Description
after dealing with a recurring herniated disk for the past moth, a overheated upstairs recording room and working around bugs in logic x, i finally managed to get a song done.

Lyrics
Say No More

i could hold an hour glass
reverse the sands of time
i could be a frequency
like the sound of your voice
could be a shot in the dark
heard but never seen

and you say no more
you're dreaming your life away
and you say no more
you're wasting your days away

i know you dragged me down
to your solid ground
i know my mind is a cloud
we're better off that way
talk about here and now
i thought about yesterday

and you say no more
you're dreaming your life away
and you say no more
you're wasting your days away

find it hard to breathe
the dragon burns your lungs
the fire grows on and on and on

i would be a brutal wind
disturbing the angry sun
you will never see it that way
it's either black or gray
could have been a shot in the dark
heard but never stays

and you say no more
you're dreaming your life away
and you say no more
you're wasting your days away
and you say no more
you're dreaming your life away
and you say no more

the guitar lead..... a nasty dry fuzz was in order. this is pretty easy song really, just broke the parts down to there minimum and built it back up through the various tracks

Strong return. Cool chorus. Nice lead guitar work. There's a great clarity to both this recording and mix. Your production and mixes are always impressive. But you seemed to have raised your game even more on this. I'm wondering if you've learned some new tricks or maybe taking advantage of some new features or plugs in Logic X.

nothing much different in the mixing department. although, this was finished a week ago and i would add some extra tweaking each evening. it's easy to not catch something right away. stepping back from a recording for a few days helps

Good song with lots of interesting sounds used in the arrangement. Flows along very well. I like the organ especially. Killer guitar tone on the solo. I always enjoy your music, Vic! I hope the disk is improving - that sounds painful...
Vic Holman said 1382 days ago (August 11th, 2013)
thanks philip
the damaged disc is in the neck. i've had this before but worse... the big problem it affects the right arm & shoulder, dull & sharp pains plus numbness. kinda hard to play guitar when that happens

Awesome work Vic. Took me a week or two to get used to Logic Pro X, once they upgraded it it wasn't crashing as much. I digress... Quality all the way!

logic x is great. did take time to figure where they moved stuff. i didn't get any crashing. but there where issues recording audio (vocal) there might be a bussing issue that was creating a crossover. i had a vocal track picking up a delay effect on a different guitar track. when i turned off the delay it stopped.

I sympathize with
you about the back problem. (Been there, recently.) It's admirable that you overcame all the crap to make such a vibrant piece. That is one catchy, powerful chorus. You always have a dynamic sound. Thanks.

yeah there are those things that come on when you get older. the chorus is usually the thing that people remember most, so that is where the big event should come into play

Among the other comments (above)...
...is the structure of this number which I find very interesting and most-engaging. I love the way you keep coming back to the "verse" music/harmony in sort of a backdoor manner, leading there from your chorus. ... That running bass line in the chorus reminds me a bit of "Mystery Trip" (for just a moment). It is just as engaging! The lyrics strike me as an indictment. I don't know if you meant them that way since they are a bit obscure (at least to me). If this is what you meant by them, then I think they are fed/encouraged by the chord structure that supports them. If not, then I am left at a bit of a loss. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the song, especially its structure.

the lyrics, true i usually am a bit obscure in the meaning of them. leaves alot to the imagination of how someone else might perceive them. basically this is , in the verse someone as a daydreamer. in the chorus we have the second party stating that the day dream is just wasting his or her time :-)

... wafting in and out of the arrangement feathers the mix very nicely, Vic and creates a unique atmosphere for your song. Very cool. ;)

I always like listening to your songs. Your vocals and guitar work are always impeccable and entirely your own.

I'm not sure that I like the drums in this one. What did you use for it? The bass drum is not terribly deep and the snare is kinda diffuse. At 2:50 (and other places) what is that relentlessly ticking/pounding tom? It's too light for a bass drum, but not quite a regular tom either. Ok, you get the message: I would have used different drums.

drums
thanks victor for your feedback, i started rethinking about the drums several days after i posted

the tom was a electronic tom, thinking of dumping that, plus get rid of the gate reverb on the drums in the chorus as well

Heat blisters
Regarding the aches and pains as one ages, I can tell you from experience it won't get any easier.

The other problem can be solved by either turning down the heat (has winter already come to Spokane?) .. or turning on the air conditioner : )

You turn up the (dragon) heat in this song with that blistering lead!

The nuances of Logic are lost on me (because I have never advanced beyond Garageband). Maybe that's why my songs always sound like there is an air conditioner humming in the background?

"My mind is a cloud." Now there's a lyric I can relate to!

Killer Chorus
That climbing step into the chorus is just a showstopper. Funny how some specific thing like that can so light me up, but it absolutely does. The whole song resonates like a precariously-balanced bell, echoing touches of my long-lost yoot years with oversized headphones filled with ELO's Out Of The Blue cranked up high enough to make my feet bleed.

It's been a while since I've been here; your singing sounds relaxed and strong, a perfect fit to the lyrics that turn wonderful little whirls over the rich arrangement. And that arrangement, specifically - I love how you create such textured hues of sound with quite spare, elegant arrangements. With you, less always creates more. And what a trip it is.
