The King Of No Man v2.0 [2min 30sec w/intro - WIP]

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Further development and enhancements. I've added an intro, to build up to the main theme. Totally different key... I think I modulated OK. There are some gaping holes in the second section... need to iron them out. Gimme your thoughts. A long way to go...

Thanks,
Alimar

sounding great so far..
it's been such a long while, Al. great to hear how your composing has evolved..a lot of nice subtleties & a bit more relaxed from what i remember. as for my input–i always enjoy some unexpected twists & turns (something I know you're good at). will try to listen & weigh-in on future versions. hope you're well!

Hey, _n!
How's the family? Good to hear from you. Say hi to the family. I appreciate your dropping by to listen and comment.

You know, it'll be ten years in January for MJ! You and the MissusChaos gotta stop by and post some more music in celebration.

You're insane.
Truly. In the way Mozart was. I cannot believe the levels of complexity and depth and REALISM you achieve. I'm gonna listen to this a couple of times just to enjoy it and then I'm gonna really try hard to nitpick. I wonder if I'll find anything.

OK a couple of things.
(I'm being SUPER SUPER PICKY here...) at 0:09 some glockenspiel comes in, continuing through about 0:27. I think they are too big. They cut so well, they can sit way back in the mix and still shower you with sound. I think they could be cut in half at least. The dynamic swell at 1:30 - holy shit. Just amazing. OK, one other thing, in the sections where the tympani is quickly repeating notes; it sounds, well, too "perfect". Perhaps softening the quantization just a tad, or having a little variation in velocities to humanize it more; getting it to the amazing levels of human you have in the strings and winds. You understand here that I'm just picking on it hard because you wanted feedback and I didn't want to just gush all over it - because in all it is well and truly astonishing. I bow humbly to and am deeply envious of your arranging skill and ability to produce these sounds. What are you using for those beautiful legato strings? I want it. Bad.

I appreciate...
...all of the attention you've spent listening and commenting! I am grateful you decided to critique a bit. I do my composing with headphones, and the sibilance tends to be buried. Eventually I listen on several systems to get a believable balance. Those pesky bells seem so low in my Bose headphones, but tend to cut through loudly in open air speakers. I'll fix that soon! Those timps are pesky to tweak... Good call on un-quantizing and velocity tweaks.

The sounds are East/West and of all their simple legato strings, I love the lazy feeling attack they have at times. They have a real good legato articulation ability. I use NOTION to score... It is so easy to use... On an iPad and computer.

I appreciate your comments muchly. Thanks again for all of your wonderful comments AND especially for your taking the time to critique.

Your music is wonderful!

Crotales
The chimes in the first part are Crotales. They always seem too loud. I think I'll change them to Celeste as in the second section to see how they sound. Thanks again!

Thanks man...
It was tough to "critique", I had to really be fastidious to find any actual problems. :)

Llarion is right on
An excellent critique.
I like the crotales, though, and think the slightly disharmonic tone they have is a good counterbalance to the sweetness of the music in the beginning. My two cents.

Then it's settled...
Lower the crotales volume... Mess with the timps (tweaking with quantization and velocities makes me cringe... I always 'over-think' and get into trouble). Thanks for your 2 cents. All the pennies are welcome.

No critique
is coming to mind. Rather that this is already one of my favorites of yours. Very well balanced and coherent and pure enjoyment. Listened on headphones, I might add ;-) A bit longer might be nice of course, even if there is always the repeat/replay button...

Thanks and take care,
Henke

The King Of No Man
I'm not really in any position to critique, and in reality, I don't feel the need to to. The overall mood of the piece is positive and uplifting. It provides much to enjoy, even at this stage. Thanks, Peter.

Really fine
I really like your string sounds in the underscore. Not so much when they are playing the melody at the louder volume. But I'm sure you don't have a real orchestra at your beck and call. I hope you are continuing with this. Although I tend to write the 2 to 3 minute piece, this calls for much more time to appreciate fully.

Hard to critique ( I'm just a simple bluesman, lol)
I'm just in awe of your writing (do you write the notes down or slownly build it by ear?
Very visual stuff
enjoyed it!

Scored
I write the music into a scoring program as I think it. Each instrument is placed in the Grand Staff from woodwinds down to strings, in hopes that someone might want to perform my comps someday.

Thanks for listening and sharing your thoughts.

As in that beautiful
opening I really do love the way you've manipulated the volumes of the instruments as a conductor would. From hearing the first sample piece of this that you posted earlier, you certainly have fulfilled all we could have expected. The sweeps of strings and the tinkles make this magical.....and the whole sound is like a listening 'experience'; so pleased I didn't miss this one Al, regards M

Still in awe.
I keep coming back and listening, and each time, I hear new nuances I missed the previous time. I'm knocked out by this. Still, and again. the gentle strings are my favorite part, the accurate legato relaxed tone. I so want this. I wish I could afford them. I have a great piano now, guess I'll save up for these. Is it the "Hollywood" collection or which library?
