Song of the Morning (with Franciscus Henri)

Description
The song was written in the 70s by Franciscus Henri (words) and me (music). Franciscus recorded it on his album Gabrielle's Mother's Highway, on which I played guitar. It's a song I've always had a soft spot for, and I have finally got around to recording a version of it. Franc kindly offered to sing a harmony vocal, which adds, I think, massively to the overall performance.

Lyrics
Song of the Morning
Words and Music Franciscus Henri & Philip Gardner (Orient Pacific Music)

A song of the morning I've heard sung
Like the heat of the day not yet begun
To shine friend of mine take the time
Life can lend you

A song of the morning touched by day
Like a young man with eyes and yet blind
With new lies to see the time take the time
Life can lend him

Life sends you its own
But takes you alone
It's alone that you die
And the child that was you now is your child
And the little you know now is greater.

Like a seed sown at noon full of life
Yet in living finds dying not yet begun
To die friend of mine take the time
Life can lend you

I personally
think anything with you on guitar will simply be great. This is no exception.

The guitar is sweet and cool. What a cool song! Enjoyed. Nicely done!

Song of the Morning
Sweet song. Love the vocal and harmonies. Classic 60s folk sound. The vocal sound and reverb accent that classic vibe. Great guitar sound.

Thanks
Thanks for that, Andrew. I was happy with the way the vocals came together - having Franc onboard sure helps with that! Cheers. Philip.

I didn't realise
that you two have a longer connection. Lovely song, and very nicely performed and produced.
Sorry I've missed so much lately - have a couple of big musical projects at the moment, and am very time-poor. To top it off we're off to Broken Hill to do some walking - and trying to sell a house! Life used to be so easy when I was working :)
I digress!
Lovely tune Franc and Philip - when's the tour?
Cheers from up north.

The connection
We met when we started teaching together at Werribee High School - and that was a while ago. Worked together in folk joints. Thanks for the comments on the song. Sounds like you're a busy boy at the moment! THe tour? Not sure about that, although we did work at the Port Fairy Folk Festival earlier this year, which was a lot of fun!

I wanted to beat Andrew too. :) What a lovely song, such an expressive vocal treatment (Franc's voice just oozes life experience), and the guitars are a delight, as always. Your lead tone is heavenly.

Friends
I have to admit there was a bit of a gap as Franciscus went into music full time and I got busy with school teaching, but it's great to get back into making music together!

This was great fun to do Phil. Fantastic to revisit the song, it brought back memories of the Melbourne Armstrong studios..where everyone was Fab and the walls were orange.

This has come up very nicely, Philip. The harmonies with Franc are a real highlight. Nice analogue folk vibe. Sympathetic arrangement, too. A fine post. Talk soon. Regards, Peter.

Folk vibe
The original had Brian Cadd playing piano - I was never going to get near that, so it had to be a bit different! Thanks for the comments! See you soon.

Always good to hear from you, Stan - your comments are much appreciated! I was happy with the lead tone- not the Gibson this time, but a MIM stratocaster with Lollar pickups put in (much warmer than the ones that came with the guitar).

Song of the Morning
I definitely feel the 70's Peter, Paul and Mary - Simon and Garfunkel - Bread vibe on this very nice tune. Phil your playing is sweet and smooth (nice solo too), and the vocal tracks are laid back and relaxed. Good job, gentlemen -

Song of the Morning
written in the 70s and you're still in contact to do an upgraded version? that's some endurance. i can hear why this is an old favorite, there's something about the way the song flows. corny, but "cozy" comes to mind, and nothing at all bad about comfort.

VEry pretty song
and so nicely produced with simple elements (guitar/bass)...The electric lead in the bridge is so sweet and rich — just enough to let the listener "rest" for a moment.

(nit: The vocal pitch isn't always right on the money esp. on higher notes and in combo with the second voice.)

I think your vocal couldn't be more perfect for this song: everything from the timbre to the delivery is honest and earnest (in the best possible way). Solid song, solidly made.

Apparently, there is no doubt

Glad you enjoyed it, Richard. RE the hits and plays, I don't really pay much attention to those after the first few days - there's something strange going on. One of my songs has 1870 hits and 158 plays. What could that possibly mean? The fans I think is real, but the rest I don't think can be. Anyway, thanks for listening and taking the time to comment - I really appreciate it!
