff. Then it's me, 'cause I wrote Sweeny Toddler for a couple of years, and then there are non - entities like Sheridan and the Fishing Guy who wrote "I like Fishing." What was his name? Oh, yeah - Isaac Newton. Any road, I'm glad you found it fun, Peter. I'd like to do more like this.

Ah, conveniently located, then. This is reggae? I have probably stereotyped the genre, and what do I know? I don't like reggae, but I like this song. The lyrics are something to be proud of, and what I really like about them is that they're delivered with a straight face. "... where your wildest dreams will haunt you forever" hahahaha. Yes (or "ah," as the case may be).

Another inspired composition from you. Much enjoyed, both the music and the humor.

Fantastic!
This has an effortless 'Nonesuch'-era Andy Partridge vibe. You've got a perfect balance of focused performance and easy humor (that bridge! those background 'girl' singers!). It's funny, but also so much more....
Very listenable music, indeed!

Love,

MoM

I took it to the bridge
I've been consciously reining in the zaniness lately, trying to use more conventional song patterns. On the other hand I have most of the XTC and Zappa albums imprinted in the brain. Glad you liked it, MoM.

XTC again?
Great intro and sound. Fantastic arrangement, so full of lots of things to like. The little voices, the high harmonies, the bass and what sounds like a banjo loop.

I love the feeling on this. Happy yet a little unsettling for some reason.

In fact I've played this this 3 times now and I'm liking it more on each listen.

Kudos Mr E :-)

Cheers

Dick

Happy, yet unsettling
That about sums it up. I'm not sure why I put in the less idyllic elements. Probably to make it less rose - tinted spectacular. The "banjo" is my trusty uke, which can be very loud when it wants to be. 3 times in a row? You'll be wanting to move there next! Thanks very much for listening, Dick.

The Old Days
were generally not as brilliant as we remember them. I left out the divorces, the fights and the loss of seventeen legs in a bizarre millipede - related incident. I'm very happy to have people listen, and even happier when they take time to comment, so thanks, Mr Ex. (They call me that at school.)

Nice capture...
...of your past life. Pieces like this are nostalgic and reveal so much about the lives of those who lived in the places described. The tinkly banjo (?) is the perfectly peaceful little instrument to accompany this track, and the vocal harmonies provide such an appropriate backup for the lyrics. (I could not, though, actually understand any of the lyrics were it not for your post of them. I wonder if I am the only one who has a problem hearing these words.)
Oh, and the little graphic is cool, too. I enjoyed the little trip you provided here.

Obscure voice for obscure references
I've since redone this with quieter uke and clearer vocals - I posted before I used my patent Honda mastering system to check the mix. I'm always in a rush to get the songs out there. I will endeavour to go for a drive before I post the next song! Many thanks for stopping by and commenting. It's much appreciated.

This is,
for me, a sweet and nostalgic lyric. What you did with it is impressive. It is jaunty and upbeat like reggae usually is but it has a late 60's British pop sound, too. Anyway, kudos on making a very unique and one of a kind, recording. Thanks.
