Lyrics
When I think of Helen
words and music Franciscus Henri (Albert Music)
When I think of Helen
I think of pretty postcard ladies
Renoir shady parasols and I feel old
Before my time.
Picture framed on mantle piece and
Out of time and out of place
Forgotten faces memories that come to me
Before my time.

Forgotten names on photographs
Un-seeing smiles that rest a while, that rest in peace
Though not with me.

Gilt edged in a guilty thought thrown away
Resold and bought
Dog-eared in a strangers hand
Strangers with forgotten friends
They stand, alone
In Helens home

When I think of Helen
I think of shy and faded dresses
Chopin, piano lessons and I feel old
And of time
Dickens' books in leather binders, polished wood,
Where letters find her,
The places where I could not go
And I feel old and
Out of rhyme
Rhymings from another age
E.E.Cummins, William Blake
That rest in peace
Though not with me.

Gilt edged in a guilty thought thrown away
Resold and bought
Dog-eared in a strangers hand
Strangers with forgotten friends
They stand alone
In Helens home

When I think of Helen
I think of pretty postcard ladies
Renoir shady parasols and I feel old
Before my time.

When I think of Helen
Wonderfully atmospheric song, Franc. The lyrics are first class and the arrangement you put together works beautifully. Your vocal work has lovely light and shade, too. Fine post. Thanks, Peter.

Helen
Evocative lyrics - the artist's eye at work as you create pictures. I like the way the orchestration builds up from repeated motifs, with the steady guitar there to provide a focus. Warm vocal. Beautiful work, Franc!

sorry about the lack of DL
I 'm still tied to my publisher and they don,t like DL
I must admit this is one of my most heartfelt songs.
I dream do singing this one day with a chamber orchestra....and what's wrong with dreaming?

Wen I Think of Helen
I REALLY like your song - very well written, tender, fantastic lyrics and melody and a wonderful arrangement. From my personal perspective (I'm your age), one lyric seemed out of place "and I feel old". I think you can get around this as the other age qualifying lyrics (i.e out of time, forgotten faces, before my time, etc.) convey this already. BUT, even if you left the lyrics as is, it's till a wonderful song. GREAT song writing!

thanks Martin
to be honest the song was written when I was a lot younger. I met Helen when working as set designer with a theatre company, In her house she had framed photos of what I thought were her relatives but were in fact photos purchased in second hand book shops. As a child her father would read her from Charles Dickens and Helen seemed to "out of time and out of place" She is now a successful author.
The song is a tribute to her and perhaps a comment on me at a time when I was being very Seventees

Renoir...
as soon as I opened this track up and found "Two Girls at the Piano", I knew I would love this number. I have a copy framed in my living room, a reminder of my own two girls when they were younger. Such a sweet painting.

Oh, you have written and performed a very rich and lament-filled portrait of one's life and you sustain the feeling for the full duration of your song with such poignancy in your voice and in the gentle instrumentation you;ve chosen. This is a song I will listen to many times. . . (At 1:20 that wonderful 1/2 step dropping of the vocal line is marvelous!) ... Congratulations on creating such a lasting work of art. A pure pleasure to hear this wonderful music.

A
gentle song and prose that firmly holds one's attention from first note to last. Lovely.

You write significant and soulful songs.
Something I hope I can do one day. What's worse, I identify. I can taste the emotions. Very naked writing. I always admire that in an artist and it is so rare today. Thank you!
